I have a hiatal hernia which lead to esophagitis. I seemed to have a remission for about a year when I started drinking aloe vera juice (look in this, it helps acid reflux) but I have a bit of a return of my acid symptoms so I'm back on this medicine which has worked pretty well in the past. Chest bloating, mild chest pain. A little tip to save money, get the cheaper pill form and a pill crushe...

After taking this medicine for a week, I started having constipation despite Miralax every night, high fiber diet + 8 glasses of water/day. Finally had to quit b/c it "paralyzed" my colon and I was unable to have a bm. It took 3 days of Milk of Magnesia and another week before I was able to go - then developed crampy diarrhea. I will NEVER use Carafate again!!!!

I have a hiatal hernia and GERD. My stomach pain was severe, so my doctor prescribed Carafate to take with my Nexium. I've been taking the medicine for a week and it has greatly reduced my reflux and stomach pain. I can actually sleep lying down now. Hopefully it will help my erosions in my stomach heal faster. I have not noticed any adverse side effects except for the dry mouth. That is more tolerated than the stomach pain by far.

Husband has hiatial hernia so Dr. prescribed to help with the pain and to help heal it when it flares up. Seems to help but takes a few days to work. Hard to take 1 hour before eating but can be taken 1 hour after also which is usually what he does. He takes in conjunction with an acid reducer which seems to help more.

After gastric bypass, developed ulcer in anastomosis, taking carafate for eight months, still not healing. What's that aftertaste flavor attributed to? It's like a menthol flavor.

although this medicine works well to stop the bleeding from gastric varices, it is a bit on the pricey side, medicare & some private prescription insurers won't pay for it.

This med for me is 4 times a day. Not bad really. But it seems to make my stomach more upset and crampy then without it. I was "blessed" with my ulcer in my esophagus & stomach by an antibiotic that was stuck in my esophagus horizontially for several hours one morning while I slept after taking the morning dose on an empty stomach with too little to drink. Won't do that again. So it does work but not sure how effective for me.

I am taking this medicine to help with the pain and healing of an ulcer in my esophagus. I was instructed to take this medicine 4 times a day for 2 weeks. It is sometimes difficult to time this medicine 1 hour before eating or 2 hours after eating, so I did not stick to the schedule of 4 times a day. But this medicine has worked for me, although I take it now as needed - whenever I feel pain. It seems to upset my stomach if I take it before bedtime.
