Peter Shields, MD

Peter Shields, MD, is a professor of oncology and medicine at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University. He is the program leader for the Cancer Genetics and Epidemiology Program and the director of the division of cancer genetics and epidemiology in the department of oncology. In 2000, he became the associate director for population sciences and cancer control at Lombardi.

Shields is an internationally recognized leader in molecular epidemiology. He is a hematologist and medical oncologist and brings unique skills as a program leader for fostering program activities and translating them to the patient and population science level. Shields' research record includes more than 90 peer-reviewed research papers and more than 40 review papers and book chapters.

Shields was the first elected chairman of the Molecular Epidemiology Group of the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). He recently completed a four-year term as a standing member of the NIH Epidemiology and Disease Control 2 Study Section. Shields is on the editorial boards of the journals Carcinogenesis and Pharmacogenetics, and is an associate editor for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. Other committee work has included the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Assessing the Science Base for Tobacco and Harm Reduction, the Department of Energy's Joint Coordinating Committee on Radiation Effects Research for studies in the Russian Federation, NCI Tobacco Research Implementation Group, and NCI Lung Progress Review Group.

Shields is the principal investigator of several NIH and Department of Defense funded projects. He leads a Breast Cancer Center of Excellence, which is a multi-project grant focused on the relationship of alcohol and diet to cancer. He is the principal investigator of the joint Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and University of the District of Columbia partnership for cancer prevention and control. He is also leading several R01 funded projects and is the co-principal investigator of the Penn/Georgetown Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center.

Shields is active in the public health sector of the local community. He is the president of the board of directors for a local Latino free medical clinic and also sits on the District of Columbia Board of Medicine.
