Took this for MRSA infection on my skin, prescribed my my derm. Discovered that some of my acne cleared up (on my back) and so did the folliculitis on my legs (I have a lot of skin problems). Turns out all were being caused by various forms of staph, and the Bactrim is treating them all. My derm has allowed me to stay on it long-term for the acne/folliculitis.

I took bacterim for a urinary tract infection. My doctor wanted a powerful drug to get on top of it. I took it last year and it worked fine. This time after 30 min of taking it I had hives and my throat and tongue were swelling. I also had incredible burning sensation and felt out of it. I took benadryl which seemed to help. I continued to have breathing problems through the night. I will never take this medicine again.

While weeding my garden, I received a bite from a nasty little spider. I didn't think much of it until a week later, when the place where it bit me was red, painful, and tripled in size. My Dr. said I had a staph infection, and prescribed Bactrim. I saw a big difference by the next evening! No more weeding without gloves for me, though.

Within 24 hours I developed a rash. Had no idea why until I looked this drug up several days into treatment. Rash is spreading all over my body. I stopped the drug immediately. The itching is horrible. I see y doctor tomorrow and will probably have to pay for more medication.

I was prescribed bactrim because of the acne that's been terrorizing me since I was a young girl. I was given it for a few days for a UTI a month or so before my acne visit, so I didn't see the long term effects. After about four or five days I could see immediate acne clearance, and as I've had no bad history with allergies or bad reactions to medications, the only side effect I noticed was dizziness, which I am already prone to. This and a topical cream cleared me up instantly. I had qualms at first because of the list of awful side effects but I continued to take it to avoid conflict with my mother, and I must say I'm entirely pleased. I have never been able to look in a mirror and be happy with what I saw, but I finally found the self confidence that's been eluding me since I was a child. I've never been happier with the way that I look.Read More Read Less

For my first UTI I used Keflex, but that turned me inside out. Then the symptoms came back. It didn't kick the infection. Next time I used Bactrim. It worked. No side effects. My biggest complaint is how big these pills are! They are huge and dry, hard to swallow. And if it doesn't go down on the first try, it is nasty! These pills should be coated for easier swallowing. I don't have trouble with other pills! Bactrim worked for me with no side effects.

I started taking this after switching from a different med. I started feeling like I had the flu. I was nauseated, had a headache, gas out both ends, feeling lousy and no appetite. Reported this to my dr. who said it was from the UTI. After my last dose I started having a rash and then welts and red all over me. Called my dr. and we decided it was an allergic reaction after all, the rash and welts were just the last straw. I will never use this again no matter what.

med caused hives, yellow eyes, red round patches of skin issues that has taken 4 weeks to heal. Made me vomit all the time to the point I lost 15 pounds in the 2 weeks of being on it. Been off of it for 5 weeks now and still struggle with a rapid heart rate, chest pains and shortage of breath. My body still aches all over, and I'm tired all the time. I ended up in the ER over this med.

I had a minor bacterial infection on my eyelid. My doctor prescribed a double dose of Bactrim twice a day for a week. It cleared the infection right up (no more itchy, swollen, painful eyelids) but then after four days I got a migraine. The fifth day I looked up and got dizzy and everything started to go dark but fine when I sat down immediately then another migraine that night. I was dizzy every time I stood up for about 5-10 seconds until the medicine was out of my system. It worked wonderfully for the infection and I would take it again but would be more aware of the side effects next time.Read More Read Less

I am a caregiver for an 82 yr old man, and this summarizes a recent experience w/ my client. Drug was perscribed for 7 days after removal of an ingrown toe nail, which had caused a minor infection. On the evening of day 6, a deep red rash developed and spread like wild fire over ENTIRE body, worst on the torso, covering 80% of back and chest. Very, very itchy. Went to ER & was given Prednizone & Zyrtec perscriptions to relieve itching as well as a Steroid cream for especially bad spots. Also used over-the-counter Hydrocortisone cream and Calamine lotion, all of which helped ease the itching and limit the necessity for using the perscription steroid cream (which also has its own side effects if over used). Within 2 days, the itching was pretty much gone but the rash remains. (ER dr said that would take some time to disappear.) After looking on the internet for info on this drug, I realize it should've never been prescribed in the first place due to patient's advanced age, being diabetic and on Warfarin. INR count & blood sugar levels were highly elevated for 3 days after ceasing Bactrim. This is likely a good antibiotic for most people, but, based upon this experience, I encourage people to check out the the warnings about this drug to see if you fit into one of the categories that are at risk for adverse reactions, and BELIEVE them. There are many other antibiotics available, so I wouldn't recommend this one if you have any of the listed risk factors for Bactrim. Read More Read Less

I was on it for a week. Three days after starting, I developed a chicken pox-like rash and diarrhea, and stopped eating due to dizziness/nausea. After I finished it, I started having pain and tenderness in my upper abdomen. It is a week since I stopped it and I am still dizzy and in pain. I have been on a liquid diet for 5 days. I have seen the doctor three times, gotten tons of blood work done and the source of the pain/dizziness is still a mystery. This was my second time taking it, and I was not, to my knowledge, allergic to sulfa drugs.Read More Read Less

I have been taking this medication for reoccurring UTIs and I have had no problems. I have been using it as needed for the past 4 months and it is the only antibiotic that the bacteria isn't resistant to. My only complaint is weight gain over the past few months... but I believe that has other reasons.

This drug caused a major allergic reaction in my son that sent him to the hospital with hives over 95% of his body, swelling and bad headache. The condition that this medication was prescribed for also worsened. He ended up being in the hospital for five days.

I know most everyone else had a bad experience with this drug but I didn't. I finished it approx. 3 weeks ago. I did have to break the pills in half because they were so large but after doing so they were easy to swallow. I took them for a UTI. It did come back so I don't know if they didn't clear it or if it just came back again. (Switching to D-mannose this time) As far as side effects go I didn't have a single one. I know many others also have had side effects come up some time after they finished the medication. I didn't have any problem with that either. Overall it was a positive experience. I didn't give it five stars only because I wasn't completely sure it cleared up my infection despite taking it twice a day for 10 days. BTW, this was my first UTI ever.Read More Read Less

I have been described this medication many times over the past few years because I am allergic to so many other antibiotics. So far I haven't had any problems with Bactrim, but I woke up this morning with my throat feeling like it's swollen. Although that could be because it got cold in the middle of the night and I didn't have any heat on because it wasn't cold when I fell asleep. It was actually too warm. I think time will tell. If the swelling doesn't go down by the time the next dose is due, I will simply have to go to the ER and get a different antibiotic. The only other one I can take is ampicillin, I CANNOT take Levaquin and I am terrified of it anyway. Have you not seen the warnings for Levaquin advertised on television? Truthfully, Bactrim has has always helped me, so don't let what others have went through keep you from at least trying it if your doctor prescribes it for you. We can have no allergy to something today, yet develop an allergy to it tomorrow. I have learned that the hard way, I take pneumonia in the summertime !!! (Because of my health problems, my immune system is weak) due to not being able to be as active as most people.Read More Read Less

Lower back pain, rash, burning red skin, headaches, chills, achey all over. Pretty sure my kidneys were inflammed and swollen causing the back pain. It cleared up my infection quickly but the side effects were aweful. Would never consider taking this ever again.
