Doctors have long recognized the emotional toll that eczema has on people. In fact, it's so common that depression is considered a comorbidity, or related condition, of eczema. Eczema is associated with increased rates of anxiety and depression, as well as problems sleeping. Despite the medical community's recognition of the psychological effects of eczema, many people still consider it just an itchy rash.

When you're struggling with the vicious anxiety/itch cycle that's so common with eczema, how do you explain it to people who believe it's just an itch? Answer the questions below and share your experience with others:

  • Do you try to explain your personal experience with eczema to others?
  • Do you point them to medical research that deals with eczema's psychological effects?
  • Do you just ignore them?
  • Does your response differ based on your relationship to the people in question?
