HSV2 for over 41 yrs. Get this: when discovered my Primary Care doc said the only treatment is painting the affected area with yellow dye and exposing it to lightbulb... boy have things gotten better. He did correctly state I have it for life. I began using acyclovir less than 2 yrs ago (3 pills every day for 7 days from initial outbreak symptoms) and I continued to get monthly outbreaks.. which ...

After two days lower back pain kicked in. Could not bear it. Will substitute outbreaks for pills.

I found out I had herpes about 5 days after the episode started. But trust me, there was no end in sight. It was terrible. I had 102F fever and felt rundown the whole time. I was tested and found out that I have HSV1 (down there) This is somewhat better news as there are not as many reoccurrences with HSV1 in the genital area. I was given 1000mg Valtrex to take and within the first 2 days my sores started drying and closing. It has now been one week and I can barely tell they were there. I wouldn't choose a different route for viral suppression. Read More Read Less

I have delt with Shingles for 5 years and last year I was told Valtrax would assist in the duration of my Shingles outbreaks. (I also take 75mg Lyrica) I take 1 pill every 8 hours for 4 days. I would say without medication my symptoms last 1-10 days. With the medication it lasts from 1-5 days which makes a big difference when you are in pain. **It does not remove pain but reduce the duration of the Shingles**

Was diagnosed with shingles and took this drug which caused a severe reaction of uncontrollable shivering/shaking and extreme chills. I felt freezing and ill. I took benadryl and waited it out to see if I needed to go to the E.R. (I didn't thankfully). I also got diarrhea (multiple upsets) within the hour after taking it. I am going to try a different antiviral instead, this was not well tolerated at all.

I am 19 and somehow developed shingles. Was put on Valtrex a week after having developed shingles. There is an improvement with the rash itself, but this medication makes me have very uncomfortable stomach pains and nausea.

I started using valcyclovir about 2-1/2 years ago because of frequent outbreaks of mouth ulcers. Initially my doctor prescribed 2 pills 3 times daily which helped to reduce the pain and eliminate the sores. After about 6 months he started me on a daily regiment of 1 pill, and I would have an occasional mouth ulcer which would not be painful. But a wonderful side benefit has been little to no symptoms of my genital herpes which I developed about 35 years ago. Prior to using the valcyclovir, I would experience a sore and pain about every 2 to 3 months. This medication has been a wonderful miracle worker!!!Read More Read Less

I was quickly diagnosed with shingles and prescribed Valtrex, which within two days controlled the pain. for me, it was a " wonder " drug. Eight months later, I received the shingles shot.

I started on Valtrex within 6 hours of waking up with Shingles. It stopped it in its tracks.....no more new spots and it reduced the severity of the ones I had. I had very little nerve pain and felt back to normal within a few weeks.

I have had herpes for 20 years back of my leg got it from a bathroom seat when I worked at a hospital. Doctors say it's not possible but I know it is because I was not with anyone for 5 years before I got this. It only broke out once a year in the summer on the back of my left thigh never on my genitals. Doctors don't know anything about herpes. 15 years after I got it I somehow transferred it to my forehead above my eye. I got Valtrex to control it because I was concerned about it getting into my eye. Again doctors said it wasn't possible to get HSV 2 on the face. After I started taking Valtrex it would breakout several times a year. Doctor again said it had nothing to do with Valtrex but I know it does. The meds are causing a rebound once you stop taking it the herpes comes back right away. I have to taper down and take 1 a day for 3 weeks that usually stops it. Read More Read Less

I have noticed I don't need much of this if I think Im getting a cold sore. I can take 1/4 to 1/2 of a 1000mg pill and it always stops it. I don't need to take it again in 12 hrs. I think it is not leaving my body very fast. it has made me very sensitive to vinegar things. I can drink tons of cola, but no vinegar. I have more problems with citrus and dairy now than ever before too. I know this for certain.

I'm on day 6 of a 7-day Valtrex prescription for Shingles. I don't think the Valtrex is doing much to help me. Thankfully, no dizziness or "mush brain" that others have reported. The shingles rash did not seem to spread any more after I started Valtrex. I also don't have significant pain from the shingles, just itching that comes and goes. I hope the rash dries up quickly!

I used to take it only when I would get an outbreak, but I was getting really bad ones at least once a month, if not more often. I'm on it daily for the passed few months. I have had outbreaks on the medication, but not as severe than when I wasn't on it. No more lesions, just the pain, burning, tingling, and so on. I get the outbreaks during my period/or after, or if I'm really stressed. I recommend it, the side effects aren't too bad, just some occasional nausea. Drink lots of water on it! Don't want kidney damage. Read More Read Less

I am a nurse who contracted Herpes Simplex II on the edge of my finger near the nail. It was initially a bacterial infection which was complicated by the virus likely acquired while doing mouth care for a patient. This was 15 years ago. I have been on suppressive therapy ever since with no outbreaks for the past five years. I just weaned myself down to 500mg three times a week without problem. I worry about the long term use.

Previous shingles episode several years ago. Age 77, male. Symptoms began as severe itching in inner corner of eye. After two days, swelling of eye tissue and nasal involvement and small lump over bridge of nose. Then nose watering, sneezing. Diagnosed with Shingles virus by Ophthalmologist. Started taking Valtrex. Improvement within two days and continuing. No side effects, yet.

Medicine does shorten shingles episodes, but side effects for me are severe. Headache, stomach ache, back ache and dizziness. Unable to stand without breaking into a severe sweat and then vomiting because of dizziness. I've read for some this passes, but for me gets worse every day.

Every has a different severity of their hsv. I had a horrible first 3 months after my first outbreak while taking it twice a day and etc. went fine after first 3 months. Now they're for sure coming back everytime I'm ovulating and a few days before my period. Valtrex helps the pain go away a little but I'm one of the unfortunate ones who still have issues. Mostly lesions but I can feel the outbreak in my cervix area. I feel like I did increase skin sensitivity as I have gotten some type of sunburn this summer after using SPF 50 on me all day. Years before valtex I only burned once in the beginning of summer. Valtex makes me feel more alert and focus and I actually sleep better with it. I never feel drowsy in the morning from the meds which is good. Taking it in the day isn't too bad, I prefer night though. Read More Read Less
