Where oral pain medicines have failed, this nasal spray works quickly to block the pain and let me sleep off my migraine. It's the most effective treatment I've used and doesn't require a trip to the Doctor's office or ER for treatment. Having this medicine available has greatly reduced the amount of time my migraines last. Before, using hydrocodone for the pain, I would have to take numerous dose...

Took it 5 or 6 times, always when in bed. Maybe an hour of relief then 3 hours of jumpiness, heart pounding, and very itchy nose in addition to original symptoms. Was directed to take it as last resort (if Maxalt didn't work) so might work better taken at onset of migraine but I'm afraid to try it again.
I have been a treated for almost 30 years by a neurologist for my chronic migraines. I take several medication to prevent migraines. Butorphanol Nasal spray has been a lifesaver for me. It has definitely kept me from going to the ER many times. I do have a bad taste in my throat after I use this medication, but I feel like thatâ??s a small price to pay, because it works so well for migraine relief.
I have used this medication as a last resort for migraines to stay out of the E.R. It works too for that. I have not had to go for years because of using this.
It makes me sleepy within 10 minutes. I have to urinate about the same time even when I use the restroom seconds before use. It also leaves a funny taste in the back of my throat. Overall the nasal spray is helpful in treating my pain. I only use it as a last resort though as it is a strong medication.
This is the one medication that has helped me stay out of the ER. Of course now my PCP is refusing to fill this anymore for me.
I have had migraines for years. I do the steroid treatments and this spray is a great back-up to sleep at night. My migraines come in the early morning hours. It will help you sleep and block out pain. Don't plan on doing anything for 3-4 hours after using spray.
I've had occasional (~4 times per year) classic migraines for the last 35 years. OTC analgesics have been useless. As prescription medications: first, I used ergotamine; then I switched to sumatriptan; then, I added butorphanol as a back-up when the sumatriptan didn't work; then, I dropped sumatriptan and relied wholly on butorphanol. It seems like a blunt instrument because it's not focused on the specific pathophysiology of migraine, but butorphanol has worked wonders for me. Like clockwork, 15 minutes after I use it, I will have relief. The intracranial pressure will still be there, but I won't perceive it as distressful. Typically, I'll then sleep somewhat fitfully and feel a little warm, but things will be pretty good. I used to take my other migraine meds as soon as the aura phase began, but because of the reliability and speed of butorphanol, I feel okay about waiting until I'm seriously in the pain phase to medicate. Consequently, I can avoid medicating at all if I have aura without migraine. As far superior as the "butorphanol feeling" is to the "migraine feeling", normal (migraine-free, med-free) life for me feels even better! Thus, there is no temptation for me to abuse this drug. Treatment for use on my Chronic Migraines, cluster, & nummular headaches. I started this medication in 1997 with Maxalt for the migraines from a family practice doctor near my home town. I moved to Missouri and enrolled in the VA health care and the Doctor was happy with this result. He continued the prescription nearly 2 years, and I moved to Nebraska. The VA is not like the one I went to. We have nothing but resident doctors, and they changed me to ultram. 8 years, 2 occipital nerve surgeries.. and still pain. Fired from job of 6 years because it was very hard to smile when you feel like you are dying.. It took till 2010 and still will not prescribe it, but the 5mg Oxy does very little. In 1999, I had a hysterectomy and my Doctor asked of pain meds that worked. This took care of my post op pain as well. I asked a dentist for this med, and he has no knowledge of it, therefore will not prescribe it. Even with Medical Documents, and a Court Judge fully favorable of my chronic pain.. Wake up DOCTERS... I am 51, and Narcolepsy effects my pain. I need my teeth extracted, but can't get my meds (oxy) because I get it already. I do not want that.. Oxy does not work for me. We tried 15 others as well. Stadol being the least habit forming, is being the most denied.. Even my Cat gets better pain meds then myself.. Good luck to all. If you get Stadol, it works. Never use a bottle left out in the heat, or a bottle you dropped on the ground. Take it to your pharmacy and try to get them to change it out.. Read More Read Less
I suffer from Chronic Migraines and Cluster Headaches for the last 35 years. Tried all the meds out there. My doctor suggested Butorphanal Nitrate Nasal Spray. I haven't had an ER visit since my first use 9 months ago. My Cluster Periods are Dec-June-Sept; 2-3 episodes lasting 48-72 hours. Rollar Coaster episodes: 3-4 hours pain level 10; 1-2 hour windows pain level 5-6 for the entire 48-72 hours. Then Cluster Episode ends as quickly as it started. I don't mind the bad taste; the relief and sleep is worth it. The bottle says one should get 14 sprays; I have gotten around 10 sprays. Maybe because there may be 7-10 days between the episodes. I hope this spray continues to do the trick. I know I will always have to schedule my activities around my headaches. But at least I have some relief when my clusters and migraines occur. I hope that 3 bottles per year is enough. I don't want the appearance of a "junkie". But to find RELIEF in a spray and not having to worry how I am going to pay for 4-5 ER Visits per year is a blessing. Read More Read Less
When I was first diagnosed with CVS (after a barrage of neurological, gastro and exploratory surgeries to rule out EVERYTHING else), none of my local doctors had heard of it. I had doctors from Mayo trying to use me as a guiniea pig because they at the time were saying how rare it was for this ailment to affect adults. That was 14 years ago. My attacks at one point were so severe I was in the ER about 1-2 times a month, with Dilaudid being the only thing that would knock me out and make the vomiting stop. So much so that since I went to the same hospital every time, they had a file with exact procedure of what had to be administered and how. But, and here's where we all seem to share like experiences, these health care "professionals" always treat me like a DRUG SEEKER. Not only is this embarrassing and humiliating, it slows down the administration of sed meds and prolongs my agony while some nurse "tsk-tsks", BEGRUDGINGLY following written directives from the head ER physicians. They put me on everything from Vicadin to Oxy to these crazy powerful Fentanyl suckers that cost about $80 a pop, with insurance! Talk about not being able to function! I was either too sick or too drugged up to think clearly. But then i was introduced to Staidol and it has been, as so many others have also shared, nothing short of miraculous. That was 6 years ago. Now that my doctor keeps me in supply, my symptoms are WAY more manageable, and (knock on wood) I've only had to go to the ER once in the past 3 years. So, while I'm happy with the performance of this life-altering drug, I'm also acutely aware of the its one main side effect, HORRIBLE treatment by medical professionals. Facts: 1) Staidol WORKS and works VERY WELL 2) Staidol works VERY FAST 3) Staidol is so safe they use it on pregnant women! -But, and here's the kick in the teeth... 4) Doctors don't want to prescribe it to cover their own asses! - DON'T GIVE IN! Demand the amount u need! Damn their judgment!Read More Read Less
I've suffered from migraines since I was 16.(Im 45 now) They got much worse when I was pregnant and after that they went crazy! (Doctor said that I couldnt have had a prob. during pregnancy-that just doesnt happen!!!) I disagree and cried when I found this med-it also go's by STADOL Nasal Spray-I have recommended it to others-to talk to their doc about. Makes my sleep a little eratic-but if it the pain wakes me-I am able to take this med during the night. I dont know what kind of mother I would be if I didn't find this med. I take Neurontin daily-it helps alot!! But there are still times when the pain breaks through and this med has been a god sent to me and I can be the best mom I can be-Read More Read Less
I have had Chronic Intractable Migraines ever since a car accident in 1989. I average 4 migraines a week. I have tried most every other treatment and medicine. I even had the wires implanted on my head to block the pain signals to no avail. Sometimes a nerve block shot with lidocaine in the temple region helps some. Stadol is the only medicine that works consistently and quickly. Until something better comes up it is my prefered treatment, and yes it does keep me out of the ER.
I have suffered with migrianes for over 26 years and have taken all kinds of pain meds during this time. This medication works and works quickly. It is a God send.
I have been using this drug for a little over three years and it has been nothing short of miraculous. When I go to the ER, I am treated like a drug seeker, even though I have a history of migraines on file, and am treated like nothing less than a junkie. I just stopped going, because all they would give me was a muscle relaxer and imitrex, which I had at home, and did not work! I even tried the imitrex autoinjecter which hurt like heck, but helped for a few months. This has been the only drug to help for a long period of time. I can actually get out of bed and take care of my toddler now, and the cost is much more reasonable than the migraine pills.Read More Read Less
This Rx is what keeps me out of the ER. Have had migraines for over 30yrs. Really tired of being looked at like an addict just out for drugs every time I have a migraine. Spray wks well when nausea makes it difficult to keep a pill or capsule down. I've tried all the drugs like Imitrex for headache, Topamax and many others for prevention, none wk. Spent wks in neuro clinic for every kind of test, tried every kind of new medicine, was told I'm just one of many who will just have migraines that have to be treated for pain when they esculate. I'm not an addict, the horrible crippling pain is real. Thanks to the govmt drs are afraid of prescribing strong, narcotic drugs. For that WE suffer. Stadol works as long as I have it onhand when a headache starts. It works fast, if and when I can get it.Read More Read Less

Having this medicine available has greatly reduced the amount of time my migraines last. With the Butorphanol nasal spray, I only need 1 or 2 doses and I am able to sleep well for 8 hours and have a higher success rate for faster pain relief.Read More Read Less
For the last 26 years I have suffered with spinal/cluster headaches and have been prescribed virtually every type of medication with little to no relief. Within the last 7 years I have been diagnosed with hemiparisys that affects the right side of my body and has prevented me from doing pretty anything. This medication allows me to be able to function again. There is a little bit of a foul taste but not enough of one to be worried about.
This medication is amazing and so easy to use i suffer from severe back pain and isntead of popping vicodin all day and killing my life a couple squirts up the nose and im pretty much pain free I cant stand the nasty after taste though gotta get rid of that
I have Cluster Headaches as well as Migraines. I have Fibromyalgia. I have headaches every day. Nothing helps. Percocet dulls the Migraines, but nothing has helped my Cluster Headaches which I have been having over 10 years. The Butorphanol Nasal Spray helps immediately, I have been able to actually maintain and interact with my family. And to have a light on. But, as noted by one of the above responses, I got a very small bottle which only dispenses about 14 sprays. I called the pharmacy and they said it isn't supposed to be filled for a month. So, I am putting in a call to my Dr. to see if there is something she can do to get me a larger bottle. But I really am happy to be able to interact with my family again.Read More Read Less
I was given thes med because I can not take pill forms of narcarits and it is working well, I had abdominal surgery and lots of staples and pain. this is helping pretty well. the only thing is I do get a mild headach with it but if I relax and cose my eyes for a bit everything is good.
I have used this drug for 10 years for menstural cramps. I usually end up in the ER about 3 times a year, but if I can get this drug in me in time the ER is not needed. There has only been 1 time that this drug did not help me at all, even after taking a double dose.
