I am taking Horse Chestnut for my varicose veins (300 mg morning and night). They have been extremely effective in reducing the pain and heaviness in my calf. I recently ran out of tablets, and within a week I noticed that my calf started aching again. I need to take them with food, otherwise they make me extremely nauseous. (I accidentally took one on an empty stomach, and I threw up.) I also no...

Have used for years to treat hemorrhoids for years very successfully which - being quite bloody - anusol was failing to control alone. Also suffered from unprovoked blood clot in lower leg and took whilst on Warfarin to no impact on INR as far as I could tell. It seems horse chestnut promotes blood flow through strengthening of vein walls rather than by "blood thinning" as some other sources claim. At least in my experience. The one side effect of persistent use I am aware of is a drying of the skin especially on shins and arms.Read More Read Less

I have been using Horse Chestnut for two weeks. It has reduced the cellulite in my thighs, allowing my legs to feel lighter. Also my circulations is improving. At times I have to move my legs because I feel them stimulated. But trying to deal with dry mouth as a side effect! Venastat by Body Gold

Began using it after noting a degree of moderate swelling on one of my ankles. After 3 to 4 weeks of daily use swelling has reduced considerably. Ankle area has improved to about 80% of normal.

I was on the verge of having a second hemorrhoid surgery when I tried this therapy. Horse chestnut has all but eliminated my condition. I was on my second bottle of capsules before beginning to see improvement.

It has helped with restless leg syndrome. A good nights sleep is a blessing and horse chestnut complex is the answer.

(I accidentally took one on an empty stomach, and I threw up.) I also noticed that for the first day or two, I was slightly light-headed after taking them. That side-effect seems to have disappeared though. Overall, I am very happy with this treatment, and taking the tablets with food is a small price to pay for the relief they give me. Since I do not do well with compression theraphy, I found the Horse Chestnut Seed Extract to be the best alternative. The only problem I'Ve experience is getting it in 300 mg, the prescribed dosage.

I have had several blood clots in the legs and no one knows why (coagulopathy tests etc are all neg and no family history). I now have mild venous insufficiency and my hematologist recommended this. This treatment has caused it to recede.

I discovered this treatment out of desperation, looking for something to ease the bedtime itching of my varicose veins on my legs and feet. After the first 3-4 days of taking it- the itching stopped, my feet didn't ache in the evening and I am not exhausted at the end of the night. What a relief!

I have a heridtary clotting disorder and have experienced many deep vein and superficial clots. As a result, my veins are weak and the mechanism that returns blood to the heart is faulty causing blood pooling and swelling of the feet and legs. After less than one month using Horse Chestnut once daily, I have very little swelling, even after sitting at my desk for several hours. I do take Warfarin and do home testing of my INR, which has not been negatively affected. I started with 2 260 mg capsules daily and experienced muscle spasms within a week. When I dropped to 1 capsule, the spasms stopped. I have experienced blood shot eyes and came to this site to see if it is a known side effect of Horse Chestnut extract. Read More Read Less

I had severe edema of the legs and feet. I was taking Lasix but it didn't do any good. Then I stopped the Lasix and took horse chestnut. Within a month the edema was gone. When I ran out of the horse chestnul pills the edema returned. I bought a supply of horse chestnut and the edema again disappeared.

My primary physician gave me a bottle and said to take one capsule a day to help stop swelling of my ankles and feet. He DID NOT warn me that it could lower blood sugar (it has, dangerously), or make any reference to its side effects. In fact, he was rather casual about it. Nothing was written down about potency (of a "one per day"), brands to look for or avoid (Web MD cautions to look for a brand that has removed the toxin esculin), or any other consideration. Horsechestnut also amplifies the blood thinning effect of common pills like aspirin and other Rx drugs. It is good that mainstream docs are considering alternative remedies, but beware - ! - they may not be taking them seriously enough to be safe.Read More Read Less
