Many people have experienced the annoying, sometimes downright painful sensation of niacin flush at least once during their life, and probably didn't even know what it was. Niacin, by nature, is a great way of reducing your cholesterol. Many over-the-counter cholesterol medications include high does of niacin, among other ingredients. However, one of the unfortunate side effects of taking doses o...

WARNING: taking Niacin (Vitamin B-3) at only 500 MG/ day cost me dearly! My neurologist(a specialist in a sub-type of neurology of which there are only dozen in the US) determined it was toxic causing me total failure of my autonomic nervous system (autonomic polyneuropathy) and these nerves don't grow back! Thanks to that soon after I noticed the problems I continue to deal with 10 yrs later. Dia...

I have been taking 2000 mg of Niacin for 8 months. My Triglycerides have gone down 149 points.(That's almost unreal) My HDL has gone up 15 points.(Now it's above normal) But my LDL has gone up 40 points.(I guess I can't change my genetics). My doctor recommended increasing to 3000 mg of Niacin for 3 months before she puts me on a low does medication to bring my LDL down. It did take me several weeks to increase my 50 mg dose to 2000. I ate a non fat snack and took an aspirin 20 minutes before the niacin. I increased 50-100 mg every few days until the dosage was at 2000. There was some flushing, but I'd rather tolerate flushing and itching than be on a prescription medication for the rest of my life. Niacin's few side effects out weighs any dangerous side effects that other medications can cause. I have recommended to others, who have failed with cholesterol lowering prescriptions, to talk with their doctor. Read More Read Less

The burning sensation was very severe, with aspirin not helping at all. It caused extreme pain keeping me from sleeping. The drug stayed in my system through the next day.

For those of you not seeing the results you expected, you should try perscription Niaspan. My Father found this info out from a highley respected Cardiologist. It is actually indicated for regression of Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and the only form of Niacin regulated by the FDA. Ask your Dr to try it free because they have coupons and dont forget the flushing will go away after time.

It causes severe flushing (Hive-like itching) and taking Benedryl to relieve it makes it hard to wake up the next morning.

I have been taking the Niaspan for over 6 years now. Every so often I get the flushing, but it was at a time that I forgot to take the niaspan more then a hour after the baby aspirin, or sooner then 20 minutes..my own bad.Just remember to take the Niaspan at least 20 minutes after your aspirin, & before 90 minutes of the aspirin.( re dose aspirin if u fail)Thank god IM still alive.Bear with the flushing,it will pass, drinking cold water helped with the flushing as well.

I have a family history of premature heart disease. Three generations of men died with heart attack at age 41 or younger. My dads first cousin (female)died in her early 50's from a heart attack and his twin sister had her first heart attack at age 35. She is still living at age 75. My HDL was 51 and I wanted to increase it. I started with 250mg before bed daily, and I took 1 325mg ASA. I increased the dose by 259mg on a weekly basis. I am now at 1000mg each night. My HDL is now 73.
