Mpule Kwelagobe

Mpule Kwelagobe, Miss Universe 1999, is the first delegate ever from her home country of Botswana to enter the Miss Universe Pageant. She has worked on behalf of the official cause of the Miss Universe Organization, HIV/AIDS, using her title to champion HIV/AIDS prevention, particularly among adolescents, and to promote the rights of women and youth to gain access to information on family planning and receive proper sexual and reproductive health care and services. Kwelagobe is involved in making policies regarding HIV/AIDS in Washington and participates in many charitable organizations. Recently named the Goodwill Ambassador to Botswana for the United Nations Population Fund, she opened the Mpule Kwelagobe Children's Village in Botswana, which provides shelter, counseling, and medical attention to 400 children affected and infected with HIV.
