I have traveled to Uganda, Africa seven times in the past four years and have taken Malarone on each of those trips. I have been taking Malerone for more than a year and have not gotten malaria. I am worried about long term side effects though.

I still got malaria in Nigeria but I was there for 3 mos before getting it so I assume it helped. I think it might be responsible for some hair loss but can't be sure. I tolerated it well as long as I ate something before taking the med.

I have taken Malarone before with no side effects. I have been on the medication for 30 days now and have had 4 episodes of dizzeness with loss of peripheral vision(see stars and fuzzies at the outer edge of vision), memory loss(I can't spell the simplest words, and nothing in print looks correct but is.)and a headache that feels like pressure on my brain. These episodes last an hour or two and all I feel like doing is to sleep. I think I will stop taking Malarone today.

I am about to take this drug and got a little wierded out by the descriptions of rashes. I am very curious to know if your Dr. tested you for other diseases, such as Chikungunya, which causes a rash on the trunk and legs and extreme fatigue.

I start two days before I leave (per my doctor) and continue for seven days after I return, taking the tablet with breakfast each morning. My normal series is about eighteen tablets in all. I have not contracted malaria and have not had the side effects the other reviewers have noted. While I have had some pretty wild dreams, I have not had memory loss or issues with cognitive thinking. All in all, Malarone has performed wonderfully for me and I plan on taking it on my next trip to Uganda later this year. I am taking my young daughter along on this trip and plan on using the children's dose of Malarone for her. If we have any issues or side effects, I will update this post. Happy and safe traveling!Read More Read Less

Had taken Malarone at least 4 previous times with zero side-effects. 9 days into this round, on the plane ride back from Asia, with several more days to take it, started to feel slight tightness in chest - thought I was getting a cold. Got somewhat worse by the time I reached home. Next morning developed bright red very itchy rash all over and chest tightness was getting worse. By evening, went to walk in clinic. They thought I was having a heart attack due to abnormal EKG & sent me to the ER. ER confirmed it was just a drug reaction, not heart attack. Put me on large dose of Prednisone. Rash subsided & chest tightness went away after about 24 hr but rash would start coming back as Prednisone dose wore off and would go away again after next dose. After 3 days of that and rash almost completely gone, developed reaction to the Prednisone (had taken it many times with no problem before for poison ivy, etc). Stopped the Prednisone, Malarone rash & breathing issues stopped completely. Took about 2 weeks to finally feel back to normal. Now I can't take either drug. Read More Read Less

Three days after taking this, i broke out in a rash that seems to involved every hair follicle on my back. It gradually spread down from the top of my back to my thighs. I finally saw a Doctor who told me to stop (i've left the malarial area) and the rash seems to be reducing a bit. But overall, it was one of the worst side effects I've ever experienced.

I am 8 days into using it, taking at dinner time. At day 6 to 7, I experienced nausea and lots of indigestion, burping, and gas. By day 8, I took it without food, before bed. Several hours later I woke up to vomit, hours later diarrhea; next day acid indigestion. will try one more tonight after eating. If same reaction, I need to stop. I am back in the US outside the malaria zone, tempted to stop taking the medication.

I read the two most recent posts on lack of mental clarity and forgetfulness when using malarone. Although it's listed nowhere on the side effects, I'm also experiencing forgetfulness, difficulty finding words, and mental cloudiness. Is it possible that malarone is causing this?

I took this medication as prescribed prior to and during my 10 day trip to Nigeria. Upon returning, I began experiencing loss of appetite, dizziness, severe diarrhea, and itchy rashes thoughout my body. After returning to my physician, I was told to stop the medication. I still have not regaining much appetite, but the diarrhea has decreased. The rashes are still present. They are extremely painful and am currently using outmeal baths to ease the discomfort. I suggest using another anti-malarial.Read More Read Less

I had previously taken Malarone when traveling to areas with Malaria. This time I had 21 pills and on the 17th day, I broke out in a flaming rash 3" wide around my waist, it soon descended to the panty area and later in the day in the bra area. A local physician advised me to quit taking the drug, but I had already taken the drug for the day. He said the itching rash would go away in a week. The next day after my bottom lip started swelling I went to the emergency room and was given a shot of something powerful + 4 pills and a prescription Ranittidine Hydrochloride 150 mg tablets, twice daily for 30 days and Predisone 20 mg twice daily for 5 days. Today I am on my 4th day and still feel horrible (disoriented and tired out) but the rash has declined and has almost gone.Read More Read Less

I caught malaria in Nigeria, even though I was taking one pill of malarone a day for prevention.
