Had very large prostate for my age. Desire to urinate 3 to 4 times a night. Hard to drive home from work without stopping at rest area to urinate. I've been taking Avodart for 12 months as of now. I sleep through the night without getting up. No problem driving home. Flow of urine is much better. Side effects: I've had trouble with sexual desire. I can still get it up but ejaculate is minimal. Use...

Had almost total stoppage of urine due to enlarge prostate. This was slow process over ten years. (77 years of age.) Now have a catheter. Taking Avodart 5 mg for three months. Have no discernible side effects. Prostate has not decreased in size, since I had the catheter removed once and had to have it inserted within six hours and still have almost total blockage. Appointment on 29 November 2012 to determine next procedure. It appears to be TURP or the catheter the remainder of my life. I don't find the catheter too onerous, just being able to urinate is a godsend. Live alone so sex is not really an issue. Anyway I don't have many five year plans left, but desire to go to the happy hunting grounds with minimum discomfiture.Read More Read Less

I used avoidart in combination with flomax for the past 5 years. Suddenly I was confronted with a massive rash from my waist to the tops of my legs with patches on my chest and massive red stiations on my buttocks. i used Triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment on the breakout and it cleared in about eight hours but reappeared in spots that hadn't previously been affected. I will discontinue using Avodart and see my Urologist.

8/11/12, My urologist of 16 years ((I'm 65) has been giving me Avodart (& cardura) for 5 yrs. The only side effect is lack of semen. Also, he detected microscopic blood & pus in the urine, but couldn't determine where it was coming from. So he sent me to a nephrologist who diagnosed me w/polycystic acid, for which he prescribed sodium bicarbonate, 650mg, 4x/day. The pus (infection) is gone but the blood cells are still there. what gives?

Five years ago Avodart was prescribed because of enlarged prostate/urination problems. I also was taking Flomax, but before including Avodart. I "insist" that Avodart killed my sex drive and caused ED. My doctor says Avodart does not do that. It did! I was not forewarned! I stopped Avodart after several months. My ED problem remains!

This drug has reduced the size of my prostate but I still require some Flomax. It has also given me an embarrassing set of breasts. I now have to be careful of what shirts I wear and am considering breast reduction surgery.

I am 68 years old, and had to sit down to urinate because the stream was too irregular and weak. Ultra sound showed prostate was enlarged. Doctor prescribed Flowmax and Avodart and have been on this for 4 months. Urine flow has increased somwhat, but sex drive has been eliminated. Doctor now says that this is the "tradeoff" I have to make. Increase urine flow or reduce sex drive. I will give the drug another two months (6 in total) and if the urine flow is not magnificent I am stopping Avodart. Life is too short.Read More Read Less
