Adam VanWert, PharmD, PhD, is a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He teaches anatomy and physiology, toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacology of cardiovascular, infectious, rheumatic, gastrointestinal, and renal diseases. He also teaches receptor theory and a course on cannabis pharmacology. He is currently researching consumer products and hemp plants for their chemical composition using state-of-the-art, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and mass spectrometry. VanWert studied renal drug transporters (organic anion transporters) for his dissertation work, where he identified new drug-drug interactions. Many such transporters are now recognized as major targets of drug-drug and drug-food interactions.
VanWert received his Doctorate in Pharmacy, summa cum laude, from Wilkes University’s Nesbitt School of Pharmacy, and his PhD, summa cum laude, from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He has published 24 peer-reviewed research articles and has over 1,200 citations in the literature. He has received the Interdisciplinary Teaching Award and the Scholarship Award for research at Wilkes University.
