I used Canada Balsam at Uni to mount geological microscope slides. Next day I got a rash on my fingers that spread up my arms. It subsided after a few weeks, but when I used balsam again the same thing happened. It sensitised me to resins, an allergy that has stayed with me for 40 years. I cannot touch fir trees without getting a rash.
