I began using Lysine 5 years ago due to a bad outbreak of cold sores. I had suffered cold sores all my life several times a year but this was one of my worst outbreaks and I had tried everything else to heal them, my pharmacist recommended L-Lysine ointment and told me others had said that taking the supplement reduced the outbreaks so I decided to try that too. The next day the ointment had cut...

I have suffered from cold sores every year of my life, usually in December...until I found Lysine. Up till this year I have gone three straight years free from cold sores. I slacked this year and didn't take my daily dose of 1000mg and I broke out twice in one month! This is truly a preventative medicine that works like a charm...when you remember to use it. At the onset, I take 2000mg in a day then 1000mg each following day until the sore dries out. I combine this with topical remedies as well and sometimes I can stop the sore dead in it's tracks and keep it barely noticeable.Read More Read Less

A friend of mine told me about taking Lysine several years ago for my herpes and it has changed my life. I used to get outbreaks 4-5 times a year. Now I get 1 every couple of years. They are less sever and shorter in duration as well. I take 1000 mg every morning and another 1000mg in the afternoon everyday to prevent outbreaks. When I do get an outbreak I take an additional 1000mg per day.

I train for Ironman triathlons and my immune system gets worked over, so cold sore are always popping up. Then I started taking Lysine daily and haven't had one in approximately one year.

When I first got one, they would pop up every other week! What a nightmare. I take 1000mg pretty much every day. It's easy to find in the drug store, relatively cheap, and I haven't had a real cold sore in almost two years. Whenever redness stars to pop up, I take 2000mg instead, and it's gone in a day.

I have suffered very miserably with cold sores on my lips and face since being kissed as a baby on the forehead by an infected person. Tried everything (eg, gentian violet smeared all over one cheek while a small child isn't an adorable look) but nothing worked. 3/4 times a year social engagements, relationships etc had to be cancelled for 2 to 3 weeks because of an outbreak. Until acyclovir, which however causes lasting redness, nothing worked, until I found lysine. Taking one 500mg lysine tablet a day every day has reduced the number of outbreaks to about one a year, and reduces the extent and invasiveness of outbreaks. Applying powdered lysine (the content of capsules) dry, direct to the cold sore, clears it up, although not as quickly as acyclovir, and is gentler on the surrounding skin. I now find that I only get cold sores if I'm very run down or if I eat a lot of arginine-rich foods (nuts, chocolate) and at the same time neglect to take my daily 500mg lysine capsule. Can't understand why this isn't more widely known. Read More Read Less

I have had this condition for about 9 years, and discovered the lysine pills about 5 years ago. They work great! I take 500 mg every morning for suppresion. Since the pills are so large i always take them with a thicker liquid like a smoothie or V8 juice, and that works awesome. The only time i ever feel an outbreak come on, is when i have forgotten to take the lysine. I highly reccomend this! Its such a lifesaver.

After almost 20 years of using Valtrex to reduce the outbreak length I recently tried Lycine and was shocked and how much better it worked than the prescription alternative. Not only was the outbreak nice and short but the flu like symptoms were 90% reduced and I had the energy to carry on my normal life.

The pills are kind of large. (1000 mg.) Is there a soft gel L-Lysine.. and what's the name of the cream?? Is the cream more effective on herpes or is the pills.?

When I feel a colds sore coming on I take 1,000mg twice a day and it never develops into a sore. After about 2 days it is completely gone. Amazing cold sore treatment. Take it when you first feel a tingling and it works

As someone with frequent outbreaks of HSV2, I find that Lysine doesn't reduce my outbreaks, and it certainly doesn't help it to go away once an outbreak happens.

I take this for depression and it has made a marked difference. I take between 4 and 5 thousand milligrams a day, sometimes more. I cry a lot more when I dont take it. Doesnt seem plausible, but I have noticed a correlation over a number of years, so I believe its valid.
