I was prescribed 100mg X2 daily for MSA (multiple system atrophy)by Neurologist. 1st week was awful: dizzy, palpatations, h/a, nausea, lack of appetite. Later, however, I have thought I could not walk or function without this. 2 different Pharmacists have asked me about my symptoms and warned me about side effects but I have only a few night sweats (could be menopause), a few palpatations, and some digestive problems I can live with in exchange for being unable to walk or move so much better!Read More Read Less

The neurologist prescribed this for tremors associated with Parkinson's to work with Cilazapril which I have been taking for 4 years with no problem. It works but I developed nausea, trouble sleeping, upset stomach and was very tired. He advised me to stop it as some people have a problem with amantdine.

After seven months, experienced severe hair loss, rapidly darkening teeth, dry mouth and livido reticularis (purple leg blotching). No positive effects. All negative symptoms disappeared after discontinuation of Amantadine (100 mg twice daily).

For the last six months I have had nausea, stomach pain. rashes, swelling of the feet and ankles, insanely itching over whole body and breathing issues. I've been to my primary dr,my dermatologist, my allergist and my neurologist. No one figured this out that it was the amantadine causes all of this. I also have had several blood test, cat scan, ultrasound, scope into my stomach and several new meds added to deal with all of symptoms. Along with major vision changes. Many of these symptoms are rare, but I just have that kind of body. LOL I will no longer go anywhere but to the movement specialist for any new symptoms that I discover because most of the other dr.'s have no idea what these meds do to you. I've already had to be weened off of pramipexal and now amantadine. So be careful and research your meds and listen to your body. Read More Read Less

I had a subdural hematoma and I have no stamina- taking amantadine to help - doesn't seem to be doing what I expected so i read these reviews-- I am hoping to stop taking this-- I have gained weight and still have no stamina to get motivated to even exercise-- I'm wondering if anyone else has these issues-- please let me know-- Has anyone else had another medicine that helped them with a better result ?

First started with Amantadine two years ago as the only med for PD symptoms. Worked very well for muscle stiffness and allowed me to better exercise. 100mg 3X day disrupted my sleep, so started skipping evening dose and sleep improved while still reaping drug benefits. Med started to lose effectiveness at about 18 months, but remains somewhat beneficial.

I have fatigue associated with MS. They tried me on this drug for over 2 months at different dosages and scheduling and it had zero effect on my level of fatigue. I finally just quit taking it. I found it to be useless.

this medication has led me to depression, severe headaches, dizziness and light headed. I'm already taking Azilect. I'm waiting to hear from my doctor on how I should proceed with this med.

My husband (age 62) was placed on the drug Amantadine (the generic for Symmetrel) a month ago and it has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride ever since! We are writing this to warn others of the potential dangers of using this drug. First diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in 2010 by our family physician he was referred to a neurologist for further treatment. My husband was then placed on first Sinemet (Carb Levo). He was not responding to the drugs and after a year the doctor (and myself) decided as they were not helping (and were very expensive plus we had no insurance) to take him off the drugs. We came back to the neurologist nearly a year later for further testing and evaluation. The doctor then placed him on Amantadine. The drug caused my husband severe reactions in the way of hallucinations and extreme mental reactions. He did increase his movement and alertness (what the drug is supposed to do) but also brought on mental issues such as speaking of things that never occurred or events that never happened. He also showed me things he saw that I never could see. He began to become overly active and fell several times a day, causing trauma to his head and back. One day he was trying to pick up our 65” TV and “clean behind it”, resulting in him falling and the TV falling on top of him! Lightheadedness and dizziness as well as blurred vision, unable to get to sleep and became extremely fidgety and talking incoherently are among other symptoms he had for about a week when taking 100 MG of Amantadine 3 times per day as prescribed by the neurologist. I had read we should not just take him off the drug so cut back to two pills then only one in the morning. The next day he got no more Amantadine and almost immediately seemed better with less and less dramatic episodes (seeing things and talking of non-existent subjects as he had been). This drug is, in my opinion, very dangerous and potentially extremely harmful!Doctor's please think twice! Read More Read Less

I'm on Provigil and, as a supplement, Amantadine. When I take Amantadine, twice a daily, I'm good to go. I get up each morning at about 0700HRS and take this and others. At 1215HRS, I take the second of these, nap for 45mins and I'm good until I decide to go to bed, usually at +2000HRS. For my life-style, it works. I must remember to have the dosages overlap. It's taken me a few tries to understand the need for the consistency. Other meds require food. After reading other contributions, I understand that food may be getting in the way FOR ME with this. I'll work it out. Managing MS ain't for sissies.Read More Read Less

I been taking Amantadine since 2000. I found it takes about 2 hours to work, also the emptier my stomach the better. So no breakfast for me.
