NuvaRing gave me hormonal hot flashes, and I found it hard to take my Loestrin 24 Fe at the same time every day, so I decided to try Nexplanon. I am a 23 year old college graduate, and I am 3 weeks into my Nexplanon. Granted, it hasn't been long, but my experience so far is AMAZING. Nexplanon is by far the worst birth control ever made! I got it inserted in January 2022. The excess bleeding was unbearable. I bled for what seemed like three weeks. I called my doctor, and they put me on birth control pills to help regulate the bleeding. Sometimes that helped and sometimes it didn’t. Had I known they were going to prescribe the pill, I would have just opted for the pill. What sense does it make for me to put all of those hormones in my body. I finally got Nexplanon removed because it has been hell on my life. It definitely works as birth control, not in the way intended, but because you bleed all of the time, you’re not going to want to have sex! I’m still dealing with bleeding a week after removal. Doctors need to be better informed about this implant, and mentally prepare patients for the common side effects when getting it placed and when removing it. Read More Read Less

I have been unlucky in many respects health wise, but trying nexplanon was a welcome exception. I have no negative side effects, I was able to avoid taking antianxiety meds because this stabilized my moods, I don't have a period at all anymore, and my boobs have gotten bigger! This birth control has been a blessing for me. My periods were becoming more annoying with age due to other health issues and now I'm not bothered in the slightest. I know everyone's experience with birth control is different but I just want to share how happy I am with my nexplanon. Please don't be afraid to try it if you think it will benefit you. I was nervous for no reason at all!Read More Read Less

22/F I’ve been on Nexplanon for 3 months now. Insertion was okay, I was bruised for a week and now I just have a tiny scar at the insertion. 1st month of side effects were horrible. Mood swings, acne around my jawline, headaches, tummy pain and nausea - also my period (light bleeding) lasted for 12 days. I’ve stopped having periods since and side effects have eased. My experience with it now is pretty good, some days I have tender breast and I’m just more emotional but I guess this where self-care really helps. I definitely became more clingy to my boyfriend and I don’t lack sex drive either. My vaginal discharge is actually normal, maybe more creamier and couple occasions I’ve had thick clumps but I did expect that since it said it will thicken your discharge. !!! Worst issue I am dealing with right now is my cravings, I have an appetite of pregnant woman and have put on loads of weight. (in 3 months 6 kg) Started to have cellulite on the back of my thighs… I’ve always been skinny, and now I have so much excess fat especially on my belly so tbh I’m kinda in panic mode. Still better than having a child so I’ll just stick to a diet and some exercise haha. Anyways I’ll see if my side effects will change later on but if not then I think I will stick to this method of birth control :)Read More Read Less

I have had the implant for almost 10months now & I am getting it removed in 13 days YAY!! I've had heavy bleeding on average 21-25days a month with 10-14days of no bleeding before it starts all over again. I have been miserable! Cramps, headaches, fatigue, depressed, dryness when not bleeding- overall horrible. Cant wait to get this out of me!

I am very happy with my decision of getting the Nexplanon implant. I had it for 3 years and just I got the second inserted. I lost my period for the first 6 months and then it went back to normal. I recommend it 100%. The insertion is very easy and you only feel when the numbing injection is applied.

I got my nextplanon in September of 2020, my first period after getting it lasted 10 days (this is unusual for me) after that I had no periods at all, no spotting, nothing. I did experience some heightend emotional states and from October -December of 2020 I noticed this happened during the time of the month when my period should have started. Before getting nexplanon, I had been working on losing weight and had lost 35 lbs. After getting nexplanon my weight loss seemed to stop. When I went to the Dr., I noticed my blood pressure was higher than normal, and I was concerned. I started paying more attention to my blood pressure, which was hanging around in the 133/92 range. I also just seemed to gain weight no matter what I did, in fact, I gained 70lbs in a year and a half. I was freaking out, so I tightened up my diet and made sure to exercise every day, after 3months this resulted in a 10-pound weight loss. I started researching nexplanon and the estrogel hormone. I found a study where 2% of the women followed were just like me. I also found a site where a woman wrote about her weight gain and then weight loss after the removal of nextplanon even though she did not make any lifestyle changes. I just got my implant removed yesterday August 30th, 2022. Today I have been extremely tired and my blood pressure is at 97/80. I will keep monitoring my BP and weight over the next 8 weeks.Read More Read Less

Before Nexplanon, I was on the Mirena IUD. Nexplanon was a lot easier and a lot less painful than IUD to insert. When I first got on, I was soooo dry. I barely had any discharge as well and I have a regular discharge. Sex was so uncomfortable because I was so dry. I had my period for a couple days and it was very light. (When I was on IUD I had no period at all.) However fast forward, my vagina is not longer dry it is back to normal but my period is lasting most of the month! When it first comes on, it is like a regular period then by the 3rd day it’s like spotting. Then it’s spotting on and off for 3-4 weeks. However one month, I didn’t get my period at all. I did gain over 15 pounds on this birth control but I’m actually happy with the weight. I also always experienced non stop UTI’s and BV with the IUD. As well as random bad cramps and contractions. I don’t experience that at all on Nexplanon. The only con I really have is the non stop bleeding!!!Read More Read Less

I had the implant as i forget to take tablets. The 1st two months I had a period then no period for 4 months which was fantastic. For the last 9 months I had irregular periods that lasted from 2-6 weeks, low mood and severe cramps. It might work for you but it didn't work for me. Ensure you research the implant and consider the side effects.

Overall, my cycle was irregular. My periods ranged from 4 -12 days, with an average of 9 days. In the second and third years, it became heavier and longer 10+ days. No other side effects.

My teenage daughter evaluated all the birth-control options. Nexplanon was presented by a Kaiser doctor as effective, without many side effects (no mention of skin issues despite my teen daughter's history of mild acne), and easy to use, so she got the Nexplanon implant. At the end of two months, her acne was intolerable. She decided to have Nexplanon implant removed. She switched to the pill and we're hoping the acne clears up soon, but still dealing with it, hyper pigmentation, and worries of scarring. I WOULD NOT recommend this to any teenage girl. It's taking a toll mentally and emotionally. Complained to our Kaiser doctor and she said ...well, most teenagers get acne and it can get worse on Nexplanon. Wish the Kaiser doctor would have told us this when she was evaluating birth control options. This has been a very expensive and awful experience. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT recommend Nexplanon to any teenage girl.Read More Read Less

I’ve been reading most reviews trying to make sure no one has gotten pregnant off of this birth control and so far so good. I know there’s a possibility, especially since my body could adjust to the dosage of hormones it releases, but maybe I’m confusing the whole science behind this birth control. Now the side effects are very hazardous not to mention the weight gain many of you have experienced but the main focus of this birth control is to AVOID PREGNANCY. I’ve recently changed my implant and my sex drive isn’t that high up until I met someone who made me “wet” (if you what I mean). Not to mention yes I am dry sometimes but LUBE is amazing. Maybe this form of birth control isn’t for everyone and I can see why, but my main question is “how effective is it?” And it seems to work pretty well for me given the fact that this guy finishes inside of me all the time.(TMI) I hope I don’t jinx it ?? but just sharing my experience with you guys. Hopes this relaxes your mind a bit if your reading through the comments like I was trying to make sure no one’s gotten pregnant off of this:) Read More Read Less

I’ve had this for three years. My first year was amazing I don’t think I bled at all and had no side affects. Second year I would start spotting and then I had no sex drive and was always dry (sorry tmi). Third year has been the worst. I bled for two months straight heavy. Gained like 15 pounds and have been depressed in a way I have never experienced before. Unable to even get out of bed or find any joy or motivation to do anything. Like the feeling that I was basically failing at life and I’m worthless. Horrible feeling and thoughts. Huge struggle. I finally put my foot down and got it removed today. I just miss the bubbly and go getter type of person I was. I would definitely look for other alternatives. I’m just giving my body a break and going for abstinence. Work on myself and hopefully heal the mental problems I have dealt with. Whatever choice you make is yours. But I don’t wish the side affects on anyone. Especially the depression I felt like I was crazy. Be kind to yourself and be safe. Read More Read Less

Bleeding, bleeding, bleeding. Most of the month and like a heavy period nonstop. The tampons, they do nothing. "You might have breakthrough bleeding" my doctor said. Good one doc! Haven't gotten pregnant so that's a plus, but I would rather go back to the pill I have to remember every day where I had no period at all. I no longer need birth control though and can't wait to get this thing out.

Easy to put in, impossible to find a doctor that would remove it. I was never warned of the possible depression side effects, even though the doctor who put it in knew my history with depression and even though I had explicitly asked about possible side effects. It made me incredibly suicidal to the point where I lost scholarships, had to withdraw from a full ride at a top law school, and almost killed myself. After calling every doctor in the area, I could not a single one who knew how to remove the implant. I finally went to an ER and had to scream at them like a madwoman and outright refuse to leave the building until they found someone several hours later who would remove it. My depression levels have since returned to normal.Read More Read Less

I got the Nexplanon 6 weeks after having my son. At the time I was down to my pre-pregnancy weight of 135lbs and feeling great. I had my period of about 6 months after getting the implant. After it finally stopped, I began having my period regularly but it was very heavy and lasting about 10 days each month. I had no other side effects that I knew of. I had it for 3 years and then got it replaced with a second one. Still at my weight of 135lbs when I got the second one placed. I started gaining weight rapidly, I always felt "off", always had a headache, never felt good. My vision worsened, I was getting to the point where driving at night was a struggle. I got the implant again replaced after another 3 years. Finally, a week ago, after 9 years on Nexplanon, I got it removed. My weight is 233lbs, 100lbs up from when I started Nexplanon. This past week, my blurry vision has subsided, I have energy, I feel happy, I feel good! No more headaches, I can see perfectly fine driving at night. So many things I have suffered over the last 9 years that I did not realize were attributed to the Nexplanon. I would not recommend this birth control to anyone. It took 9 years of my life, 9 years of my son's life with me. I was miserable but had no idea it was due to Nexplanon, my doctor didn't tell me any of this. Didn't even question the Nexplanon being the root of all my issues. Red bumps on my arms and legs (Keratosis Pilaris), been there for over 6 years, I tried every cream and treatment out there and had given up, they are now gone just one week after having Nexplanon removed. Nexplanon is poison. Its convenience and effectiveness is not worth the torture it puts you through. Read More Read Less

The procedure to get this put in was a little painful when they give you a numbing shot (it burns in the specific area for a couple minutes but then it’s ok afterward) but the side effects ultimately made me take it out after one year. It worked as intended but I gained 20 pounds in a single year with no other changes to my diet and by the end of the first year, I was bleeding every single day of the month and also got worse acne. I ended up switching to an IUD although that has its own side effects like ongoing cramps.Read More Read Less

I've only been on Nexplanon for 3 weeks, and I'm scheduled to have it taken out tomorrow. Getting it put in was fine and easy, no complications, but the mental toll has been detrimental to me. Apparently depression is a fairly rare side effect (Google reported only about 7% of people get it) but after investigating my experience I found hundreds of reviews that say otherwise. After only a few days of having it in I began to get mood swings, and then spiraled into some of the worst full-on depression and apathy I've ever had. I didn't even want to get through the day, I had no motivation, and I even thought I was falling out of love with my wonderful boyfriend of 2 years because I was so apathetic and unhappy. I'm sure it works at preventing pregnancy, but this wasn't worth it at all. It was actual torture and the thing causing me distress was stuck inside my body. Besides, I was too apathetic and unhappy to have any libido during this time regardless. I didn't have intercourse of any kind the entire time. Do not recommend. Read More Read Less
