NuvaRing gave me hormonal hot flashes, and I found it hard to take my Loestrin 24 Fe at the same time every day, so I decided to try Nexplanon. I am a 23 year old college graduate, and I am 3 weeks into my Nexplanon. Granted, it hasn't been long, but my experience so far is AMAZING. Ladies, I want to make sure all of you know that birth control works differently with every woman, and most reviews ...

A lot of people review drugs when they cause bad side effects, so Nexplanon gets a bad reputation for being difficult. Since going on Nexplanon, my periods come for maybe 3 days every month and they are so light I barely need a tampon. I don't have any cramps, acne, or weight gain. Sometimes on the period I will have a bad headache, but Advil takes care of that and then I'm fine until the next month. I would totally recommend this implant! The insertion is a piece of cake, it feels like getting a flu shot. Overall, it's so easy that it's worth giving a try! You can get it removed at any time.Read More Read Less

I chose this after giving birth. I was not made aware of the side effects by my obgyn. I was noticeably different in mood and overwhelmed with anxietymost all the time. At my 1.5year mark with the implant I began having extreme bone and joint pain in my wrist, so much that initially I thought I fractured my arm. Now just 6months later both wrists hurt daily. I can barely pick my daughter up anymore, the pain is constant. I rarely bleed only spot. No sex drive at all, extremely intense migraines, hair loss, weight gain, ACNE, high blood pressure, depression, and it goes on and on. Everyones body is different so the side effects will vary, but in my opinion if you have crazy bad premenstrual symptoms this is NOT for you. Educate yourself on what you're putting in your body and what to expect. The doctors are salesmen pushing products so know what you're buying. I unfortunately haven't the money it cost to remove my nexaplon $175 or it would be gone already. I've thought of removing it myself because I don't want to live like this anymore. I hate the way I feel react and think anymore. I just want to be Me again. I often wonder if other feel the same way. I just want it out for the sake of my mental health and well-being.Read More Read Less

Looking at these reviews from other women, I am positive I am not going crazy. I had been on the Nexplanon since July of 2015. I recently had it removed due to all of the side effects. It started out great for me the first couple months. After about 2 1/2 months of having it inserted I started feeling different. I started having mood swings, feeling like I was having anxiety attacks, my face started to break out more, and I was having dizziness throughout the day. Not to mention the weird irregular periods. There were times that I would also get so sad and depressed and cry for no reason. After pondering about what was going on I came to the conclusion that it had to be this new birth control. I'm a 24 year old completely healthy woman. I've never had these problems before in the past. It was interfering with my everyday life. I work in the healthcare field and I deal with patients on a daily. I'm not here to say that the Nexplanon is an awful birth control method because there's different strokes for different folks. My sister in law is actually doing great on it and she's been having it going on 3 years now. Every womens body is different and this method just did not work for me. I do recommend that as women we have to do our research before trying new things because our bodies already go through so much. I will be the first to confess that if I had read all these reviews back in July, I probably would've saved myself a trip down this road but then again this is one of those scenarios where you never know how your body will react unless you try it. Just thought I would share my experience for the next young lady wanting to experience a new method of birth control.Read More Read Less

I was afraid to try this because of all the negative reviews but I went with it anyway and I'm so glad I did! The insertion was over before I knew it, and the needle they used was actually smaller than the needle used to donate blood. I was mostly afraid of bleeding a lot but I've been on it for awhile and had 2 normal periods and was supposed to have a period last week but it never came! Here's to hoping this keeps up I don't have to deal with periods for the next three years! Definitely consider Nexplanon--not all experiences with this drug are bad! Read More Read Less

On October 30, 2012 I had the Nexplanon(birth control implant) inserted in my arm. I slowly started to get really bad migraines then 2 weeks who I started to get tingling feeling thought my body and blurry vision (do to the migraines) . I contacted my primary care doctor and she put me on migraine medicine and suggested I take out the implant she feels that it was to many hormones in my body. I made a appointment at the OBGYN for the removal and one of the nurses said more and more young girls are getting them removed do to really bad migraines from to many hormones. When I was in the room for the removal they give you a shot to numb the area. Then they make a little cut, tried to find the implant. The PA had a hard time finding it kept moving and it behind muscle and fat. She had to have help from another PA that was in the room watching. With both of them tag teamed they finally found it and pulled it out. It was a extremely painful process!! In just 6 months i gained 15 pounds with Nexplanon Before considering Nexplanon contact your doctor about other forms of birth control. Read More Read Less

WEll it is very effective in not getting pregnant because you cant have sex with all the bleeding, or have your significate other find you attractive because your head hurts, you are grumpy, depressed, and crazy. The first month didn't seem that bad, just a long period but then i started bleeding a lot more, gradually becoming heavier and I started bruising all over from the loss of too much blood( but I have been anemic before too) I was unaware of all the side effects and have had bleeding issues with most other birth control methods, but I became every depressed, temperamental, and impatient. I would not recommend it and from researching it more now, it seems a LOT of women suffer from depression and mood swings. I did not gain weight except my breasts got a little bigger (only good thing) be very cautious when using this method if you get it. Read More Read Less

I had the Nexplanon put in on a Friday because the NP was unable to insert a new Mirena. I was told that a different and better type of progesterone was use in this than is in the Mirena and there were very minimal side effects. That evening I felt extremely fatigued and the feeling carried through the weekend along feeling very emotional. Mid-morning on Monday, I found myself feeling very short of breath followed by chest pains, shakiness, a low grade fever, achy back and chest, hard time swallowing and spurts of being lightheaded. I was terrified! I got into my PCP immediately where, along with the normal oxygen level and blood pressure check, I was given an EKG. All normal. I was told they believe this could be from the hormones from the Nexplanon. These issues began to subside by the evening but I still did not feel well. The next morning, I still felt shaky and my chest was heavy. I was very tired and emotional. I started doing some research and found that so many other women have had the same side effects. I called my OB/GYN to get in and have it removed that afternoon. She was able to get a smaller IUD in, the Skyla, and successfully removed the Nexplanon. By the time I left my appointment, I felt AMAZING! My chest pressure, body aches and shakiness were gone within 12 hours. Nexplanon may work for others but not for me. Please be aware that the side effects the Nexplanon site itself lists are not a reflection of what patients have experienced, based on reviews. Read More Read Less

I thought it would be best to write a positive review, since people only write reviews when they have a problem. The insertion was relatively painless and it only took 15 minutes. I wanted the Nexplanon over an IUD because I liked having the option to feel it rather than blindly having it up inside me. It’s not been very long, but I’ve had no irregular bleeding, my skin is clear, and I had hardly any bruising. It’s been awesome.

In terms of preventing pregnancy, Nexplanon was very effective. I chose to try Nexplanon because I can't use birth control that contains estrogen and I'm also generally bad at remembering to take the pill. Seemed like a wonderful idea. The first four months I had no issues, but around the fifth month after getting the implant, I began to have symptoms of severe depression. I didn't even think about the implant being a cause and thought I was just naturally experiencing depression like many other people, so I started taking meds for depression. Around the 8th month after getting the implant, I started gaining weight - really fast. Month 10 and have gained 35 lbs (in ONLY TWO MONTHS). I would consider weight gain as a symptom of my depression or depressions meds, except I stopped taking the meds around month 7 and during depressive episodes I actually lose appetite and eat less than normal for weeks at a time. I exercise daily and eat extremely well, but weight wouldn't budge and recently started increasing again. Last month I started experiencing chronic nausea and diarrhea. Miserably nauseous 75% of the day and started having to take promethazine to help alleviate the nausea enough for me to sleep. I finally got it taken out yesterday and am very hopeful things change soon. Weight gain hasn't helped with depression as I'm now super self conscious of my weight and nausea and diarrhea were debilitating. I haven't been nauseous yet since the removal which seems to be a good sign. Overall, effective in preventing pregnancy but absolutely not worth the side effects. Read More Read Less

I was very hesitant to get the Nexplanon after reading so many negative reviews online. I went ahead and got the implant and I am SO glad I did. In the beginning I had the typical mood changes, temporary increased appetite and 2 weeks after the insertion I had a light period that lasted about a week. After that I haven't had any issues other than a couple days of light spotting and a few zits here and there, but lets be honest, you are always going to have some type of reaction to birth control so I'll take this!!! Plus, I dont have a period! YAY! The insertion was painless and fast. I love easy birth control and this gizmo is perfect for someone like me. :)Read More Read Less

I had the Nexplanon implant in for a little over 2 years. The first year, I was nursing my youngest, so I actually did not have a period at all. However, it basically put me through menopause. I had such severe vaginal dryness and extreme pain during intercourse that I had to go on an estrogen cream and my husband and I could not really have sex. Once I stopped nursing, the painful intercourse went away, and the periods started. The amount of bleeding I experienced each month made me feel as if I was dying. My typical cycle was 3 weeks of intense, heavy bleeding, then a 2 week reprieve; then right back into the bleeding. This was an extremely horrible experience, but it wasn't until around a year and a half in that I started experiencing extreme mood fluctuations and depression along with debilitating headaches. After CT scans, and many doctor's visits, I asked the doctor if it could be the birth control causing all of these ailments and they basically laughed at me. That is when I decided to research the side effects and found that 10% of women experience migraines or severe headaches while using Nexplanon. It was at this point that I decided enough was enough and requested to have it removed. Unfortunately the wait list to get it removed was almost 3 months. This was the longest 3 months of my life. All symptoms went away within 2 weeks of having the implant removed. I can say that it is effective as a form of birth control, as I did not get pregnant while using it, and I ended up getting pregnant (not trying) within 4 months of having it removed. I hope this birth control works for some, but I did not do well on it. I hope this helps.Read More Read Less

It does its job as a contraceptive and I was confident in its ability to prevent pregnancy; however, if I had known the full extent of the hell that I would go through after getting it inserted, I would've stuck with bc pills and condoms. Since getting nexplanon, I have had 3 week long periods with 2 week breaks in between, severe cramps, frequent headaches, severe mood swings, depression, rapid weight gain, horribly disgusting acne when I had NEVER had acne before in my life, multiple yeast infections, my sex drive is almost non-existant, and I get increasingly irritable by the day. at this point, I hate the person that nexplanon has made me become and I would've rather had a child than gone through this hell. please do yourself a favor and do NOT get this drug.Read More Read Less

I seriously HATE the nexplanon. I hope that me writing this review will steer women away from this option. This is a little stick we put in our bodies that just randomly pumps synthetic chemicals in us. We are made to believe that this is safe?!?! I got the implant in Oct 2013 and at first I loved it. No spotting, no weight gain, no mood swings, no nothing it was amazing. Well this past December is when the nightmare began. I woke up had started my period but there was just something off I felt like an alien. My anxiety was just so severe any bad thing I thought about I would obsess over and this in return would just depress me. That period lasted for a MONTH! There was something off. I stopped having an appetite and sleeping. I was just in a complete panic all of the time. Well this period eventually ended but another one started up a week later and the symptoms magnified by ten they were debilitating. And this is when I knew it was the implant. I had called my gynecologist a month before this to get it out but they didnt have any openings for weeks. Well after 3 days of being an emotional zombie crying all day every day and barely being able to take care of my two year old son I called planned parenthood and BEGGED them to take it out that day. I'm 15 days post nexplanon and I feel so much better like I'm living my life again. Every day is a better day. My sleeping and appetite are still not 100% and sometimes I find the anxiety to act up. I had found a website that said there is a steroid in the synthetic progesterone in the implant. I'm not sure if that is true but it would make sense. Some people have good experiences on these but it seems that I have read more bad reviews then good ones. I will never use hormonal birth control again because of this!! Women are only fertile 6 days out of every month.. why should we have to pump our bodies full of this fake stuff :( Read More Read Less

I'm different because this interacted with my depression meds and made me relapse horribly, but other than that it worked perfectly. My periods were gone as was the cramping.

Got this put in in Feb 2014 so I am just approaching 2 out of the 3 years. I had crazy mood swings and headaches for the first 2 weeks with it, after that I was totally fine. I get my periods every 6 weeks or so, but they do last a couple of days longer than they used to, maybe 7-8 instead of 5-6. I have not experienced any weight gain hair loss or acne. My only side effect has been headaches which I have always been prone to, not sure how much is the BC's fault. I love this thing, and have never had a pregnancy scare at all. The only downside is being unsure of when your periods will come, its hard to track, and definitely causes me some anxiety if I skip one even though its normal...cant help but to think "what-if" lol!Read More Read Less

I have had the Nexplanon implant for 2 years, and because of the terrible side-effects I am having it removed. My mood swings have turned me into a crazy person - I go from irrational rage to uncontrollable sadness within minutes. My bleeding is random, unpredictable and can last for weeks. I have zero sex drive, and increased acne. For a long time I thought all of this was either unrelated or worthwhile for the convenience of the implant, but I am done. I have zero chance of getting pregnant, mostly because this implant makes me an angry, bleeding, acne-ridden monster with no interest in sex and no confidence to be sexy. I would recommend giving the implant a chance because it is easy and effective, but if it doesn't work out after a few months, give up - do not wait as long as I did! It's not worth it.
