Tips for Eating Out With Hyperkalemia

Plan Ahead
Scout out the menu online before you go so you know your choices. That way, you’ll have some time to choose the dish that best fits your dietary needs – or you’ll know if this restaurant isn’t the best choice.

Pick Up the Phone
If you’re unsure about a restaurant’s offerings, give them a call. You can ask the staff how they prepare certain meals, whether they can make substitutions, and if they have suggestions based on your limitations.

Start on Low
Once you know you’re meeting friends for a meal out, prep for success by keeping an extra tight rein on your potassium levels in the early part of the day. That way, you have a little leeway at mealtime.

Know Your Subs
Stay informed about what’s high and low in potassium, or search it on your mobile device from the table. Ask for substitutions when possible to lower the levels.

Sauce on the Side, Please
If you have any hesitation about what’s in a sauce, ask them not to mix it in. Do it yourself instead so you have control over how much you get.

Keep It Simple
It’s easier to stay low-potassium at home because you know exactly what’s going in your dishes. When you’re out, choose menu items with the fewest ingredients, such as baked fish or chicken and a simple side, so there’s less doubt about what exactly you’re eating.

Share Your Supper
Get a dish and split it with your dining companions. You’ll get something you enjoy and eat less of it, so your potassium levels stay in check.

Make a Drink Plan
Decide how much fluid you plan to take in and whether you’ll drink it before, during, or after your meal. Refuse refills or flip your glass over or push it away from your plate. Squeeze lemon in your water to help quench thirst.

Make an Appetizer a Meal
Choose an appetizer for your main course for a smaller portion size.

Choose a Made-to-Order Joint
Dining at a restaurant where you can tailor your meal will give you the most choices and freedom while eating out.
