Intrauterine Growth Restriction Directory

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a pregnancy complication in which the baby grows very slowly while in the womb (uterus). Specifically, it means the developing baby's weight is lower than that of most other babies at the same stage of pregnancy. Intrauterine growth restriction may occur from an infection or if the baby does not get enough oxygen or nutrients. Pregnant women who have diabetes or who smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs, or eat poorly have a higher risk for this complication. Intrauterine growth restriction can lead to serious health problems in the child at birth.
