I've been on Tegretol for 18 yrs. For seizures, been seizure free for that lenght of time. After reading reviews, maybe Tegretol is what causes me to be tired alot of the time. I have trouble with memory and recalling words in conversation with people.

I was given Tegretol after having several mild seizures and after just one week of taking the drug I had my first grand mal seizure. In the space of the 2 months I was on the drug I had 4 grand mal seizures, 15 fitting seizures, 8 stiffness seizures and my absences increased to multiple times an hour. After this my neurologist changed my prescription to Keppra and after some experimenting with dos...

It was tough to adjust to the slurring of speech and making me feel like I was in slow motion and lethargy the first 2 weeks...then I adjusted and those symptoms went away. It has been very effective in treating my seizure disorder which was out of control.

Diagnosed Bipolar NOS. I take 200mg, 1/2 (100mg) twice daily which is a low dose. The only reason I gave 4 stars for ease of use is only because I have to cut tablet in half and it is fairly crumbly if you don't get it just right. I have not had any panic attacks, but still have minor very short episodes of being snappy if provoked and tearful. One minor short episode of dissociation. Nothing like I am capable of by history. I have had some unusual tiredness, minor what I call "the dropsies", mild to moderate sexual dysfunction (desire and orgasmic difficulty), a little weight gain, and moderate itching. The itching will most likely be the reason if I stop taking it. I sometimes feel like I'm having low blood sugar, and when I eat it goes away. I haven't seen this mentioned as a SE. It seems I have listed a lot of complaints but they are not bad. I would hate to have to stop tegretol because it is cheap and it works well for me. Read More Read Less

Prescribed this medication as a replacement for Gabapentin. After the slow reduction of the Gabapentin, and increase of the Tegretol, I once again experienced the severe pain in my face. My Neurologist then ordered me to take both the Gabapentin (at a reduced rate) AND the Tegretol. I have been taking both and am stil experiencing facial pain, although not to the degree that I was. My intention was to eliminate the pain and at least one of the medications. I am not pleased with the outcome.

It is now 10 years I am taking Tegretol and up to 85-90% of my facial nerve pain is under control. Having tried all the neurological medication there is this is the most effective. I needed several weeks to get used to the medication. To control dizzyness, sickness etc. I eat shortly before taking a dose. Rush and difficulties with muscle coordination I mainly have when I had to take a rather high dose. After a few years I was able to reduce the daily dose from 800 mgr to 200 mgr and that is just enough to stay "good" and it cut the rush. Indeed, symptoms like a dry mouth, a little bit too less natrium in my blood, feeling more tired then I should be based on my job and other wellknown, I have to live with. Careful use, knowledge about the medicine, a regular life are important. I am hardly taking any alcohol because that triggers the pain and the rush. And every single other prescribed and non-prescribed medicine I need to take, I have checked by the doctor or pharmacy if it might affect the function of Tegretol. Surprisingly many can affect Tegretol, even when I was taking only 100 mgr. Since I took non checked anti-biotica against a blatter infection 5 years ago, I had a severe pain break through, had to be taken to hospital for several days. After that event I am back at 200 mgr daily. Of course if I could I would do without Tegretol. But as long as there is not a better replacement, or even better, a solution for facial nerve pain I guess I have to stick to this. Read More Read Less

7/9/12-NOVARTIS has now discontinued 100 mg tegretol. Have to use them along with the 200 mg (they are still making 200 mg, so far) to get my dose of 300,350,300,350. I don't know what I'm going to do. Taking too little is dangerous, taking too much makes me so dizzy I can't walk. I know 100 mg was not a money maker for them. My pharmacy said I was their only customer. I called Novartis today and confirmed what Walgreens told me. I have family all over the country who can get it for me, out of pocket. But that will only last so long. I'm young and have alot of years left. Means I will have to find another drug---AGAIN! This happened to me when I was 18 and on a different drug that was removed. I take it to controlseizures--Im so scared. The life I have been leading since 1968 at age 11.Read More Read Less

I am on 400 mg BID for grand mal seizures combined with paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia. I was on 300 mg BID until an attempt to wean off 2 years ago. I hope to go back to that dosage this summer, as I felt more "normal" then than I do now. On this higher dose, I experience more twitching, drowsiness, and interactions with meds, caffeine, etc. I have been on Tegretol for about 20 years.
