This drug has saved my sanity. I have been on and off Effexor 3 or 4 times. If you do not go off of this drug slowly it can cause terrible side effects. If taken as the doctor prescribes, it is great.

(No side effects, absolutely zero. )Well I thought this was working until it got worse and worse, which I think was from quitting Lexapro.I quit taking effexor a couple days ago after taking for three months (No withdrawal whatsoever, which obviously means it wasn't working) Quitting my Lexapro was harder than any medication I've ever quit and I have realized how good it actually does work for me....

I had a horrible time while I was on this medication. My PCP put me on this right before I left home for college. She thought the stress I was going through was related to depression but the fact was I was scared to move 15 hours away to go to school. I was on this medication for 2 years and if I missed a single dose, I would feel the withdrawal symptoms immediately. I would have trouble walking, very unsteady (like I was 80 years old), extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, weakness, tired all the time. When I tried to stop taking the medication, I couldn't go more than 2 days even with 37.5 mg. Finally, I just had to deal with the withdrawal symptoms and laid on a couch for a whole week until I was completely detoxed. It was the worst experience of my life...and the medicine did nothing to help my "depression". RESEARCH everything before you start taking something that you know nothing about. Don't trust your doctor just because they went to medical school.Read More Read Less

Good Morning, I took XR for two years and it really didn't help alleviate any anxiety for me. In fact, it heightened it. When i drank a mixed drink, i became an angry drunk. I attribute the increased angriness to this drug because i haven't had a problem since i've been off it. There is a reason why it says not to drink alcohol while taking this med. If thats a problem for you, then i would do some additional research. also, the weight gain was awful. I gained 20lbs in 3 months. I'm usually very petite and this was such a tramautizing event for me that i became more depressed. Overrall, just do research before this is prescribed to you. My midwife, who has no mental health training, gave this to me. I find this absolutely irresponsible. It ruined my life for two years and since i've been off, i feel like my old self. it brought me out of a depression but it made me borderline manic. I was acting uncharacteristic and had a bad gagging reflex even when i would swallow water. also, i was unable to climax sexually for the entire time I was on the medication.

As soon as my doctor took me from 37.5 mg to 75 mg, I started having severe headaches, sensitivity to light, left ear and jaw hurt. Very similar to migraine headaches. My PCP thought it might be TMJ. So, went to dentist and they made a TMJ splint. Has not helped at all. Will call my doctor and tell her of the headache ... problems.

I have been on EffexorXR for about six mos now. I can tell that the drug is working because I dont get as angry at work about every little thing anymore. I have this, dont care attitude now. I have had to go more than 24 hrs without it because of the cost and it was very uncomfortable. I have tried other antidepressants and never experienced anything like this. I got extreme nausea, upset stomach, brain buzzes and more. I am on the highest does my Dr can give me, 225mg a day. Recently I asked for something cheaper and was rx the generic. I see or feel no difference.Read More Read Less

I have been taking Effexor XR for 3 months and I am feeling so much better! Instead of sitting around my house, I am redecorating and getting things done. I am a new person. I was previously on Prozac with minimal effects I reconmend this to anyone who needs it.

Not a great choice for me. I'm not the type of person that likes to take medication period. The withdrawal from stopping is the worse I've ever experianced. Its like taking LSD. It works in the beginning but subsides the longer you take it.

The drug worked great at the beginning, but overtime, it seems that it is not the best choice for me. The one big problem with this drug is if you miss a dose the withdrawl effects are very noticeable.

Just beware that you can't stop taking the meds all at once. If I miss a dose, the withdrawl is pretty severe. I get these "head zaps" and dizziness and im extremely sick to my stomach. If a doctor steps down the dose, I'm told this doesn't happen. It's worth it though because I need to stay on it... it has saved my life, I am a much better person now. FYI I am on 150 mg 1x/day.

I started taking Effexor XR three years ago and it has made a dramatic difference in my quality of life (150 mg once a day). I also deal with adult ADD, and Effexor has made it easier for me to concentrate and follow through on tasks. I'm very thankful to my doctor for recognizing the signs of both depression and ADD and prescribing this for me.

I take 300mg per day (2 pills of 150mg), which is 1 dose away from the most mg allowed to be prescribed by law. If I do not take this medication EXACTLY 24 hours every day, immediately I start getting withdrawl symtoms. Being a recovered drug addict, I know it is much like a withdrawl from heroin. 1st is the migraines. Then the sweating, bones hurting, vomiting, diareah, it's horrible. But, that's how I never miss a dose. The more extreme symptoms I wrote about do not happen until the 1st full 24 hours without the medicine. But, nonetheless, I've been free from depression for 4 years now, and clean and sober for the same amount of time. i would recommend this product only if you plan to be on it for a LONG period of time, as you can tell what it will be like to try to get off of it.Read More Read Less

Menopause took my sometimes edgy personality beyond the edge, and kept it hostage. Any upset became fly off the handle blind anger. This med stopped the derailment, totally and completely. And immediately. I still get angry, but it doesn't overtake me anymore. I wish I could recapture the first two weeks on 39.5 mg; absolute contentment. Doubling that did not much of anything; doubling it again (today) has been nice, but I still deal with being me. I was afraid of meds like this; felt if I couldn't do it myself, I was weak and worthless. Lemme tell ya, this med has made me ME again, to where I can interact with the world again instead of evading because I fear yet another inappropriate outburst. I do like yakking with people; I am no longer sullen, which prevented that. On the job, instead of finding fault with everything and anything, I've recaptured the joy in my ability to do what I do. One idiot I work with, instead of being a source of bristling irritation, is just an idiot, period. I still get angry and experience frustration; I'm still me. But I don't find myself wanting to grab a baseball bat and knock some sense into people's heads anymore. This med did not work for my biological daughter. Can't judge meds like this that way. But she did say it was nasty to get off of. Weird positive side effect I've noticed: when first taking, and at each dosage increase, my breathing is easier (I have asthma). All in all, the positive of this med (no longer itching to jump out of my skin and whack somebody) is well worth it. I watch the ceiling at night with each dose increase; when I do sleep, dreams are clearly remembered. I am well pleased with this medication. Me, who resisted messing with my psyche to the max for years. If you're sitting on the fence, I'd say go ahead and jump in. The water's fine.Read More Read Less
