I'm 28, was diagnosed with Narcolepsy and EDS 3 years ago. I have tried nearly every stimulant prescribed and finally got to this. I take 3.75x2 and it works great. I have done tons of research on this drug. FYI, this drug was used by weightlifters in the 80's as 90's as a fat burner. It boosts your metabolism while on it which is why some people get crazy hungry when on it. To alleviate...

This medication landed me in the hospital. I almost died and was in a coma like stage. I had to spend a week in a psych unit because I had such bad memory loss, confusion and aggitation. This drug is not safe. From now on I have to go to therapy, take daily medication, and am unable to work, drive and do anything without the help of my husband. I was a healthy 28 year old female with insomnia ...

I have Fibromyalgia and do not sleep deep enough, stage 4 Rem. I have taken this medication for a least a year , on and off. My muscle spasms and pain level are greatly reduced when I am taking this. This medication has such a stigmatism from people misuse, however taken properly and under medical supervision it can help greatly.

I took this med for a few months, and it truly did help me with my narcolepsy. I was able to fall asleep and stay asleep, 2 things i hadnt done in years. However, I had the "midnight snack" attacks as well, and that was eventually frustrating enough that i asked not to take it anymore. However, I have not been able to take any other drug with effects nearly as posistive and the Xyrem. Even large doses of xanax don't always put me to sleep, and then you have that "hangover" feeling the next day from taking so much, which totally defeats the purpose when you have narcolepsy. So, while Xyrem is not for everyone, if you can handle the side effects, I would definitely say go for it!Read More Read Less

It helps me get much needed sleep I have been lacking for years. It is a pain to have to mix every night. I have actually lost weight since taking Xyrem. Need to drink plenty of water or your urine will smell strong with medicine. Satisfied

It is very funny to read that someone else ate on this like I do. Im 25 now and been taking Xyrem for about 2 1/2 yrs, at first it hard to adjust but now I can't ask for a better treatment! But beware if you drink while Xyrem is in your system can be VERY shocking!I black out and fall like I did before I was perscribed the medication.

Diagnosed with Narcolepsy. Previously dx with depression and unsuccessfully treated. Xyrem and a correct dx of Narcolepsy saved me! Have to adjust dose up and down to manage side effects, but finally wake up feeling awake!

12 years ago i was diagnosed with narcolepsy and cataplexy I started taking xyrem about a year ago. It realy worked well when i found the right amount for me specifecly. i do worry about the HIGH salt content. and I did find myself raiding the fridge in a state of drunkeness in the middle of the night eating anything I could find. My wife would get up and the kitchen looked like racoons had invaded it. i do not take xyrem now because the cost for me without insurance is $1000 a month. i would recomend trying this to anyone who needs this but. BE VERY CAREFUL IT IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with fibromyalsia some 10+ years ago. My average sleep time per night was between 4 & 5 hours. With Xyrem, my average sleep time is between 7 & 10 hours. My dosage went to the max 4.25x2 per night, but I felt that was too much since the next day I was in a state of confusion and could not concentrate well. I dropped back to 3.75gx2 and am doing OK. And actually, I do not set the alarm for the 2.5 to 4 hours. After taking the first dose, I sleep and when I awaken about 5+ hours later, I take the second dose. I suspect the drug has some additional side effects regarding vision and hearing in my case. One morning, a number of months back, it took shaking me to wake me up. They thought I had passed. My pain level is virtually unchanged and my fatigue level is fairly high by the end of the day, but I am able to keep up with the younger generation in my work place without feeling sleepy.Read More Read Less

I have been on this medication for 6 months and have slept better then ever. xyrem causes numbness, dizziness, your legs and arms fall asleep and you get the pins and needles feeling. these are all normal side effects of the drug but they can be very scarry. It is not for everyone and I hope these effects dont increase or worsen because the sleep is wonderful !!!

I was taking this medication to treat Narcolepsy. At first I thought I had finally found the answer to my sleep problems. Then I gradually developed full blown psychosis, depression, hallucinations etc. It was REALLY bad.

recently my dosage changed up from 2.25 to 3.0 grams and I woke up with my eyes bloodshot,my face was wet with tears,I rubbed them and that was abig mistake cause it burns very bad.Nonetheless the plan is for me to get to 4.75 grams, increasing .75 every three weeks but so far I can't tell much difference. What clued us that I had a problem was now I know I have cataplexy.

5 months on this stuff...my doctor says I just need to work my way to the full dosage before I see any improvement. I honestly hate this medication. I started on 2.5g 2x/night and am now at 6g 2x/night (actually, I never wake up to take the second dose). The side effects are frustrating and humiliating. I've wet the bed twice, slept walked several times, and vomited a couple of times. What's worse is that while on it, I'm catatonic. I can't move whatsoever when awake. The educational materials state that in case of emergency the patient can get out of bed, but I don't buy it. I had once gotten out of bed stupidly after a sleep paralysis attack before the medication took full affect. A couple of moments later, I couldn't move. I was in and out of consciousness, but could not get out of my seat. My panicking sister was there to make sure I didn't fall out of the chair, but I was in this state for over an hour. That said, the folks at the "Xyrem Success Program" are useless. No help there. I wake up feeling groggy and terrible in general. It's just more hassel than its worth. I had high hopes for this one, but I've seen nothing that could be deemed "beneficial". Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this med for severe insomnia and when i was taking it i got the sleep i needed, was not hung over in the am and was able to keep my CPAP on all night. I felt the best i had felt in years. Then the md prescribing it retired and it has taken me at least 6 years to finally find a shrink who is willing to try it again. I am really lookin forward to feelig better again and not staying up playing hearts on the computer to keep me sane. It has its risks abut right now i am willing to try it again. I usually did not take the second dose but slept all night. If i woke up, once in a while i would take second one but only one helped. I probably shouldn/t say this but it also inhanced our sexual life as it relaxed me. I am hesitant cuz i don/t want to get addicted but i really need some sleep.Read More Read Less

I began taking Xryem after being diagnosed with Narcolepsy about 5 months ago. After about a month or so of taking 2.5 to 3 grams 2x per night, I noticed I really started losing interest in just about everything, finding joy in nothing. I decided it must be the Xyrem, so I didn't take it one night & the next morning I immediately felt better!! I knew I still needed the deep sleep that Xyrem provided, so I then took it upon myself to take 3 grams only once/night. It has worked out wonderfully for me. I get to the deep stages sleep and wake up feeling well rested (most of the time), usually before the alarm goes off (I've NEVER done that.)I actually feel "normal", which I haven't felt in a very long time. I don't know if it's related to Xyrem or something else, but I have also lost 25lbs without dieting or exercising. The only thing I can figure is that by actually getting the deep, restful sleep my metabolism has begun to function normally.Read More Read Less

I was taking for Narcolepsy for 3 years. Was on max dose, never slept after first dose, but did after 2nd. ONLY time I get a refreshing sleep! I have recently had to stop this med due to severe side effects of depression and suicidal thoughts, symptoms went away like magic after 2 days off drug, but now EDS and SP/HH are back. Love the drug, and it worked great for a while - but please be on the lookout for depression side effect.

In '06 I crashed and burned, and went to a sleep clinic. After 9 months of sleep studies and eliminating everything else, I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy. I began taking Xyrem in March '07. The first morning I woke up EARLY and feeling more rested than I could ever remember feeling!! I have always slept more than anyone I knew, and have done so my entire life. No more sleeping 18+ hours a day and not functioning the other 6! To get a good 8 hrs of sleep, it takes 3 doses; 3.75gm each, but WELL WORTH it. I don't really even have to set an alarm. When the meds begin to wear off, I wake up! I awake about 2 hrs after the first dose and 3 after each of the others. My biggest complaint is the high sodium content. Would NEVER want to go back to where I was without Xyrem!!!!Read More Read Less
