I began taking Synthroid for my hypothyroidism. My TSH came down, but my free t3 levels remained low and I was still having many many symtpoms - hair loss, extreme fatigue, swollen eyes and feet, muscle aches, depression....on and on. My endocrinologist added Cytomel to my treatment & it has been wonderful!! I am not completely symptom free and I know I need a slight increase in meds, but the chan...

I have been taking this pill for 3 weeks now and I have not seen any change. I have not lost a pound. I am very disappointed. I have gained weight since being on synthroid and though (as the doctor)I might loose something being on Cytomel. NOTHING!!! Maybe I haven't been on them long enough but...

I've been a hypothyroid patient since diagnosed with the disease at age 17; currently prescribed taking 200 mg Levothroid on a daily basis. My doctor originally added 5 mcg of Cytomel with the Levothroid medication, I liked that my circulation in my hands and feet improved...no cold hands or feet at all. But now my doctor removed the daily dose of Cytomel and has substituted the Levothroid rx for "Synthroid" - same daily dose. I have more energy now and recently dropped a significant amount of weight with in 10 weeks. However, since being off the Cytomel I'm experiencing the cold feet and hands again and it's miserable. I don't understand why did my doctor dropped the Cytomel in the first place? Has anyone else experienced changes such as these with a change from synthetic to "natural" thyroid medication?Read More Read Less

I had been taking Synthroid and felt pretty good. My endocrinologist suggested a decrease the synthroid and add in Cytomel to get little more energy and better moods. I have been on it for 2 weeks and I have stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. I plan to stop taking it ASAP.

I have written a review few months back butI feel compelled to retract the good things I said about cytomel.I have been on synthroid 100 mcg for ~ 15 years but never felt myself, sleepy, short term memmory loss, blurred vision. When started on 5mcg cytomel and 75mcg synthroid I developed insomia and felt jittery but my vision cleared quite considerably, energy levels increased. I was quite thrilled. Then dr. changed that dose to 50 mcg synthroid and left cytomel on 5 mcg.Things started turning really bad for me then Maybe there were contributing factors like loosing my job, starting new with high anxiety levels. My anxiety went out the roof.I was tense unbearably since 5 in the morning till afternoon. My pulse got to 140 and depression set in with suicidal thoughts.I thought that I will end up in a psychiatric ward.So I am back to Synthroid 100mcg alone. After 6 weeks I am slowly coming back.My pulse still 100 on occasions but less often and shorter in duration.Mood still poor but I am not suicidal. My take on it is that the Cytomel fueled anxiety and tsh of 9 due to decreased synthroid of 50 mcg brought on the depression.I had A trip to hell and back. I know that we are all different and have different set points for thyroird hormones. If I had to do it again I will start 2.5 mcg = half pill of 5mcg and do not decrease synthroid too much.My previous post under Anette. I am posting this because this site has been very helpful to me and I would like to return the favor. My endocrinologist put me on 100 mcg Synthroid and after a few weeks I felt terrible even though my TSH number was "perfect". I had a vicious depression early in the morning before taking the Synthroid and again at the end of the day and I was so devoid of physical and mental energy that I could not function. I was aware of the Synthroid T3/T4 literature and my primary care physicial put me on 50 mcg Synthroid (gen.) + 10 MCG Cytomel. This took care of the depression/energy level problem, but after a few weeks I had screaming headaches. I tried halving my dosage to half a 50 mcg Synthroid and just one 5 mcg Cytomel and this took care of the headaches. I don't feel great, as I used to on Thyrolar, but I feel OK. I have sweating and a little acne on my chest, which I don't like. My last test showed my T4 a little low so I am going to 1 1/2 5 mcg Cytomel tablets with the 1/2 50 mcg Synthroid to see if that helps that number. My overall TSH was still low, about half as bad as it was at its worst, so, since I can't increase the Synthroid, I am investigating other solutions to the overall problem, perhaps the natural thyroid. Before we knew my thyroid was crashing, I didn't even notice feeling bad and would like to try not taking anything but my primary care doctor doesn't feel comfortable letting my bad TSH level just go on, even if I were to feel OK. She says it is associated with heart problems, among other things. I hope this is helpful. Thanks to all.Read More Read Less

I developed Hypothyroidism after my 2nd pregnancy. I have very low T3 and very high T4. I am on 25IU of Cytomel (generic) and BC but no other meds. Cytomel seemed to work for the first 2-3 weeks, but since then I am extremely uncomfortable. Feel uneasy, on edge (twitchy), eating a lot, tired. I feel like I have a Thyroid problem as well as the Cytomel side-effects. Also, I can't remember anything in the short term. I get "sick" 2 or more times a week - headaches, nausea mostly. Seeing doctor #2 for more help.Read More Read Less

I've been on Synthroid only for 5 years, but as some other review's noted, never felt like myself. I had no "umph" for life. After the first day of taking Cytomel, I could tell a difference. I feel like my old self is back, and believe me, that makes me happy & my husband!

I was diagnosed low thyroid because I suggested to my doc that I had had good results from taking a vitamin combo that was recommended for metabolism and underactive thyroid. He tested and started me on levoxyl, later added cytomel. since then, I have put on weight, have skin itching from time to time, and major hair loss. I intend to get off this stuff ASAP.

I took cytomel along with prozac and wellbutrin for depression. The cytomel was supposed to act as a mood elevator but didn't work for me. I was taking 75 mgs. a day for about a month.

CYTOMEL WAS PRESCRIBED BY MY DOCTOR ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO. MY TSH LEVELS WERE ALL OVER THE MAP. ONCE I STARTED TAKING CYTOMEL, EVERYTHING IMPROVED FOR ME.. TSH LEVELS WENT BACK TO NORMAL FOR ME. DR. DID NOT HAVE TO KEEP CHANGING MY DOSAGE OF SYNTHROID. I HAVE HAD GRAVES DISEASE SINCE 1985, SO I AM HYPOTHROID AT THIS TIME. I AM ALSO A BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR FOR 9 YEARS NOW. MY PROBLEM IS THAT MY INSURANCE COMPANY HAS STOPPED PAYING FOR THE CYTOMEL. IT IS NO LONGER ON THEIR FORMULARY. NO GENERIC IS AVAILABLE. I HAVE TRIED TO ASK FOR AN OVERRIDE WITH NO RESULTS. I AM A SENIOR (65 YEARS YOUNG) LIVING IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING WITH NOT MANY RESOURCES TO PAY FOR THIS MEDICATION ON MY OWN. I HAVE BEEN OFF THIS MEDICATION FOR ABOUT ONE WEEK NOW. I AM FEELING LETHARGIC, NO ENERGY, AND I SEEM TO BE HUNGRY ALL THE TIME. CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THIS DILEMMA? THANK YOU, IN ADVANCE..Read More Read Less

I took 5 pills of 5mcg Liothyronine and experienced bad breathing problems, especially walking and talking at the same time when on a incline or steps. Has anyone reading this had trouble with breathing problems taking this Rx. I was on Armour Thyroid 15 mcg. for years w/o any problems but that is no longer available. I cannot take Synthroid or the generic of it so I at a loss as to what to take.

Thyroidectomy done because of cancer. I was put on Cytomel with Synthroid because the doctor wanted to even out my levels of T3 and T4. The first week of taking it, my arms started going numb!! Had headaches too. Had to stop taking immediately because the side effects I was having were frightening!

I have had an underactive thyroid for quite a while and even though I was taking leventhoid, my legs and ankles would swell by the end of the day. Taking Sytomel in conjunction with the leventhoid has cured it all. I feel better than I have in years. It really works for me.

My doc has been readjusting my levo rx for some time and recently added cytomel for some T3 issue. It's all a guessing game but my main problem is a crazy itchy rash and hives I have been getting. Not sure if it's the new meds but will have to wait and see with another round of lab tests. Anyone else get skin reactions on cytomel?

I was diagnosed with Grave's about 5 years ago and underwent an abalation. Was treated with various doses of Synthroid. Continually gained weight, especially after quitting smoking 1.5 years ago (adding on another 20 lbs). After starting liothyronine (generic cytomel), I feel more alert, energetic and have started to see some of the lbs come off. I have no side effects and am now using the extra energy to exercise. I do try to take my 2nd pill of the day before 4 pm so it doesn't keep me awake and so far it's worked. I feel great and am happy that my scale is creeping downward instead of upward!Read More Read Less

USERS BEWARE!! Please check with your doctors - Yes, you will lose weight but, there will be a high price to pay. I felt great at first. Then when my family doc checked my thyroid it did not even register on my lab tests - it was fried! When I got a 2nd Endocronologist opionion about the dosage I was on she asked me if I was told about the side effects and of course I said NO. I "trusted" the doctor that gave me the medication. I was given a bone density test and in comparison to the test I had one year prior I suffered significant bone lose as a result of using the cytomel. I have since had to have major back surgery due to degenerative disc disease. It took a full year for my thyroid to function normal again and all of the weight I had lost came back. So the moral of the story is: it's a feel good drug that has it's price to pay and IT'S NOT WORTH IT IN THE END!Read More Read Less
