Have taken this for years, literally, since no insurance (come on Medicare) for the "magical purple pill"- it works very well and I start to suffer symptoms by second day of I don't get to the store for more- so it definitely relives symptoms. What amazes me is that it is the main ingredient in the expensive OTC (Prilosec, Zantac etc) and you can buy 200 tablets 150 mg at Walmart for about $7.00. ...

My doctor gave me this to try to help with the heartburn I had developed from apparent GERD, while it did help my heartburn at night while I slept, I noticed it caused me to have more heartburn overall and more frequently, if I missed a dose I would get severe heartburn. Until now I only had heartburn while laying down, now I have heartburn all the time. I wanted to have less heartburn, not take...

I have been taking this for about two weeks, 150mg twice a day. It works good for the most part but I have been having severe lower back pain and I'ts very intolorable. Has anyone else had this problem? I looked it up and there is nothing showing back pain as a side effect.

I was prescribed the 300 version of this, but found it to be much more unpleasant than the 150 OTC version. I had no side effects with the 150 version, but am having constipation with the 300mg. I thought drinking a lot of water with the pill would help this but a) it doesn't seem to and b) you are supposed to take this before bed, but I don't want to drink 10oz ov water before I go to bed. I am going to stick to the OTC, but that is not covered by insurance.

A little concerned with the long term side effects that are being discussed here but so far it has been amazing. I have Barretts Esophagus and constant heartburn with severe pain since taking this I have been able to resume working and I am an]ble to sleep again without sitting up.

I have been on 300 mg a day of Ranitidine, for severe GERD. I've had trouble with side effects, including constipation, inflammation of the Pancreas, depressed mood, stomach infection attributed by my MD to decrease in good bacteria in my stomach due to this drug, and sudden, extreme sleepiness. For this reason, I stopped taking it, and concentrated on other means of controlling it, such as improved diet to keep food moving along, staying still after I ate, eating frequent small meals, and not eating for hours before bedtime. This helped me as much as the medication.Read More Read Less

It seems I'm the only one that has experienced the very soaking, wet night sweats. I was experiencing night sweats before, but now I've had to change my sheets 3 nights in a row. I've also been diagnosed with a ulcer. But it seems the question is are we supposed to continue to take this medicine for an extended period time?

I was prescribed this by MD for occaisional mild heartrburn in throat at night, tums was doing fine. I have become very sick, distention on lower left side so much pain. Cannot eat, I am a diabetic and can onlly "eat" glucose tablets and drink sips of water for past 2 weeks. while I do need to lose weight, this is very wrong. No bowel movements at all, except for one 3" round mass. I cannot stand it, it stops today! I am glad it works for those with a problem, but if you don't have a serious condition, avoid it, and always question the prescriber.Read More Read Less

fecal material seems to harden and feces become difficult to pass and form fecal balls and must "strain" to pass. have taken continuously for a couple of year. This is an 83 year old female (my wife)who has a marginally healthy immune system very susceptable to exposure to respiratory enviornment that deviates from the norm. as long as we remain "at home" she O.K.--- go to a restaurant --- two days later she starts coughing. It takes about a couple of weeks to recover. she has taken flu vaccine annually and has had the pneumonia shot in the past 2 or 3 years.Read More Read Less

Was using OTC Zantac for about 3 months then doctor wrote prescription for Ranitindine 1 year ago, generic is very cheap and my Insurance covers it. It works extremely well, I don't dare try to sleep without it. More effective for me after meals. Finally got an EGD done and was just diagnosed, with erosive esophagitis, hiatal hernia and ulcers so they now want me to start Nexium but I think I will remain with Ranitindine...it is THAT good! and no warnings about bone issues as with Nexium, etc.
