When you look at ultrasound pictures, do you have trouble telling the baby's head from the foot? Rebecca Westbrook did with her first child.
I think it was just bone..uh the shape and the skull, teeth, things like that, eye sockets.
Now 4-d ultrasound scanning is giving Rebecca and her husband a better look at their daughter-to-be... a three-dimensional video of the baby four weeks before her birth.
See the hand in front of the face, the mouth.Yup.
The fourth d stands for real time, meaning you obtain the images as you scan, as you move your transducer the 4-d image, the 3-d image is live in front of you. And as the fetus moves, you can see those movements real time.
Compare a traditional ultrasound on the left with the same image in 4-d on the right. These close-up shots help doctors detect problems earlier and eliminate guesswork.
Look at the anatomy from different angles similar to what is done in M-R-I and CT scan imaging. For the first time, that really allows us to get access and information that we never had before or was difficult to obtain before.
And here's another hand in a fist.
Parents can see well enough to count tiny ears, eyes, fingers and toes, even see the expression on the baby's face.
I was really surprised they could get that. I was, that was really something amazing to me.
Oh, wow.
A window on the womb with a really good view. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
