Michael J. Breus, PhD
Michael J. Breus, PhD, ABSM, is a diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Skidmore College in New York and received the Mellon Undergraduate Fellowship in Psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. He completed a post-baccalaureate premedical program at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and has received both a master's and doctorate degree from the University of Georgia. Breus completed his internship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson with a specialty in sleep disorders and neuropsychological testing. He is board-certified in both clinical psychology and clinical sleep disorders.
Breus is the "sleep expert" for WebMD, answering questions daily on the sleep disorders message board. He also contributes features on a variety of sleep issues and leads live online discussions with WebMD users.
Breus is on the faculty of the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine, has taught several CME courses on sleep disorders, has provided editorial services for many medical and psychology peer-reviewed journals, and has given more than 200 presentations to professionals and the public. He has recently joined Sleep Holdings, the only publicly traded sleep diagnostics and therapy company in the U.S., as chairman of their Clinical Advisory Board. His private practice in Scottsdale, Ariz., is a collaboration with Southwest Spine and Sports, where he sees patients with both sleep and pain problems.
Breus has been interviewed by Readers Digest, Time, Life, Elle, Self, Shape,Men's Health, Prevention, Parent's Magazine, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal and has given live interviews for both local and national news programs and entertainment television and radio shows such as The Early Show, The View, The Today Show, and many more.
Breus recognizes the profound yet largely unrecognized impact that sleep disorders have on our health and wellness, performance, productivity, safety, and health care costs. As co-founder of Sound Sleep, LLC, he is dedicated to raising the awareness of sleep disorders to both the public and the health care community and to developing innovative education and communication programs for their assessment and treatment.
Breus has published articles in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior, Physiology and Behavior, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and The Journal of Pain. He has also written a book, Good Night: The Sleep Doctor’s 4 Week Program to Better Sleep and Better Health.
