After reading all the reviews I was scared to take this. So, I made sure to drink a full glass of water before I took it and right before bed. I took it with lunch and with dinner, in the middle of the meal. I never experienced any symptoms and took two a day for one week.

DO NOT take this if you are allergic to sulfa drugs. I only took for two days and I had a severe allergic reaction to this medicine. My eyes started turning black/purple....looked like I had not slept in weeks. Chills so bad my teeth chattered and my entire body was shaking. Excruciating body aches all over my body, as if my muscles were being ripped out of my body and I started having a horrible...

Constantly want to throw up. Chills and fever. When I do manage to eat something, I have the runs immediately. Shortness of breath. Exhausted. Lost 3 pounds in 3 days.

My mother in law was taking nitrofurontoin for a bladder infection. She ended up with severe chills, dizzyness, severe nausea, and a few others. I would definitely not recommend this medicine, especially to those with a history of sugar disorders like diabetes.

Oh the nausea is terrible! The indigestion, abdominal discomfort, and lightheadedness/dizziness will make me refuse to take this again.

I kept getting "repeat" UTI's .. put on antibiotics the infection would clear up, but would return within 1 week after finishing antibiotics. I was put on Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin)permanently by my "specialist", which is approx. 20 years ago, and have had no reoccurrences of UTI's since starting this medication.

I am 82 years of age and this drug made me very ill. I as so sick, weak, dizzy, leg pain and no appetite. I had to stop taking it. Then I was given Cipro and it has terrible side effects too. I have been ill for over a week so I will try natural over the counter remedies from now on. What ever happened to sulfa? It used to work for UI infections and now we have designer drugs that have horrible side effects.I hope I will recover from these side effects.

After several years of being on this medication per my urologist, I developed interstitial pneumonia. I had to go to Mayo Clinic to get to the bottom of this. Neither my lung specialist or rheumatologist could find a reason for the pneumonia, and damaage was done to my lungs.

I am pregnant and had to take this medicine. I already have a PAT which is a very rapid heart rate and misfiring of the heart. I was short of breath often, and had gotten leg pains that grew worse with each passing day. I took myself off the medication and let my doctor know I will not be taking it anymore. She agreed this was my last day. Now I can barely walk and have to have my leg massaged constantly and apply heat because the muscles are do tight. Thank goodness its only one leg. I developed back pains as well and extreme nausea. Read More Read Less

UTI came back less than a week later and continued the medication but was ineffective this time and switched to Bactrin which after 4 days is still not working the way I wish. Now getting headaches but afraid to stop and get worst. Seeing Urologist tomorrow.

Most reviews were from elderly patients and caregivers, so were not helpful to a middle aged healthy person like me since the Instructions for Use for this drug state side effects are more pronounced and more likely to occur in elderly patients. As a healthy 35 year old with a UTI, I experienced a quick recovery with minimal side effects.

I had a routine phyical w/urine test and was told I had a UTI - I had no discomfort just frequent normal trips to the restroom. I was given 14 tablets of this drug at 100mg and told to take 2 per day after 2 or 3 days I got BAD diareeha so grabbed the anit-diareeha pills and check that problem fast. This Web-Md web site says NOT to do that but I didn't call my doctor and I am taking 1 pill a day which I can tolerat so hope when I get rechecked the UTI will be gone. I also had chills/fever and felt very tired but thought that was the UTI or menopause maybe. Hope this stuff works.Read More Read Less

This medicine should be used with caution in the elderly. After 3 pills, my father was sick to his stomach, had major difficulty breathing, kept him up all night. He stopped taking it, was afraid to take anymore. Bad stuff!!! How ever did this antibiotic get approved?
