NuvaRing gave me hormonal hot flashes, and I found it hard to take my Loestrin 24 Fe at the same time every day, so I decided to try Nexplanon. I am a 23 year old college graduate, and I am 3 weeks into my Nexplanon. Granted, it hasn't been long, but my experience so far is AMAZING. The first few months it seemed ok, I had a longer lighter period usually about 2 weeks long and bad cramping but I thought it would get better eventually. My period just kept getting longer and longer. I had it in about 9 months, and by the end I was bleeding constantly. The last few months it decided to go completely psycho and I was having bad nausia and cramping constantly. It raised my heart rate weirdly. I also had a lot of random mood swings. It also made my acne get much worse, cystic acne that I haven't gotten for probably 15 years otherwise. It also is much harder to take out than put in. It probably took them a solid 20 min of digging around in my arm to get it out and I didn't even have much scar tissue around it because it wasn't in for that long. I'm told by the people who removed it (nurses from a university clinic who deal with BC all the time) that my experience was pretty common, and only about 1/3 of women won't actually have side effects. Basically they said if one period on it is bad, the rest of them probably will be too. I switched to the patch and it's been way better.Read More Read Less

I got my Nexplanon a few days before my 18th birthday. I chose this method because the pill messed with my mental health extremely bad, and I had an allergic reaction to the patch. So I decided to go with nexplanon because it’s very effective and it lasts for 3 years. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. After I got it put in I was severely sick, I had cramps so bad that I would almost fall over ( I’m not trying to be dramatic) and I couldn’t eat. I physically could not swallow food. I was extremely nauseous and I was in so much pain that I could not do my normal daily things. I bled for a year straight. And still to do this day my periods are very irregular and when I went to my doctor about this heavy bleeding that lasted for a year and now my periods will last for months they just told me “oh that happens sometimes”. I will say that it is nice not having to remember to take a pill or anything like that, but the bleeding is what has caused me to be very irritated with this. Birth control just doesn’t work well with my body and I am so tired of this journey. Yesterday I got it taken out and a new one put in and it was very traumatic for me, my doctor did a horrible job and I felt every little thing they did. That’s obviously not the birth controls fault but still It has made me not want to go with this method ever again. I am not trying to scare any women away from this method of BC because it is different for every person, and it may work better for somebody else. I will say that it had not messed with my mental health and it has not caused any other problems that I’m aware of other than the bleeding. I also want to say make sure you have a good doctor or just go to an OBGYN. Because my experience with this certain doctor and nurse was horrifying and unprofessional and it has seriously messed me up. This birth control has a lot of pros and cons. Just make sure you do your research and make sure that this is the best option for you. But once again I wanna say, it is different for every single person!! And if you like the idea of Nexplanon than definitely try it!Read More Read Less

I got the Nexplanon implant in June of 2019. For the first year or so, I had constant spotting but other than that, there were no other side effects. It wasn’t until year 2 that things took a turn for the worse. By Nov. of 2020, my sex drive died, I experienced the worst depression of my life (w/ suicidal thoughts), god awful mood swings, and my weight gain was out of control. By Dec. 2020, I weighed almost 190 lbs, having started the implant at ~165lbs. Coming into year 3, I started to get really bad breakouts. Turns out the implant gave me hormonal acne, and I had never had acne even as a teen. I finally got it removed a week ago and my sex drive is starting to return, and I’ve already lost a couple of pounds. I’m finally starting to feel like myself again. To anyone who wants to start this form of birth control, beware. This was the worst form of birth control I have tried, even worse than the shot in my opinion.Read More Read Less

Do not recommend. Nonstop spotting for months for me and anxiety is through the roof. Can't even go on an elevator or go through a car wash without panicking. Can't wait to get this thing out. Also, acne everywhere. Back, neck, chest, and face. The number one reason people get these out is these side effects and I wish I listened more to those.

Most comments on here are very accurate to my experience. So the first year was great. Rarely got my period, no cramps, cool. Second year comes in, and my period would last almost a month and it’s not even a full period, just light spotting that never ended. Then it would stop for a week or two and then I’ll sometimes have a full on period. Extremely weird cycle. I never know when it’s coming, how long it will last, or if it’s gonna be spotty or heavy. It’s getting in the way of the sex life. I’ve also noticed a big difference with my energy. I’m always feeling fatigue for no reason at all. I have no wants to do a lot of things. I’ve also been dealing with stress and mood swings. I don’t understand why. On top of that, I recently just started getting these acne on my face and bigger pores..I’ve done nothing different from my routine.Never had these problems, my face has always been pretty clear. And my biggest problem of all is weight gain. I’ve been beating myself up but I’ve been keeping track of what I ate and it is no different from before. I looked at my photos after giving birth and I was still slender. Shortly after my nexplanon, my photos were different, I gained about 25 lbs! I didn’t change my diet. I started to better my diet and still gained almost 5 lbs. I hope to get myself back after taking this thing off!Read More Read Less

Honestly this birth control is awful I have been experiencing really bad mood swings, angry and frustration. My sex drive is so low and I have gained weight I used to be 135 and now I weigh 160 and I don’t eat bad at all. I really don’t recommend getting this birth control it’s bad for your mental health. I have the nexaplaon and I feel so low sometimes I feel like I’m not myself because of this birth control I am getting it removed it June 5th because I can not take this birth control anymore it’s awful. A lot of doctors and MA say oh it doesn’t cause this or this but yes it does! If you feel like your not yourself ladies your right because it’s the birth control not you. I’m hoping when I get this bc out that I will start feeling like myself again Read More Read Less

I got my Nexplanon insert for a few reasons: I did not want to have to remember to take the pill, I was spotting through all the pills, and because I had heard many horror stores about IUD's. I was very nervous for many reasons, mostly about the interstation process and what the effects would be on me. I read a lot of negative reviews which made me more nervous. However I was so pleasantly surprised when the insertion was painless, the recovery was nothing! And so far I have had no side effects and my spotting even stopped! I am so happy. I am a 24 yr old female who is sexually active. Would recommend to anyone. Read More Read Less

As a trans man, my gender dysphoria inhibits my day to day life. So, being pregnant is off the table for me. This implant gets rid of all that anxiety for me as it is 100% effective. HOWEVER transgender or not, it is not easy to use at all; as i have been on it since november and it is now mid may. I have been on my menstrual cycle non stop and it has caused me immense dysphoria and discomfort. Not once have I not used my menstrual cup within these 6 months. Because of my 6 month non stop cycle i get dizzy and lose my strength if I dont eat 3 meals a day. I also gain weight very quickly if I do decide to eat 3 meals a day. I gained 20lbs and am now 160 at 5'2 Everyday for the post 6 months Ive gotten the same period symptoms -bloating -cramping -horomonal mood swings -heavy flow -migraines Read More Read Less

There was difficulty with the implantation but nurses at iCash MK were very supportive and came up with a solution easily. I know birth control is meant to worsen depression, but I was numb when I first went on it, it improved my mental health, as well as the positive of not getting pregnant.

I first got the implant back in 2019 and it expired in 2022. My life has been hell in those 3 years, at one point I was on my period for about 6 months straight. I’ve spent more money on pads and tampons in those years than I’ve ever had. I would have spells where I’m on my period for 60+ days then off it for 2 days then back on it for another 30+ days. If I would’ve known that I was going to go through that, I would’ve just not been on birth control at all

I started nexplanon in 2018 until 2022 (was told it would last 5 years when I went to get it out at 3 year mark). It ruined me. I gained 30 lbs nearly immediately. The day after I got it, I had a paralyzing anxiety attack. I bled for weeks at a time. My periods were beyond unpredictable, and were super heavy. Like changing my super tampon every hour for weeks at a time. Another side affect was acne. I would have non stop cystic acne. Never got better until 4 months after I removed nexplanon. My anxiety is WAY better now that it’s gone. I lost weight within a month after getting it out (not much, but significant enough). The entire time I was on it, I was wiped out, and my body was always in some sort of pain. I will never get it back in. The only pro’s to it was I didn’t get pregnant, and I didn’t have to remember to take it. Someone needs to come up with a birth control that won’t completely screw your body up. Read More Read Less

Got this in 2017, and I no longer will be using this. I put up with the side effects for so long because it’s been so easy to use. After having clumps of my hair falling out in the shower (ruined my thick luscious hair), bleeding for weeks, having severe mood swings, feeling depressed, deep cystic acne and having jaw soreness/pain I’m not planning on ever using this again. Switching to copper IUD.

Been on Nexplanon since June 2021, I've had a fairly good experience as I'm used to having a regular cycle but am now only rarely ever getting my period. My only complaint would be the increase amount of pain when it comes to cramps, usually it was bearable but it honestly sometimes feels like I'm being stabbed. So other than that, No complaints.

I have had nexplanon for since Jan 2020. In the last 10 years I've used the shot, the pill (which I became pregnant on due to failure to use appropriately), and after my daughter IUD which my body eventually rejected. Biggest side effect first year, I wouldn't get a period for about 6 weeks. Then 2 weeks of irregular bleeding. After 2 years it seems my bleeding has almost stopped. I was down 15 lbs in 2021. Over winter 2022, I gained appx 5 lbs a week until I put on an additional 20 lbs. I'm not totally sure if it's because of the nexplanon or my personal habits, but I have never gained weight so quickly before. Still undecided if I will keep this birth control or get it removed.Read More Read Less

Getting nexplanon was a nightmare for me! I got into a deep depression, had suicidal thoughts, and cried 2-3 times per day. I didn’t connect it to the nexplanon until reading about other’s experiences. I spotted daily and had to either wear period panties or tampons daily, had stomach cramps a lot, and a 32 day migraine. I also got high cholesterol on it and I’ve never had that in my life! Since starting it, any smell like perfume or air fresheners give me migraines and make me sick. I can’t go near anyone with perfume on or in a bathroom with air fresheners. Before it I would light candles daily and had air fresheners in every room in my house. I had it removed a week ago. Save yourself all these side effects and don’t do it!!Read More Read Less

I was on Nexplanon after a miscarriage from blood poisoning. After waiting a cycle to have intercourse, I felt sick a few weeks after. My friends said to take a test but there was no way. I took one anyway and found out I was pregnant. I'm putting 3 stars of effectiveness because I did get pregnant on it, but had it not been for the progesterone released, the cells of my now 5 year old girl wouldn't have stayed together and I wouldn't have her.
