Is that bump on your foot really a bunion? Or could it be arthritis instead? Here’s how to tell. If the bump is on the 'side' of your foot, it’s a bunion. If the bump's on 'top' and your big toe is painful and stiff, it’s probably an arthritic condition called hallux rigidus (hal-ux rij-ah-dus). That's what Frances Locke (lock-e) had and she says the arthritis even made walking difficult.
I was uncomfortable. I couldn’t walk distances. I did, but I suffered for it.
Because you're not able to bend the big toe, you cannot lever off at all.
Foot and ankle expert, Mark Myerson, says arthritis in the big toe joint can be from a structural problem in the foot or from repetitive trauma to the toe joint.
The cartilage lining gets bruised, the bruising then gets replaced through a microscopic wear and tear process which then leads to arthritis.
At first, treatments include anti-inflammatories, stiff-soled shoes and orthotics. If that doesn't help - surgery is an option. A cheilectomy, (kile-ek-toh-me) – where doctors shave off painful bone spurs, is the simplest procedure.
The most extensive of these procedures is to glue the big toe joint together, where it simply gets fused.
Frances, who had both arthritis 'and' a bunion, had the bone spurs removed and her toe realigned.
Much better than before the surgery and no, no pain. All that inflammation in my joints has gone away.
And that made walking easy again. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
