6 years ago, I was having about 1 gout attack a month in my feet and ankles, which would last for up to 2 weeks. The attacks were so bad I would end up on the floor in tears. I've broken many bones and had sprains due to my athletic lifestyle. The gout pain is/was by far was the most painful of anything I've experienced. I started on 100 mg of Allopurinol for 2 months, but the attacks still came. ...

I have been taking this drug for almost 5 years and have had 2 minor flare ups during this time. In the two years before the medication was prescribed, I was getting ~4 major flare ups (2 or more weeks start-finish) per year. My dosage started at 300mg and was raised to 450mg in year 2. This is a high dosage compared to other reviews I've read but I have no signs of side effects.

I have been on this medication for a time now but wondering if one of the side affects is leg cramping. It has helped with gout, I have little or no sessions with it but concerned if cramping is a side affect. I suffer at night with severe cramping.

Just a note to let others know that I took allopurinol for over a year, but due to uric acid not lowering as much as my Dr. wanted he raised my dosage to 300mg and I broke out in an itchy rash on my legs. I did not think it was the med so I treated it for a while with otc creams. Then I went to Dr. and he took me off of it and rash cleared within a couple of weeks. Not all drug allergies are immediate.

Back on this drug after many years. I am taking 300mg per day after titrating from 100mg I also take a single does of 0.6 colchicine per day which I will do for a year. My last experience with this drug caused severe goat attacks as my uric acid was being reduced. So far, no attacks after 2 months and I attribute this to the colchicine. I will say that I must eat with this medication and I get occasional stomach upset and diarrhea but I attribute that to the colchine as well.
