Janie McQueen has been a freelance writer for WebMD since 2015. She writes feature stories, medical reference articles, and slideshows on a wide variety of subjects, from how-to to highly technical. Her background is in print journalism, reporting for major metro newspapers including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Greenville (SC) News, where her beats included law enforcement, government, and human interest. She’s the author of three nonfiction books.

McQueen has a B.A. in English literature and writing from the University of South Carolina. A native of Beaufort, South Carolina, she taught herself to type at age 7 on her grandfather’s upright typewriter and published her first newspaper soon after, which cost 10 cents a copy and lasted for two editions. 

McQueen lives with her family including teenage twins on the Big Island of Hawai’i, the home of Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world. She has two grown children who live in Atlanta.
