While this drug has eleviated my symptoms very effectively for over 5 years, I believe, I am very concerned with the things that my friends and collegues (many in the medical & health fields) have been saying. For example, taking the medicine usually takes care of the symptoms, but over time, it can cause one's thyroid to almost stop work completely (due to the drug doing all the work for it). Als...

I would like to know experiences of those taking Levothyroxine while pregnant. I just got my prescription and wanted to do some research first. Its been helpful reading how other people are reacting to this medication. I just haven't read anyone's experience who has been pregnant and taking this medication.

I started out hyperthyroid, then it went hypo on it's own. My Dr. started me on a very low dose of the Levo. I have had every possible side effect, except hair loss. I've had high blood pressure for the first time in my life. I am dizzy, I have extreme irrability, anxiety, heartracing and pounding, I feel like I am going crazy. My Dr. gave me the O.K. to go off of it and see what happens. It did help to put my thyroid in a normal range, but I feel awful. I am very shaky and have muscle weakness. I drop everything. I can't think straight. I feel like I am stoned, or drunk. It is possible that my thyroid will go back to being underactive, but I am really praying it will stay in a normal range.Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed 7 years ago with hypothyroidism...just about six months after having my second child. I was 25 at the time with no family history. I went in because of tingling in my extremities, especially my toes. After asking lots of questions and doing blood work, my doctor gave me the results. My levels were at 67...many times higher than normal. She put me on 100 mcg of Levothroid and I've been on it ever since. I didn't notice anything as regards appetite loss or weight loss but the fatigue definitely subsided. Recently, I've been experiencing renewed symptoms: fatigue, depression, intolerance to cold, constipation, etc. Doctor did new blood tests and they showed even on 100 mcg, my levels were elevated to 5.7. Not exactly super high but definitely out of range. I'm supposed to see him again in a month and we'll do another blood test before he adjusts medication. Overall, I've been happy with this medication but did go through a period of time where I had a lot of dizziness and tingling in my arms and legs. Had to get MRI to rule out brain tumor but eventually it went away. Have no idea if it was attributed to Levothroid or hypothyroidism but possible. No bad side effects from this medication and will continue to take it as doctor prescribes.Read More Read Less

I had my thyroids removed on 3/27/08, they were making me very tired, I had problems sleeping because I had problems breathing, they had grown so large that they had to be removed. Two weeks later they started me on levothyroxine 100mcg, they gave me gas, I was always burping so when I went back in two weeks they increased by dose to 150mcg. I still burp a lot but I feel better, waiting 3 wks. to take labs to see what it saids. I also have lost 10 lbs. in that short time. No hair loss or dry skin, everything is really going good so far.Read More Read Less

Started with a .05 mg dose and experie3nced immediate dissiness. Doc lowered the dose to half a pill, dissiness persisted along with a strange feeling on reclining. Stopped pill immediately. Shortly thereafter I developed double vision. Tempting to attribute that to the drug but no proof of that. Glad to be off it.

had no symptoms of underactive thyroid, but blood tests showed it. 6 wks on .05 mg, no noticeable change. 6wks on .075 mg, did'nt fall asleep quite as fast when going to bed. 3 days on .1, could'nt sleep at all. Switching from taking it in the morning to taking the .1 at bedtime, could sleep about 4 or 5 hrs. Appear to need between .075 and .1 doseage taken at bedtime.

I've been on this medication for 3 months. No noticeable +'s. Hair loss is really concerning. I've also noticed an increase in migraines but didn't attribute them to this medication until I read other reviews.

I am a 24 year old female who was about 30 lbs. overweight, depressed, had hot flshes, and was always exhausted when I found out about my Underactive Thyroid. I have been on 75mcg for about a year and a half. It has taken this medication this long to stabalize my condition but, finally I am happy about the results. I have started to lose weight, about 20 lbs.), my hot flashes have disappeared for the most part, and I am not as exhausted as I use to be. The depression part still was fluctuating so I started taking Wellbutrin XL, which also helped with my weight loss. I do get dry skin and scalp off and on and am sensitive to hot and cold extremes but, overall you have to be patient witht his medication. I am sure it is not for everyone but, give it time and do your blood tests so you can find the right level of meds that you should be on. At first I swore up and down that this medication was not working but, like I said a year and a half later I feel good about where I am at. Don't give up on it quite yet, it takes time, your Thyroid is a major hormone controller in your body. This medication is not going to work miracles over a 3 month period, it probably took you much longer than that to figure out that you had a Thyroid problem it is trying to balance you out. Good Luck!!!Read More Read Less

The first doctor who diagnosed my hypothyroidism prescribed a very lose dosage of 25 mg. My PCP upped it, and that was much more effective. My PCP now wants to lower the dosage after 90 days, because my thyroid is functioning very well. I am a bit nervous, but suppose that this is typical treatment, and does seem to make some sense. He recommends that I do another blood test in 7 weeks, before he prescribes it again. My sister has a thyroid condition, and has taken medication for several years now. Read More Read Less

Have been taking it since October or November, lately I've been experiencing dry, brittle hair, significant hair loss and some memory loss. I already have fine thin hair anyway so I don't need to lose anymore. As of today, I will not be taking it anymore.

It takes a few months to get the dose adjusted, so just be patient and you will feel better as the days and months go by. I did feel some bloating the first few weeks of taking it, but as my TSH level came down, the hypo symptoms started to abate. Now, by month 3, I am finally getting my energy back and feeling better. Just give the medicine some time to work.

I have lost 1/3 of my hair, it has lost it's colour also. It appears to be a permanent loss. I've taken Thyroid meds .50 - 75 mg. over the last 4 yrs.. Looking for a natural hormone instead. I'm also very tired for no apparent reason.
