Eczema can be caused by many triggers. To make matters even more complicated, each person’s eczema will be caused by different things. Here is a checklist of some of the most common triggers for eczema:

  • Irritants. Products such as specific soaps, detergents, shampoo, house cleaning supplies, and bubble bath can often trigger eczema. You might need to take out and add back in certain products in order to identify which products trigger your eczema.
  • Environmental factors. Often, an allergen to something like pollen or dust can trigger eczema. Other factors such as exceedingly cold or hot weather, pets, dust mites, pollen, or mold can also trigger eczema.
  • Food allergies. Certain food allergies can trigger eczema. Commonly the foods associated with eczema allergy triggers are cows milk, eggs, peanuts, soya, and wheat.
  • Fabrics. Certain materials like wool and synthetic fabrics worn on the skin can cause eczema flare-ups.
  • Hormones. Women often see a flare-up in their eczema around the time before their period or throughout their pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
  • Skin infections.
