Tonja Wynn Hampton, MD is a Medical Editor for WebMD. Her responsibilities
include selecting and editing consumer and physician news stories, identifying
clinically appropriate graphics, and providing medical expertise for WebMD
Health, particularly in the areas of pediatrics, allergy/asthma, and women's
health.
A pediatrician, Dr. Hampton attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill (UNC-CH) as a John Motley Morehead Scholar and National Achievement
Scholar. During her undergraduate years, she was very active in student
government and choral music, and served as a teaching assistant in the
chemistry department. She graduated in May 1985 with a BA in chemistry.
Having fallen in love with the Chapel Hill area, Dr. Hampton chose to attend
UNC-CH School of Medicine, where she was active with the Student National
Medical Association and worked as a research assistant for a project on the
underuse of cervical screening in low-income black women. She earned her
medical degree in May 1990, and completed her residency in pediatrics at Emory
University in Atlanta in June 1993.
Following residency, Dr. Hampton joined South Dekalb Pediatrics, PC in Decatur,
GA, where she practiced general pediatrics for 2½ years. She later joined
Children's Medicine, PC in Lawrenceville, where she practiced general
pediatrics for 3½ years. As a general pediatrician, Hampton's special areas of
interest included well-child care and teaching parenting skills.
Hampton has a great love for her husband, Louis, and daughters, Morgan and
Janelle. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
