Allergist prescribed this after doing a allergen testing. I've had a itching condition for almost two years on various areas. Arms, then legs, neck/shoulder area. Itching was very intense. I had plug biopsies done to rule out diseases. Also had many blood lab tests run, showed no diseases. WOW to think 3 different dermatologists never tried the cyproheptadine oral before now. It took an allergist to prescribe it.

My 4yr daughter has been suffering with headaches and her neurologist prescribed this med to help prevent her headaches and so far she has not had one since she started the med. Hopefully it will continue to work.

I am currently on this medicine and am very pleased with it. Before using it, I would have 2-3 EXTREMELY SEVERE migraines a week. Since being put on this medicine, I have reduced those numbers to around 1-2 every couple months or so. Although it has caused weight gain, it hasn't caused extreme weight gain. i've gained around 20 pounds. But, i would rather have gained 20 pounds than have migraines every day. I do recommend this medication to all people who suffer migraines =)

My 92 year old mother stopped eating after a fall and got to 88 pounds. She was prescribed this medication and has regained the 12 pounds she lost She has a better appetite than ever and now enjoys eating. Sleeps great at night for an added bonus. No side effects. This medication saves her life.

My son has been dealing with migraines for a few years and his occurrences seem to correspond with hormone surges (e.g.: when he is getting ready to have a growth spurt). When he was around 10 years old, the doctor prescribed cyproheptadine. At the time he was having around three migraine episodes a week in the form of sleeplessness, nausea or headache, as children can have migraine symptoms that are not headache only. According to his doctor, the goal was to get migraine free for 30 days then to quit taking the cyproheptadine. Apparently, a significant number of children at this age are able to discontinue the med once you break the migraine cycle and will not relapse. It took 90 days on the medication from start to finish and his migraines subsided until a few years later around age 12-13. We decided to research our options before taking the new medications recommended by the neurologist since we want to be cautious about changing a child's brain chemistry with meds. We found studies showing 100mg of Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and 100mg of Niacin (Vitamin B3) and a study taking 200mg of CoQ10 were all very effective in handling migraines and began him on these instead. After 30 days, the number of migraines significantly decreased to approximately 1 a month and most of the time the headaches can be treated with Excedrin versus something like Imitrex. We also eliminated Nitrites (preservatives), chocolate and caffeine from his diet. It has been months now since he has taken any form of migraine medication and we are backing him off the 100mg B Vitamins and CoQ10. Doing well so far, now age 14. If the migraines return, we will begin 100mg of the B vitamins and 200mg of CoQ10 again or perhaps start with a lower dose at 50mg B vit and 100mg COQ10. Hope this info can help someone else struggling with migraines.Read More Read Less

My son takes this medication for severe (almost daily) migraine headaches. It has nearly eliminated them, and when he does have them (rarely) the intensity of the headache is severely decreased. He has had no noticible side effects.

I see that there have been parents questioning the use of this for their kids. I can say that my son has been using Cyproheptadine for 6 years for Migraines and he went from daily migraines to a handfull over the course of the year. No abnormal weight gain over the years. Prayers answered with this medication.

my son has been on this medication for a few days and has been very aggressive one minute and then crying hysterically the next. It did stop the hives, but the reactions from the meds are much worse than what its treating.

I had a bad case of migraines, and I was underweight because I did not want to eat because of all the migraines I was having. I start taking this medication and I gained 35Lbs in three months and the migrains stopped. I was not sleepy and I was able to work without crying about my head. I have so much energy and I am happy that someone told me about this medication.

My son was prescribed this med when he was 9. He is now 10. It definately helps to increase appetite but he has to take med in the early evening or he will be too sleepy for school in the morning. However, on Saturdays it does help him to catch up on much needed sleep.
