I have used Boniva for three months and so far so good. I tried Actanol and Fosamex with side effects of joint and chest pains. I hope this continues to work for me.

My Dr. prescribed Boniva as my bone density test showed it have osteopenia. Took one dose and several weeks later at work I developed sudden diarrhea. I also became dizzy and my entire upper body became flushed - even the whites of my eyes were bloodshot. Also my hands became numb and tingly. It took several days to recover. Dr. felt it was a reaction to the meds and has recommended other osteoporosis drugs but after reading people's reactions to these drugs, I think I'm just going to take my chances and start taking calcium, D3 and exercising. I'm a healthy person and this was a scary reaction - I don't want an even worse one that I've read some people have.Read More Read Less

Taking Boniva caused a fractured femur bone which has been painful and difficult to heal. I do not recommend anyone to take this drug.

Jan 1 2014. Took my first dose. February 1 experienced hives and a severe "hotspot" on my stomach just under my belly button. It burns and itches without let up: also a large area on the inside of my left wrist; dr gave me a shot of cortisone but it did not help. March 25 I developed large hives on my buttock. Stopped taking boneva After second dose. I also have hot flashes (I am 71 yrs old) which I did not have before. Think I will take my chances with exercise and calcium.

Since I started taking this medication I have not lost any more inches and I get a better reading on my bone density tests. I have a problem in paying for this medication and most of the health plans are still charging a higher price for both Boniva and the generic.

Took one pill. My arthritis in my one finger is double the size with pain & swelling I never had...this joint was the only one in my body that has arthritis. I have been on a heating pad for one week with muscle pain in ribs & spine. I am a 56 year old that has always been pain free. I am stopping this drug immediately and starting to eat better, take my calcium supplements regularly with exercise and will repeat bone density in 2 years..to see results. These side effects are totally unexceptable!!!!!Read More Read Less

I took first dose, no issues. Second dose caused swelling of my face. Left side looks like I was punched below my eye. Effecting my vision too. Three days later, I am still having limited facial movement on lift side. Still swollen under eye. Hoping this resolves. Will not take another dose.

I have only taken one dose of this medicationa and I will never take it again. The day after taking this I was afflicted with extereme joint pain and stiffening. I couldnt move for a day. Every bone and joint in my body hurt. It was excrutiating. The pain leveled off after a few days but was still a considerable amount of pain. It took about 5 days for the pain to completely subside.

After taking only one tablet, I have experienced serious jaw and joint pain. Only three days ago I took the first one and it will be the last one. The pain throughout my body feels like someone has beaten me with a rubber hose.

I only took one dose if generic Boniva. Had extreme joint pain the next day. It lasted for 3 days. I was better for one and then symptoms came back even worse and lasted another 3 - 4 days. Walgreens even called to ask if I had any questions and how was I doing 3 days later. It made me think something's up - they never call about a prescription!!! It's been over 3 months since I took that one and only dose and I'm STILL feeling the side effects about every week and a half. They last 24 - 36 hours. When will this drug ever be out of my system????Read More Read Less

Took my 1st 150 mg oral dose 3 weeks ago. Doctor prescribed generic Ibandronate Sodium. Experienced SEVERE bone pain all over, especially in my back. Pain comes for 2 days, hits hard and goes away. Three weeks later & the pain is back. Won't take anymore after reading reviews & talking to my doctor.

I have been amazed and disturbed by all the bad reviews of this and other osteoporosis drugs. I developed osteopenia (early bone loss symptoms) after years of oral predisone use and when my dr. recommended Fosamax 10 years ago I agreed to take the weekly medications as prescribed. My bone density improved dramatically after just one year and I never had ANY side effects. A few years ago I switched to Actonel monthly medications--still had no side effects. When my insurance company increased the price of Actonel I switched to monthly Boniva and no side effects with this medication either. I asked my dr. about all the bad reports of jaw necrosis and femur breaks and she said the studies where these side effects were noted were primarily done on older woman who had other medical issues and many had been on chemotherapy. She said if I was healthy and had no side effects after 20 years of use, then I shouldn't worry. I also take Citracal with Vitamin D, walk every day and am in good health and normal weight--a young 60 years of age! My dr. has even stopped taking DEX scans annually as my bone density has improved so much. My mother had osteoporosis with a dowager's hump at 70 and shrunk 2 inches in height--she never took hormone replacement therapy drugs which contributed to the bone loss. I also have taken bio-identical hormones in the form of Tri-est compounded estrogen and that is also a contributing factor to my good bone health now I beleive. SO DON'T BELIEVE ALL THE BAD REVEIWS OF OSTEOPOROSIS DRUGS-MOST OF THESE ARE BEING WRITTEN BY WOMEN WITH MANY OTHER HEALTH ISSUES AND/OR ARE SENSITIVE TO MOST MEDICATIONS IT SEEMS. I have been taking this drug for over 5 years and I must be one of the lucky ones because I have never had any problems and my bone density tests remain very stable.
