I have been taking for 13 mo.,After further testing am showing improvement. Am experiencing joint pain and back pain. Hair has thinned, and my vision has worsened. Diagnosed as optical migraines, however with both early menopause at 34, I'm almost 53, and severve gastroparesis, I am uncertain if these developements are from conditions or treatment. I am fatigued since starting treatment. But have been taking calcium supplements 3 x daily, Vit D perscribed weekly, Vit E, Fish oil w/omega 3, multi vit, and monthly vit B12 injections monthly, and Glucosamine w/Chondroitin. Improvements have been made in fatigue, hair loss, nails. Skin still extremely dry and pain level controled through various methods. Note still sustain fractures, but less frequent and bones no longer feel spongy, but do bruise easier. Read More Read Less

I stopped Forteo after 11 months because of worries about the rare bone cancer, but am considering taking it again. A bone scan after 6 months showed some improvement. I sometimes had VERY MILD back pain for a few minutes after injections. While on Forteo, I sometimes experienced more frequent urination. If your Dr. feels this is the best treatment for you, I would recommend it.

I am post-menopausal osteoporosis and take glucocorticoid drugs along with spinal medrol injections. I also have a multitude of autoimmune diseases. I've been taking Forteo for a year-and-a-half so far, and feel healthier and stronger than I have in many years. This drug is one of the best things that happened for me. It is the only item in my treatment that is actually holding my autoimmune diseases at bay. I am out of wheelchair care and walking again. my ANA among other tests, have gone from positive to negative since the addition of only this drug. It has been like a miracle drug for me and given me back a life. I felt some aching in my legs early in treatment, side effects seemed to be managed for me by simply taking two benedryl twenty minutes prior to injection -and taking the injection consistently at night so I would stay still and sleep shortly after. So, perhaps I slept thru problems I'm seeing others have. Sounds Like my plan of taking it last thing at night following benedryl and going to bed directly is a good one! Give it a chance to do its job, you'll be glad you did!Read More Read Less

My reason for reporting this is because of the change in my hair. I had curly hair. In the last 2 months the curl is gone and my hair has become wiry. A doctor has found no reason for the change since the only change in my lifestyle has been Forteo. I had been taking it for 6 months when the change was noted. Item 2 in this survey required that I answer it. Since I have been taking Forteo for only 8 months, how can I know if the drug has been effective or satisfactory which is why I gave each one star?Read More Read Less

Took the medication after much urging from rheumatologist and Primary. On day 18 slept 15 hours, was totally exhausted, on day 23 BP spiked up to 171/110 with a pulse of 100. I don't normally have HTN. Next day my face felt swollen, hoarse voice and sinuses hurt. Went to see Primary the morning after the BP spike and BP was fine, he suggested to continue med but I did not. 3 days since last injection and I feel back to normal. I'm not taking the chance of stroking out. Oh, one other weird thing the night of the BP spike I felt like ants were biting my lower leg and my face was sunburned looking. I teach nursing and the spike occurred during class. I could barely talk left the lass and had the ARNP check the BP, she wanted to send me to ER but I sat for about 45 minutes and rechecked BP it was still 152/80 but I got home. Really iffy drug for me. Read More Read Less

I have been on Forteo for 3 months. I have experienced a huge increase in my appetite I am hungry all the time it seems. I've been experiencing weird pains in my joints or possibly bones. My doctor says this could be what they call growing pains but now that I think about it how do I know if it might be bone cancer. These pains have me crying out at times. They cause my body to jerk at times too. I'm thinking about discontinuing the drug but then there isn't any other medication I would be willing to go on. Perhaps I'll look into something natural. This really makes me depressed.Read More Read Less

Was on Forteo for 2 years and just had a bone density scan -- my bone density has decreased from scan two years ago! I feel really let down and angry. This drug is extremely costly and my insurance only picked up a part of it. At age 68 and on Soc. Sec. it was difficult to pay for this ineffective drug. Will see my Dr. soon and What's Next?

I took Forteo injections for 2 years for osteoporosis. Took my vitamin E, etc.. I never had any side effects that I am aware of but my bone scan showed minimal improvement which was disappointing. Now I am supposed to start on Prolia, so I'm researching that medication.

Glad I didn't read these reviews before taking Forteo! Because of decreased bone mass, I was able to participate in a 6 year study of the effectiveness of denosumab (Prolia). There was some increase in my bone density and I never had any noticeable side effects. Unfortunately, I'm clumsy and had a serious fall, resulting in 5 compression fractures in my back. To build bone, not just maintain its density, my doctors recommended Forteo. After taking it for a year (again, I never noticed any side effects), I had scans done on my back and hips. All areas showed significant increases in bone density. I wasn't really surprised because I could tell my back was getting stronger. A year ago, I couldn't carry my grocery bags. As the months passed, I was lifting increased weight. My doctors want me to reserve the second year of Forteo in case I need it in the future. I will be taking Prolia now for maintenance. Although I never had any real problems with the daily shots of Forteo, like others have mentioned, my stomach has had its share of bruises, and I'm looking forward to only needing 2 shots a year with the Prolia.Read More Read Less

I have Giant Cell Arteritis and must be on high mgs (60 at the start, 30 presently) of prednisone to prevent blindness. Side effects of prednisone are causing numerable problems, including spinal compression fractures which cause extreme pain. To get me off of prednisone, I was put on a methotrexate treatment and in order to build up my bones, my doctor started me on Forteo 6/10/13 (Relcast injection caused allergic reaction and had to be stopped--Gastro dr. suspended Fosamax due to GERD). So far so good. Pain in rib cage and lower back lessened, but could be due to passage of time--fractures occurred in March. No weight gain so far, hair falling out but with the types of medicines I am taking, not surprising. Hope it grows back. Do have cushings from steroids which have distorted body horribly. Steroids are a horrible drug, but unfortunately the alternative is blindness. Not happy with many of the reviews and I am just hoping I only experience less pain, not more. Read More Read Less

During my second month on Forteo, I began to have bouts of vertigo and general dizziness. Driving a car became hazardous, and I had trouble just walking a straight line. Dosing every other day diminished my symptoms somewhat. I went off Forteo for two weeks. Subsequently, after my first injection the dizziness returned. I stopped the treatment. (I weigh 85 pounds and I believe that the standard dose of Forteo was just too high for me. However, it is not possible to reduce the dose.)

Started taking this b/c I went throught menopause in my mid-30s. I have been taking it for 6 weeks, no problems until 3 night s ago. All of the sudden, started having SEVERE back pain 5 minutes after injection. After the first episode, I waited a day, then tried another dose to see if the symptoms would return. They did. The back pain was excrutiating. Went to see my Dr. next day, was told to never try to take this drug again. They did not want to believe it was the Forteo, but I know my own body, and I know it was due to the Forteo. Would like to try Prolia, but now am afraid to try anything.Read More Read Less

I have been on Forteo for approx. 2 months. I only had an episode the first night with vomiting and nausea. The next day I was fine. I have had no problems at all so far but I do feel like my hair is falling out a little bit. Will check with the doctor about this at next appt. Otherwise no problems.

Lower back pain and joint pain since I started the injections but can deal with the discomfort if it strengthens my spine and hips.
