I've been taking Ambien for about 5 yrs. for chronic insomnia and night terror/nightmares. It has been a lifesaver for me but it IS a tricky drug. Take it when you are actually ready to go to sleep and you are already IN BED. Don't get back up!!! or you will be walking around the house eating, having weird conversations with your significant other about things that you would probably not be talkin...

Although it helps you fall asleep, it often stays in your system for greater than 8 hours. Per 60 minutes, it can impair cognition equivalent to being legally drunk. It was not safe to take on days that I was working.

I have been more depressed, with terrible thoughts of killing myself while on this medication. I know killing myself is not God's plan for my life, but I feel as hopeless as I have. I also don't remember things, like getting the car out of the garage and not seeing the neighbor's mailbox... and even more frightning...not understanding how I got out there in the first place. I am now trying to get off of Ambien and have not slept for 2 days in a row. I have also have cried all day for no good reason. I have to admit though, for the 2 months I was on it, I slept like a log. Best sleep I have had in years. But the thoughts and singing all night long is driving both my husband and I nuts! Good luck to you. I hope you don't have any of these symptoms.Read More Read Less

I have just discovered that I am experiencing sleepwalking while taking this. I am getting up in the middle of the night and preparing food and eating it! I am not taking it anymore. I would rather not sleep than risk burning the house down. One night I made cupcakes went back to bed left them in someone else turned the oven off after they burned! Dangerous

Been taking for 5 yrs and still does help me get a good nights sleep if I lay down right after taking. Warnings: if you take it every night, it is addictive and it does cause some short term memory loss.

No after effects. best treatment for insomnia. Can wake up in case of an emergency or simply sleep through the night.

It works very well as long as I go straight to bed, but if I have to get up to go to the bathroom, I can't always walk well. Now I feel as if I have to take it to get a "good nights sleep".

I work different shifts and Ambien has made it much easier for me to fall asleep and stay asleep when my body dont know when it is time to sleep. And when I have to try to take a nap before going in for a over night shift, it helps me fall asleep quickly.

Ambien has done wonders for me. I went 2 years or longer with almost no sleep and now sleep like a dream. A half one normally helps, but I sometimes wake up but a whole one works great.

I have been on Ambien for over 1 year, I do feel relaxed and I am able to fall asleep and sleep. I don't notice that it has lost effectiveness with me.
