I've had UC for 13 years and would have a flare-up twice a year for 2 to 3 months at a time, every year! (seasonal) This drug has gotten me off Prednisone which I loved too but wasn't healthy for me. My doctor gave me this drug and I love it! I've been in remission for the first time since I started this drug. I take 50mg daily and I have no side effects and I have my life back!!!!

I was diagnosed with UC when I was just turning 18 its been almost 6 years now. I started azathioprine when I saw a new GI when I moved to a different state. I did some blood work before starting the medication and I did some more blood work after 2 weeks of being on it. About a couple weeks into taking the medication I had severe pain in my abdomen that radiated around to my back and I could hardly get comfortable. The doctor in the ER was dismissive when I asked her to check and see if the new medication was causing all of these symptoms. I actually forgot to take it a couple of times when I got out and surprisingly I felt better. I took a pill last night, and I woke up with severe pain and I actually vomited this time around. The family I stay with made me see the GI, he actually pulled up my records from the hospital and when they did blood-work the first time and the 2 weeks in. He realized that it really was doing what it was supposed to, but recognized that I unfortunately had a spike in my pancreas which he attributed to the new medication. He pulled me off of it immediately and is wanting me to recover before he starts me on the top tier of the biological medications. So the moral of my story is always ALWAYS check with a specialist, and don't take someone's word who has absolutely no experience in this area. It can actually end up costing you.Read More Read Less

I have autoimmune hepatitis and have been on this med for 8 months, first 50mg then 100mg per day. Started it with prednisone, but off that now. Has done a great job reducing AST and ALT numbers, but now have frequent nausea, heartburn type pain especially in the early AM. Has been happening after meals lately. I'm afraid that the heartburn is being mistaken for pancreatitis. I had that in 2012 when my gall bladder died and was taken out, so I have vivid memories of what that felt like (had spells for 7 years prior). The pancreatitis also caused insulin resistance. No one seems to want to look into the matter if nothing else than to put my mind at ease. Have to take the aza for another year before they check if I'm in remission. I think by reading others' comments, it might be why I have muscle weakness/soreness and tiredness. Maybe the prednisone masked those symptoms.Read More Read Less

I have been taking this drug for Polymyositis. While it works okay for the muscular aspects of my disease, I still wake up with pain and stiffness and need to use a wheelchair by the end of the day. In addition, my kidneys are significantly impacted by this drug. At first I thought it was just a urinary tract infection and went to the doctor. But the symptoms have only increased with no infection. The symptoms stop when I am off of the medication for a couple of days. In addition, my legs, hands, feet and abdomen swell badly. I think this drug has the potential to damage the kidneys. Read More Read Less

3 weeks into therapy, I developed febrile reaction about 2 1/2 hrs after 50mg dose: severe uncontrollable shaking, nausea and feeling like I'm going to pass out, fever of 103 to as high as 105 degrees., lasting 24 hours. The rest of the 24 hours I can hardly force myself to eat, feel full all the time, am extremely weak, insomnic.

I have had ulcerative colitis for almost 18 years. This drug, combined with asacol, is the only thing that has kept me alive. I have been on 150 mg a day for over 10 years. Because of this drug, I have been in remission for close to 9 years with an excellent quality of life.

Have pan colitis, prednisone dependent, taking aza.for 6 months. Started on 25 mg. low dose due to low tmpt, no help, increased to 50 mg. greatly reduced symptoms, ready to increase, but now have high liver enzyme (alkaline phosphate). Doing full liver function panel and ultrasound of liver. Discussed biologics next. Advise everyone with IBD to see an IBD specialist along with gastro.

I am taking this med for Mixed Connective Tissue Disease. I previously had a reaction (bad rash) from leflunomide, and was switched to this drug 2 months ago. I believe I am still not feeling all of the potential benefits of this drug, but have had no problems taking the med.

I have had Crohn's disease for 7 years. I have used azathioprine for 6 years with great results. I previously tried several other medications that either were ineffective or caused intolerable side effects. I have no side effects with this med.

A drug with many 'niggling', and sometimes briefly uncomfortable side-effects.......but it worked beautifully for me personally. The fact that it works...and therefore keeps me alive - far outweighs any frustration with unpleasant side-effects.

I have lost all my hair and finger nails and toe nails and my dermatologist has suggested taking this drug, he thinks I have lichen planus, but I do not experience the breakouts. I have not started on the drug, as I am not sure he is correct. Has anyone had any experience like this?????????

I have only been on Azathioprine for approx one month. I can't really feel a difference as far as the RA. It is causing nausea though. Stabbing pains in the stomach. I have tried eating, drinking milk and other foods before and after taking pill. Nothing seems to help.
