How much and how often should one take feverfew for hormonal migraine headaches? One poster here said to take 300 mg minimum of feverfew when a migraine comes on. Should one take it prior to migraines to try to head them off? I understand that everyone is different so it may just be a case of trial and error.

I started using Feverfew over 15 yrs ago for the headaches I often got just prior to my period. Nothing else was effective. Feverfew has consistently relieved every type of headache I have. Usually all it takes is one capsule though rarely I have to take two doses about 30-60 minutes apart. I most often buy GNC brand, but sometimes use a liquid preparation. I have never experienced side effects; just complete relief of my headache.

It worries me that you are recommending this for people trying to get pregnant considering: The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that feverfew might increase the risk of miscarriage or premature delivery. Don't take feverfew if you are breast-feeding.

I was originally diagnosed with arnold chiari malformation, in resent mri w/contrast it was not seen. However the pounding in the head has been unbelievable. I do not have migranes so neurologist do not know what it is. However using feverfew has calm the pain immensely. Now I only take it once a day or if needed. The benefits are unbelievable for me.

After what I believed was a bout of vertigo, I went to my doctor. I had fainted in the bathroom a few weeks earlier and I wasn't sure why. My doctor diagnosed me with migraines -- the type that is affected by hormone levels (in my case, menstrual cycles). She prescribed Advil and Excedrin but advised me to find alternative methods also. My mother and I searched online, and eventually found Feverfew. She bought a small 1 oz bag of Feverfew capsules from Leaves and Roots for me to try and, to my surprise, it was the only medication that actually worked! The other medicines only dulled the pain, and just held off the migraine headache until the pills wore off. Feverfew not only helps me during migraines, but prevents it, too. I've been using it for a little over a month and it has helped tremendously~ Read More Read Less

This treatment helps the ups and downs of my pain. If I do get the pain it is reduced. I have found that pain meds such as hydrocodone do not often "hit the spot" other then calming me. I believe that is why feverfew is so good, it somehow deals with nerve pain. And like the article says, make sure you buy a reputable product and check the level of parthenium.

After my migraines got worse and even aspirin which worked before stopped being effective the feverfew was a dream. My hormones were out of whack perimenopausal. I also got breast cancer (estrogen positive) right after peri and it is related. Migraines stopped but I wonder if feverfew would actually HELP prevent femara resistence. Anyone know?

I can truly say, I have a new life. I can't say I have it back, since I never was without migraines since the age of 11 and I'm 34 now. So this has been a life changing experience. After suffering excruciating migraines for 23 years, the attacks started to become more and more frequent and untreatable even though I kept away from overuse of painkillers to avoid worsening the problem. Still they peaked to at least 3, 3 days attacks a month and many more days with 'normal' migraines. The rest of the days you're just recuperating. I decided there was no other way but to try the preventative medicines, but I was very reluctant because of all the side effects I read about concerning the chemical ones. In my research I came across the herb Feverfew and decided to give it one last try. That month I started was my last 3 day episode. Since 3 months now, I'm almost completely migraine free. Maybe 1 or 2 minor ones a month from almost daily. Besides, they've greatly reduced in pain and severity and respond to normal painkillers (no triptans) for the first time in my life. I know this won't happen for everyone, but you could always try. I'm so grateful and happy to have a changed life after all the pain and misery. Everyone who's been there, knows. I have my miracle. My triggers are processed food and fast food, 2nd hand smoke, caffeine, and weather changes. I originally got migraines after taking Lunesta over 7 years ago, but they never went away. I have tried every medicine on the market and none of them helped. In the past year and a half, I have tried various brands of Feverfew. Almost every brand has a different dosage and recommended frequency of taking it. The best combination I have found is 380mg, 3 times a day, by Nature's Way. I have seen a dramatic improvement in the frequency and intensity of my migraines, with no side effects. This is the best solution I have found and it's absolutely amazing. My migraines are managable for the first time in over 7 years.Read More Read Less

I have only been using Feverfew for a few days now. I have already notice drastic improvements in my headaches. They went from untolerable to tolerable in a days time. The headache is not gone, but it is drastically improved. I am excited to see what this herbal supplement will do for my quality of life. I have suffered from migraine headaches for 6-7 years now and they are terrible. I am tired of taking medications that affect my train of thought just so it can dull the pain in my head. I hate telling people who ask how I am doing that I don't feel good, or I have a headache everyday..... I am looking forward to seeing how this does, and I will post back on here in a few months to give an update!!Read More Read Less

I had post-tramatic migraines & suffered for 5yrs.Doctors could not control, Migraines lasted 3days before going to emeregency.I took feverfew for 1-1/2yrs. & am migraine free for the past 13-15yrs.I also put my adult Son on feverfew for severe allergies about 8mos. ago and this is the first summer he enjoyed with very minimal problems with his allergies. He can sleep without blowing his nose the majority of the night. I highly recommend Feverfew I can't remember the brand I took but it was 380mg. and my Son is taking Puritan's Pride feverfew 380mg.Read More Read Less

It's truly cut back on the frequency of migraine attacks and the intensity and duration of attacks when I do get them. I believe taking the daily feverfew supplement has made a positive impact in my quality of life due to having less migraines. Previously, I had them every week at least, now typically only a few times a month. That's a drastic improvement.

I actually started taking feverfew to lessen headaches and migraines. I haven't had a migraine while on it (7 weeks), though I have had regular headaches. But what is amazing, and why I will keep taking it is that I no longer have high blood pressure, my allergies are much, much better and my arthritis pain is lessened greatly. I cannot believe how this herb has helped me. I certainly didn't expect these results - but I am very happy with them.

I have suffered from migranes since I was 9 yrs old and now 27. I have had cat scans, blood drawn and many types of perscriptions. None which have worked. I am now using Feverfew and have seen a great improvement in not getting migraines. I recommend anyone who has chronic migraines to give this a try. You will feel the difference and no longer be disabled by the pain of migraines.
