Behavioral counseling for TM disorders

Because temporomandibular (TM) disorders are known to have a strong connection to stress, cognitive-behavioral therapy can be a helpful part of treatment. Cognitive-behavioral counseling helps you understand and solve problems in life that may be causing stress. Some people find the cognitive-behavioral approach especially helpful for changing negative attitudes and coping skills.

Long-lasting (chronic) pain is hard to cope with, especially if several treatments have not been successful. Many people with chronic pain develop depression. If you have symptoms of depression, seek treatment. Counseling, an antidepressant medication, or a combination of the two can help you feel better and cope more effectively.
