I have never been on any birth control other than using condoms and decided to get an iud, Skyla more towards ladies who haven't had a child. Did lots of research and it is a shame that you only find negative and scary stories online bc no one will take the time to write a good review. I am a woman who does not ever see side effects from any medication, everything always works as it states on ...

I went in to get skyla inserted today. Most painful experience EVER! It was like really bad cramps x1000. After inserting my doctor said I should be fine after 5 minutes. I wasn't. I was in so much pain I was shaking uncontrollably and almost fainted. The nurses said my body just "rejected" it. Needless to say my doctor had to remove it. Worst experience with birth control ever.

I just got Skyla inserted today. I have a unique experience in that, though the goal was to have it inserted during my period, my period ended two days before my appointment to have it inserted. I called the doctor to reschedule my appointment but they said it should be fine to come it. That plus asking for, and then being denied, a local anesthetic, my experience was VERY painful. I have never been pregnant and consider myself a "tough girl" having done many physically challenging events in my life. But this was by far the worse pain I have ever experienced. Now its been a few hours and with Tylenol I am just experiencing some painful cramping, nothing that a good conversation can't mask. We will see how the coming weeks go and I will try to post again on that outcome. At this point, if you have not had children, I am not sure I would recommend it. But then again, I did have a unique situation (what with not being on my period, as it is recommended to be) so it could be better if you are able to follow the protocol as recommended.Read More Read Less

Only reason why I have low satisfaction rating is because the insertion was extremely painful to me. I had it done yesterday morning and the pain was so extreme that I had to ask the practitioner to stop. It was by far the greatest amount of pain I've ever experienced in such area. I was instantly in tears and shaking. The doctor than gave me 2 extra strength ibuprofen and after 20 minutes she also gave me two whole syringes of lidocaine into my cervix. That actually made it barely bearable. I still chose to go thru with it since I was having constant issues with the Depo shot (I was bleeding heavily, daily for over 4 months straight). There was also extreme cramping after the insertion. I even had to call out of work. Today there is still some cramping, but I am able to walk around like a normal person again. Hopefully the IUD is in proper place and all the pain will be worthwhile, because I'm sure as heck not doing that again for a LONG time! No babies, no pregnancies, 27 years old, healthy, active, fit, small. Read More Read Less

So I just got my Skyla inserted about an hour ago and I just wanted to write about the insertion itself and my experience. I was nervous going there after reading horror story reviews, but I decided to go anyways. My doctor had me wait until I was on my period to get it inserted so it would go in easier. I took 1000mg of Tylenol extra strength and that's it. No numbing stuff or cervix softening meds. I was only there for 30 minutes total and about 3 of them were dedicated to the actual insertion. Im 19, never had kids, never had sex so I was expecting pain. My periods usually come with 1 or 2 days of cramps in my lower back but that's it. My doctor talked me through the whole thing and all in all it, my cramps from day 2 of my period were worse than this insertion. Now after, it just feels like my stomach is sore from doing an ab workout. It was so much better than I imagined it would be. I thought I'd be in screaming pain but it just felt like a period cramp. No biggie. We'll see how it goes from here, but I just wanted to let everyone know that the pain is different for everyone and don't let scary reviews scare you off, cause it might not feel painful to you in the slightest bit. It's an uncomfortable feeling getting it inserted for sure, but I didn't have any actual pain. :) Read More Read Less

my acne has become such an issue the trade off is not worth it. Nothing I do stops the acne. My doctor even put me on the pill, in addition to the skyla for the hormones and NOTHING helps. I hate it. The ease of not taking birth control everyday is not worth the acne and the mood changes.

I am jealous of you ladies who say getting the Skyla inserted wasn't painful for you! I had mine inserted 12 hours ago and I am STILL having extremely bad cramping and pain. My doctor gave me a prescription to soften my cervix, but even with the medicine it did not want to go in smoothly. My doctor actually had to squeeze my cervix to allow it to go in. Two big pops later and it was done, but man was it painful. And I have a pretty high pain tolerance. I had to stay at the office until my blood pressure came up, and they gave me some prescription strength ibuprofen but I still have some pain. Overall though, the 3 years of protection will be worth it.Read More Read Less

So I wanted to get the IUD because i just didn't want to deal with worrying about taking birth control every day andam terrified of getting pregnant. the insertion process was very painful but i survived my period has been out of whack for a while. it'll be on schedule for a few months, then disappear. my skin has become horrible again like a teenager. I've been sweating alot more and stronger than before. i seem to have gained weight. soo we'll see. it's been a year so far i'm sticking with it but i don't know what i'll decide to do later. I am 20 years old and have been on a bunch of different birth controls for a couple years now. The reason I chose Skyla was because I have vaginal dryness and obviously I need it for a birth control. I got the procedure done today and I am not going to lie to you guys...it hurt a lot. I have had horrible cramping all day and almost a light period that could last for days my doctor says. Very painful, uncomfortable procedure. Yes, it went very quick but it was not pleasant. Perhaps it is different for everyone? I also have a smaller Uterus and my doctor said that Skyra wouldn't really fit but we did it anyways. Maybe that is the reason why it hurt so bad. Hopefully this birth control will help with the dryness that was caused by other birth controls that I have used in the past. It will be nice to not have a period, buy birth control every month! Good luck to those who decide to get it and I hope it isn't that painful for you :)Read More Read Less

I have only had Skyla for about 2 weeks now. I was terrified of getting it placed as I had never had sex, hadn't even gotten a pap smear and had read terrible reviews online. The placement was honestly so easy for me - there were a few pinches here and there, and a little bit of pressure where I would get cramps (I don't call them cramps because it doesn't seem like the right word... it just felt like a tiny painful pressure). Anyway, afterward I didn't feel cramps at all. After a few hours I got some minor/medium cramping. The next day I was completely fine - I played in an all day volleyball tournament. I got it inserted on the second day of my period, my heaviest day. Usually my periods last around 5 days - after the skyla was placed, the actual period seemed to end. Ihl have now had light brown discharge for 2 weeks, needing just a pantyliner. I get cramps probably once or twice a day, but they literally last 2-4 minutes at a time, and range from mild to severe (mostly mild). I can't actually rate on effectiveness of it because I still have about a month until I will become sexually active (my wedding coming up, lol). Don't let all the reviews freak you out. I was panicked because I was so nervous - the worst thing for me while getting it placed was actually just my being so nervous!Read More Read Less

Did lots of research and it is a shame that you only find negative and scary stories online bc no one will take the time to write a good review. I am a woman who does not ever see side effects from any medication, everything always works as it states on the box, therefore so far I haven't had anything out of the normal with Skyla. I've had it for just over 2 weeks now. The insertion felt exactly like getting your annual pap smear, but my doctor gave me two pills to dilate me so that helped I'm sure. Perhaps I have a higher pain tolerance, not sure. Got home and had period cramps for 2 days and it was like it extended my period, which you have to be on your period when it is inserted. Since then at first it was more brown spotting, then currently it has lightened up. But my spotting only happens when I used the restroom and I have no need for a panty liner. Have yet to have sex since my bf is long distance, but it was very hard to find the strings, they are way up in there so idk the experience yet sexually. I have actually become more sexually aroused, larger breasts, and less shedding of my hair before the IUD. Have yet to see any other side effects since it has only been 2 weeks exactly. Pros definitely the fact that this will last three years and it is FREE!! I also take medication for seizures, Lamotrigine, and it has no effect with that medication. So far so good, I will be posting another comment in a month to come ladies. Hope this helped.Read More Read Less

I got skyla placed in Dec 2014. Getting it placed wasn't too bad, the worst part was when they numbed my cervix. The cramps after were pretty rough but only lasted about 5-6 hours. I had constant light bleeding for about 2 months, which is normal. Then the bleeding stopped and I had no bleeding, not even a period. However, one morning I woke up with terrible lower abdomen pain, and had to go to the ER. Turns out I had two ovarian cysts and one had burst (I had no history of cysts before the IUD) and I also had an ectopic (or tubal) pregnancy. I had to be admitted into the hospital and I ended up having to have laparoscopic surgery. Needless to say, Skyla turned out to not be the right choice for me. Read More Read Less

I am writing this (short) review, just to say: do NOT let the bad reviews scare you out of getting Skyla!! I read them all and expected the worst pain of my life and it was no where near that bad. Don't get me wrong, there was some pain. But the most for me was when my doctor numbed my cervix. It was a sharp pain but went away immediately and did not linger. MAKE SURE TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR IF THEY WILL GIVE YOU A LOCAL ANISTHETIC! (My doctor told me some doctors don't and THAT is where the bad experiences come from!) The rest was pressure and some slight cramping. Currently, I'm not feeling sharp cramps, just kind of that sore "bleh" feeling in my lower belly that tends to linger throughout my period. Though I still have to see how the one month adjustment period goes, the procedure was not so bad!! :)Read More Read Less

I just got skyla today. I was nervous but luckily it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The procedure did hurt but it was bearable & over before I knew it. Also, well worth it. If you are wondering what to expect just like I was than I will let you know. My doctor had me lie down & put my feet in the stirrups. Then she shined a light & put the spectrum in me. Next she measured my cervix which was the most painful but didn't last but 10 seconds. Lastly, she inserted the skyla & just like that it was over. Just two big bad cramps. I got really hot & light headed during the short pain but it didn't last. When she was done I sat right up & was on my way out. I had pretty bad cramping afterwards but take ibuprofen. Iv never had kids. My fiancé went with for moral support and drove me home, but if he wasn't there than I would have been fine. If you are scare like I was then don't be. As long as you have a good doctor that knows what they are doing than it will be fine. I'm now laying in bed cramping but very minimal and at the end of the day I'm happy that I ended up getting it. I had planned to get an IUD once the Affordable Care Act made them free. I freaked out when I saw the insertion device, but followed through with it. I actually wanted a mirror to watch what was going on. It hurt for about five minutes, and then I had period-like cramps for the next few days (I had already been on my period though). Since then I've had light periods, more like spotting really, my migraines went from 3 a week to 1 a month, and best of all I'm not pregnant! I plan on using this method for as long as I'm fertile.Read More Read Less

I have been on Skyla since Dec. 12 2014. So Just over a month. (NO KIDS). Getting it put in felt like really bad cramp with a lot of pressure. They insert the stick and measurer you first. (10seconds.) They then put the stick in again and put in skyla (10Sec). I was dizzy and felt sick for a few minutes. It passed. I had cramps for a day and a half. Then I felt great. I was on my period when I had it inserted. They say the cervix is softer and the process will be less painful. Over all it has been great. No major cravings. I gained weight on my BC Pill so I was concerned about that but my appetite has decrease since I've been on Skyla. (No major weight loss though) I get an odd cramp once in a while. My first period was longer. I would recommend ! Migraine 90% gone! My complexion on BC is great! I noticed when I got off the pill. But when I got on skyla my skin cleared and has its glow back. I got Skyla inserted 5 months ago. I had some pain during insertion, but nothing too bad, and some light cramping in the first 24 hours after insertion. Other than that, I've had no pain or cramping. I had my period once since it has been placed, but have extremely light spotting (I'm talking I don't even need a pantiliner kind of light) throughout the month. I could do without the spotting, but its great to not have a period! I have noticed that I get acne more since I've been on skyla, but it isn't bad, and has been manageable with a better skincare routine. All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with Skyla!Read More Read Less

This birth control has been hell on earth for me. My doctor wouldn't take it out until I gave it a few months, I now find myself crying and counting down the days. I have never had acne, ever. I now have cystic acne covering my face, neck, back, and chest. Painful, red, pimples everywhere. It is also com,on for this birth control to dry out your skin, another lovely side effect I got to experience. I have never been wonderfully sensative to birth controls but this one has been so horrible. Please consider NOT using this product!!! Read More Read Less

I am extremely sensitive to birth control; I have tried many variations of the pill and hated them all as well as could not remember to take it. I got the IUD in May 2014 (it has been six months). Insertion was extremely painful as I have never had children or been pregnant. I was fine the next day though and experienced cramping off and on for about three weeks as well as spotting. I have always had severe periods so it was never something I had not experienced before. I did develop cystic acne on my face chest and back and have never had an acne problem. At 23, I was not expecting to have that happen. At 6 months the acne is still happening but manageable with proper care and good body wash, toner, and lotions. I have not gained weight, I feel better, and have a better sex life not worrying about the pill. I do not have a period...once every two months I will cramp pretty bad for a few days and pms with minimal spotting. I am overall happy with Skyla and would do it again even with the insertion pain. I could not remember my pill and would freak out every month if I was 1 day late. I basically had a monthly appointment with CVS for a pregnancy test.. So I decided on Skyla. I put it one month ago and I spot every day. I did not have to much cramping honestly and the insertion did not hurt at all. I did not even realize when she inserted it. I have one child so maybe that helped. My only issue so fa is that I feel bloated. I excercise 3 time a week including abs, and my belly is big like I was about to have my period. That worries me. Sex is more spontaneous and enjoyable as i don't freak out everytime.Read More Read Less

I've had skyla for about 2 months now and I haven't had a single problem with it. There was a little bit of cramping the first 3 days but it went away soon after and wasn't hard to deal with. The only thing I hate is the constant spotting and always having to wear a liner every day but I was told it goes away in a few months so I'm still hopeful! Seeing some of these reviews from other people who haven't had a good experience was pretty intimidating before I had it inserted (wasn't the most pleasant experience) but I have to say I feel just as normal as I did without it in. I haven't had a change in acne or mood swings and absolutely no weight gain which I was a little disappointed in because I've been wanting to gain some weight. This is a great alternative to pills which I know I wouldn't remember to take. But before getting it inserted I would recommend taking a couple advils. Love skyla!Read More Read Less
