I have been on every medication there is over the last 10 years. This is the first medication that has ever worked to prevent all of my seizures both convulsive and partial. I'm not tired all day like with other medications either.

I have taken three different types of medication for my Epilepsy, Dilantin 100mg kaps, Dilantin 30 mg Kaps, Those are taken together for me, Before that, I was taking Kepra 1000mg, and Before that I was taking Depakote 500 mg. When I first started taking the depakote, I was okay, and everything was fine, but for some reason I decided to do some research on the medicine and found out that it can c...

This med has decreased my seizures greatly, I am also currently on Zonisimide for partial seizures. I previously trid Keppra, Depekote, Tegritol, Trileptol, Zongran none of which I could stand. Either they didn't work or they had terrible side effects. This med IS NOT PERFECT, my levels have gone up and down. The last time my levels went up my allergies were bothering me badly and I missed the sighns until the level got to 50.9. All meds have side effects but the side effects of Dilantin I can tolerate for the most part. My only gripes are the up and down levels and the dental problems.Read More Read Less

This medication is pretty effective for prevention of seizures but the your level of this medication in you goes up and down unexpectedly via your kidneys. my last seizure was because all of sudden i had no dilantin in my system. Tons of long term side effects. I was switched to divalproex.

After 8 wks have serum level of 36 (range should be 10-20). I weigh 110 and took 300 mg per day. Weaning down has resulted in complex partial seizures. During inital 2 to 6 weeks had SEVERE suicide thoughts. Bioavailability is inconsistent in individuals so check on toxicity symptoms so you know what to look for.

I have been taking Dilantin for almost 5 years and have little or no side effects. I was recently diagnosed with a binign cist on my liver through a CT scan. One must frequently check ALT for possible liver damage. Only downside that I can see other than gum problems.

I sarted taking dilantin early in the year 2009... i had been having seizures that began as absence and grew into grand mal... the dilantin make me sick to my stomache, dizzy, unable to focus, so i asked to be switched to another drug... oh, i forgot the horrivle reacurring dream after that first day in the hospital IV'd 1000 mgs... so they added depakote to my meds...dream left... worse things came.. working up to 1000 mgs while i was still on dilantin... got up to 500 and was unble to function, slurred speach, could not get out of bed,was suicidal, sick, itching, plus, i was still having seizures this whole time.. the more meds the worse and more frequent they became. I insisted they get me off these meds, so i was put on a sceduale to wean off. After getting off the depakote i felt better and seizures slowed down... but was still on my dilantin... and still not at at well..anxiety, fear, crying jags. now i have been off of both drugs a few days and have horrible mouth pain. Other withdrawl symptoms have been anxiety, fear, shaking, tremors and still havinf seizures, but milder and less often..... I will be seeking other more natural ways of getting my seizures to stop.... i just don't trust these drugs. I am wondering who slse has had such a horrible experience?Read More Read Less

my mom has sever RA and now started having seizures. They think it is from lack of blood flow caused by the RA. She also said she has ringing in her ears and is drowsy. Does anyone have any feedback on this?

This is the second time I've been on Dilantin..the first time was when I got pregnant with my first child and due to lack of informaty, my child was born with a heart problem. I am back on it now, with no intention of any more children, and before this was Keppra (sucks big time!) BUT I've had extreme cases of anxiety & panic attacks, and earlier this summer I thought I was having a stroke. Thats happened to me with both Dilantin and Keppra..just loss of feeling on different sides of the body each time..greatfully it wasn't a stroke, but somehow it has to be tied to the med..its the only thing I'm taking. I'm ready for something new..or maybe just go back to phenabarotal (sp?) !!!Read More Read Less

This med did reduce my seizures however I do have the rash on my face and my gums bleed and swell horribly. It is a big problem because I knocked half my teeth out having seizures. But it does help prevent my seizures. I've been taking it for about 10 years.
