Protecting his ears is now part of the game plan for Dave Hatt. But years of on-the-job noise exposure took their toll in the form of tinnitus.
The sound at times it would be like somebody blowing a whistle in your ear or just a loud ringing. Other times it would be, sound like a freight train.
The relentless noise disrupted every moment of Dave’s life.
It's just very debilitating. They're not able to sleep. They're not able to just sit and relax or concentrate because they always have this, just, very annoying sound in their head.
Medication is not always effective…turning off that racket is the goal of a new device called the neuromonics (neuro monn ix) oasis. It plays just four songs, but…
Embedded in the music is a sort of a shower sound, a white noise type sound that's designed to help mask the tinnitus.
After two to three months, the treatment focuses on retraining the brain.
They back off the masking sound so that the patient actually is exposed to their tinnitus in very, very little tiny bursts, and it again teaches their brain to learn to ignore it.
Doctor Elliot has seen how quickly the device helps her patients.
You'll kind of just see it in their body language. It'll sort of, you know, feel like they're more relaxed, they'll, they'll kind of sigh and just you'll see this release of tension just a bit.
Dave's felt that relief, and can almost forget he has the condition.
If I sit here now and think and concentrate… I hear a little bit but it's not like before.
A welcome transformation from an incurable disorder. For WebMD, I’m Damon Meharg Sandee LaMotte.
