I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 22. After trying a few drugs with hideous effects that worsened my condition, by doctor recommended this. I have used it now for 4 years and it has saved my life. This drug can be used to treat manic depression, though it is not widely prescribed for the condition. If you are suffering or know someone suffering from this condition, please recommend ...
The drowsiness caused by this medication caused me to get into an accident. This drug should be banned.

It turns out that while this medicine was effective for my bipolar mood swings, I am allergic to it. BAD hives, headaches, sore throat. I am waiting for my doc to call me back and put me back on Abilify (switched because Abilify is SO expensive)...

I had a tumor removed from my spine and had horrible nerve pain. Neurontin helped but caused my legs to swell so they put me on Trileptil instead. It works (boy was i scared it wouldn't!) but it did. I'm having some swelling again but it could be because of a blood clot and i don't see that swelling in limbs is a side effect so for anyone looking to something other than Neurontin for nerve pain problems? i recommend this drug.

I have been prescribed trileptal for nine years for bipolar disorder. It has been very effective as a mood stabilizer. Lithium did not work well for me. Each person is different. Consult your physician.

I was diagnosed with Clinical Depression & Acute Anxiety when I was 24 years old. I was on every kind of antidepressant, one after the other. But I was having the wildest mood swings that I didn't understand. Finally, after a complete mental breakdown in 1992, I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar II, mixed, rapid-cycling. At that time I was prescribed Lithium and/or Depacote. Those 2 drugs would add 10 pounds on me, every year. So, I'd stop taking them! After a while, I'd have another episode and have to be re-evaluated & given new meds. Since 2005, I've been on Prozac, Trileptal & Xanax. After starting Trileptal, I was able to lose 50 pounds.I'd like to lose more but this drug has helped me. But I'm one of the ones who do more harm to myself & others when I'm in a hypomanic episode. But while I was taking Lithium & Depacote; I was much more lethargic/confused. Read More Read Less

I incurred a closed head TBI 16 years ago with a GCS of 3T for 23 days and on life support. Last year I began experiencing seizures and the VA begin an evalution. I attended a 24/7 EEG and videotape clinic in Madison where after 3 days I was diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy having complex partial seizures. I was already on divalproex for organic affective disorder (mood disorder) and the chief nuerologist prescribed this med. With he addition of this med the performance was phenominal and fused the neurotransmitters and calmed and eased my mind which resulted in an emotional awakening, a cognitve recovery, and increased self awareness. There are still issues compensated for by the injury and the dual diagnosis such as accelerated thought processes which result in convergent thoughts, but the only deficit resulting from the use of tis med is some sleep deprivation but that is being addressed with an increase in risperdone.Read More Read Less

Doc put me on this as insurance wouldn't pay for brand name Trileptal which I had taken for years. Condition is epilepsy. Decided to mix the two meds but was experiencing extreme fatigue, muscle aches in neck/shoulders, chest pain. Felt like I had been hit by a bus. Paying for name brand again and feel great. No way would I go back.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar in 1989. This medication was given to me in additional to Lamictal as a mood stabelizer. I also have chronic neck pain. Most of the time I sleep more then I'm awake and have a lifeless feeling. My Dr. wants me to hang in there, for fear of a relapse. I can't wait to get off this drug. I also feel that it is the cause of my weight gain. I am taking additional (new meds) so it's hard to pin point. I suspect this drug for my extreme fatigue and inability to see that tomorrow might be better. I do reacct strangly to medication so don't let my comments scare you off. We must never give up with this disease. Read More Read Less

I was having three to four seizures a day on other drug therapies and now I'm not!I take 150mg twice a day with 100mg four times a day of dilantin and I have my life back. Some of the side effects I experience are tolerable ie: frequent urinating. However, I tend to becoume outraged over little things that don't normally set me off. But, now that I know that is a side effect of the drug maybe I can remember that and not be so hostile. I won't give it up because for two years I was house bound...not like me at all. I encourage anyone to give this drug time and a chance to work.Read More Read Less
