NuvaRing gave me hormonal hot flashes, and I found it hard to take my Loestrin 24 Fe at the same time every day, so I decided to try Nexplanon. I am a 23 year old college graduate, and I am 3 weeks into my Nexplanon. Granted, it hasn't been long, but my experience so far is AMAZING. I am 35 and I got the nexplanon Oct 2021 after I had my daughter. I was 190 when I first got it and now I’m 163. I’m happy about the weight loss but the bleeding is now unbearable. First year was the bomb I had absolutely no periods. beginning of the second year I started light spotting which was ok no cramps or anything. Now I’m almost midway into the second year I’ve had 4 full periods in less than 2 months and they are HEAVY it feels like water coming out. I changed my pad and it looked like blood and water mixed which is weird. If I pee blood is in the toilet. I’ve had a few clots but not many the cramps are normal like they were before. I’m married and it’s hard because we may be able to have sex one day but by that night cycle back on. Want to remove it because of the bleeding but our last kids were back to back. I had this implant for 2 years. The first year was fine. I would have a very light period every 2-3 months. I felt normal. By year 2, periods became more frequent though always light. I would skip a month and then have a period that would last for 2-3 weeks though still light but annoying. I also could not keep weight on. I was down to 105 lbs at one point for my 5’ 7” frame. I felt like I was on drugs; I was constantly jittery and anxious. I finally got it removed and it took about 3 months before I felt normal again and started to gain weight back. I originally chose this method because after my daughter was born I started having a specific type of migraine which made it dangerous to take any form of pill birth control that contained estrogen. My options were either an IUD or Nexplanon. Like all birth controls, an individuals experience can vary greatly. I won’t say don’t try it; just be prepared for negative possibilities. The removal was fine and my doctor let me know up front, the option to remove would be there if I was not happy with it.Read More Read Less

I’ve had the Nexplanon implant for just over a year now and it started out fantastic but my periods are so irregular on it. I’ll spot for a month and then nothing for a week and then a full on period. I have no cramps or anything which is nice but I think I’m gonna get it taken out. I’ve been on birth control for 5 years straight, it’s time I know who the real me is!

I got nexplanon back in June 2018. My overall experience is good. I occasionally get my period once every 6 months. It usually lasts for about a week and a half. Very heavy flow then it stops abruptly. Cramps are about the same without nexplanon. Pretty painful but it goes away when my period ends. I have no desire for sex to be honest. I do have a partner who I am intimate with and haven't gotten pregnant. So that's the upside. Another thing I noticed is my acne isn't as bad. I used to have very bad cystic acne. I only get bad flare ups when my period is going to start. I have gained tremendous amount of weight. I'm not sure due to nexplanon or if it's my diet and lack of exercise. It's probably due to both. When i first started on nexplanon I was about 180 now I am up to 230. One last thing I have noticed is my mood. I've gotten really bad anxiety and depression. I have no energy to go out and be active. My nexplanon removal date is coming up June 2023. It was supposed to be for 3 years but for some reason my medical provider put down June 2023. Anyway it's done its job but I think it's time to get it removed so I can actually get back to how i was mentally and physically. Read More Read Less

horrible side effects. i had it for a year. the first six months were magical, so beware bc it’s misleading. the last six months were hell. i gained 35 pounds within six months even though i did high intensity workouts every single week day. i had cystic acne all over my face like i have NEVER had. i never even struggled with acne before. my appetite was all over the place. my mood swings were inside, i cried all the time. i also was on my period for 6 months straight. just beware. everybody i personally know that has gotten this had the same type of experience. great at first, then ends up HORRIBLE. good luck to those who try it!! after trying many, many forms of birth control…. this was the worst. the fact that’s it’s so effective doesn’t even matter to me anymore! based on every form of birth control i’ve tried…. the simple pill and the patch seem to be the safest bet.Read More Read Less

BEWARE!! DO NOT RECOMMEND!! I’ve had the Nexplanon implant for just over a year now. Out of control periods, like I mean 40 day periods with maybe a day or two in between periods. And extremely heavy bleeding for the whole thing. I’m using the highest absorbency tampons and have to wear diapers. Had to go for an emergency iron infusion because I had lost so much blood that my iron levels were so low I was having cardiac failure. I have crazy mood swings… like I mean crazy! I want to rage and punch things and curl up in a bawl and cry all at the same time… randomly for no reason. I’ve also put on about 40lbs since getting the nexplanon! Also!! It’s so effective because you’re literally always on your period, you can’t have sex unless you want your bed, partner, room, or wherever you decided to get freaky to look like a murder scene… The easiest part of it is getting it put in… was no issues and super easy. I how ever am counting down the days until my appointment to get it taken out. Please please please take this review into consideration before deciding on the implant! Read More Read Less

I had Nexplanon for 13 months and for the first 11 months it was great. My periods were way lighter and sometimes disappeared altogether. But the last 2 months, I had very heavy, irregular periods that lasted a long time and basically were back-to-back with just a couple days in between. That was frustrating. Also, I gained 15 pounds in a year despite increasing my workouts and watching my diet — it doesn’t make sense except for the hormones. So I had it taken out. Loved how effective it was and that I didn’t have to remember to take a pill, but the hormones were not for me.Read More Read Less

Pros: Extreamly effective None invasive None painful No acne issues No weight gain Cons: Irregular bleeding Ovarian cycts So far it's the best birth control I've ever had (2 years in). I have been on at least 5 different pills, the patch, and 2 IUDs that left me with permanent damage. Nexplanon is the least invasive, easiest, no fus birth control and I love it 95% of the time. My cons are the bleeding. I don't bleed a lot but it's always irradic. It is more of an annoyance, and a little more money spent on panties. My big issue is sever cramps that hurt from mid stomach down to my butthole. I've been on Nexplanon for 2 years and this started about 6 months ago. I thought my appendix ruptured I was in so much pain. My husband was about to take me to the emergency room. These cramps come sporadically and after some research it sounds like I have Ovarian cysts which is a side effect. I know that sounds terrible, and it is, but it's still the best one I've ever had. ?????Read More Read Less

Decided to write a review because I've had a good experience and people usually write reviews for bad experiences I would say. Of course it is a very effective birth control, I've been on nexplanon for around 3 years now. The process of getting it put in was not painful at all, the numbing shot was the worst part of it but compared to an iud I don't think it was bad. I did have a good amount of bleeding and some side effects within the first few months, but at this point I have nothing noticeable other than a mild drop in my sex drive. At this point I get my period semi irregularly, but I do still get a period somewhere between once a month to once every three months (and very occasionally twice in a month or extended spotting) overall very good birth control and so much better than the pill.Read More Read Less

Got my Nexplanon inserted May 4, 2022. The insertion was fine, bruised a little bit, and tender in the arm for like a day or two. But on October 11th comes around, and I end up having a 3 week long period. It ends and now a month later I have a period again but it's way heavier and the cramps are way worse than I have ever experienced. The doctor, who put it in, her earliest appointment is January 3rd 2023, so I took it, so I can get it out and go back to my old birth control where I had no problems before.Read More Read Less

I was on the shot before this for years, probably around 6 or more years and it worked perfectly for me. One day I went to get my next shot and my doctor suggested Nexplanon. I was nervous. Mainly about the insertion, but she assured me it was an easy process, and it was. I had it inserted in August of 2022. Easy insertion, still no period, and my mood is the same. My only complaint is breast tenderness. My breast have gotten larger within the past 3 weeks and have been very tender. It is now Mid November 2022, so I’m trying to wait it out to see if the tenderness goes away. Overall, I’m pretty happy with this form of birth control. Read More Read Less

I know everyone has different experiences. Here is mine. For reference I am 26 years old, 5’8, and 210 lbs if that matters. I had Nexplanon inserted in April 2022. I am currently 7 months in and will be having it removed next week. The only pro has been me not getting pregnant or even remotely having a scare. The cons are strong side effects that are not worth it for ME to continue. For starters, the insertion was smooth. Only mild tenderness and a bruise that was all but forgotten by the next day. I was already pre-warned about the potential of excessive bleeding for a few months as my body adjusted, and that was okay at first. However, 7 months in and my periods went from lasting only 4 days to 12-17 days straight. It’s like as soon as my period finally ends, I get a few days of peace before it starts right back up. Another issue I’ve had was bleeding during intercoarse. No pain, but light bleeding every time. I went to my gyno for testing, and everything was perfectly normal. So I cannot say for sure if this is related to the implant, but I’ve NEVER had that happen before insertion. Yet now it’s every single time. Kind of sucks the fun out of it. Those two are huge inconveniences, but by far the worse side effect I’ve had was mental/emotional. Ever since insertion, my mood swings have been off the charts and I’ve battled this sudden depression I haven’t experienced beforehand. It’s gotten so bad that it’s affecting my personal and work life. It took a while for me to link the two together, but that was the tipping point of me deciding on removal. I’ve had more breakdowns these last few months than I’ve had my entire life, and they come out of nowhere. Quite frightening. Read More Read Less

The onsertion went fine. Just had bruising for 2 weeks and itching for a few days, then suddenly i started suffering tingling and arm pain in my arm which would come and go daily and if i moved my arm a certain way, it would hurt. After 2 months, i had it removed as could not take the pain anymore.

I got this to help with heavy periods. I gave it six months and thankfully got it removed today. My periods lasted weeks on end (my Dr had to call in meds to stop the bleeding) I am anemic now due to all the blood loss, exhausted, headaches, moody and wouldn’t recommend nexplanon. I would go back to an IUD.

I have been on the pill and I have also used nuvarings in the past. I kept forgetting to take the pill or to refill my prescription for nuvarings so I wanted something more permanent but I was too scared to get an IUD after hearing painful stories. I have had it for about 7 months now and it has been great. I do sometimes randomly bleed for a few weeks at a time, but its not a big deal for me or my fiancé as he does not mind blood so thankfully it does not affect our sex life (sorry if TMI, just being honest). My Fiancé does not wear a condom anymore and finishes inside me pretty much every time and it has been extremely effective. I am super happy with how effective it is. I have not noticed any weight gain problems or any other terrible side effects other than being a bit more moody, but that's pretty normal with birth control. Overall, I would recommend it because its low maintenance, does not hurt at all during insertion and its extremely effective. Read More Read Less

This was my first ever birth control when I was 15 I got it inserted. I absolutely LOVED mine, and also got family members and friends to get this type of birth control as well that they love it too. I didnt experience any type of weight gain, had no periods for the full first 2 years, no negative side effects at all. Coming up on the 3rd year of having it and first loosing my virginity I began to bleed every other week, so I decided to change methods and try the IUD and it absolutely wrecked me. I had the worst cramps, horrible depression, and just was an absolute no for me. I got it out after a year and decided to get on the pill, but I continuously forget to take it, therefore I just made an appointment to get another nexplanon inserted and I cannot wait!Read More Read Less
