Bipolar - I took this med for one year with no blood testing. I started experiencing mixed symptoms and asked my doctor if my dosage might need to be adjusted. She then decided that my oxcarbazepine level should be checked along with my sodium. I was not even in the therapeutic range, so my dosage was increased. My sodium was only slightly low. A few weeks later my levels were checked again. ...

I have depression, Anxiety, and very bad mood swings. Ive been taking Trileptal for my mood swings for over a year now, and it has made such dramatic improvement on my life. Not only did it stabilize my mood, but also worked to treat my anxiety as well. The first week or so taking it, I was a bit dizzy and groggy but after that those symptoms went away, and in weeks my mood was stable and I was on to continuing a better life style.

I take this for mood regulation/depression and let me say it is an absolute blessing after my first couple rounds of trying other antidepressants and psychiatrists, thank goodness for this last one. I take 600mg in the morning and 1200mg at night. After years of being a restless/light sleeper I can take the evening dose and in a half hour be sound asleep with no grogginess/drugged out feeling when I wake up a good 6-8 hours later, simply amazing.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder. I was prescribed Trileptal as a mood stabilizer to help slow down the constant racing/obsessive thoughts. However, after some adjustments I found the right dose (150 mg) in letting me slow down and focus. I gave satisfaction four stars because you can only change the dose by 75 mg and I feel if I could take between 150 and 225 I would be in an optimal range. Also, I did have some side effects when I was around 225-300 mg. I had constant ringing in one of my ears and I felt my mind slowed down so much I could barely hold a thought. Overall, a good medicine to help slow down racing thoughts if you're diagnosed with Bipolar 2 Disorder.Read More Read Less

I began having nocturnal seizures after sinus surgery about a year and a half ago, the ER doctor and neurologist put me on Keppra 500mg twice a day. Keppra was horrible, I have bad headaches, I felt like I was in a fog the entire time I took Keppra, which was a year and a half and I was constantly angry ALL THE TIME..Keppra nearly ruined my life, I had to change neurologist to get the help I needed and get my medication changed..Now I am on Trileptal 300mg twice a day, this medication has helped me be me again, I am no longer angry and my head is clear and I feel normal again. I helped me on day 1 of taking it. I am happy with my decision to change neurologist to get the help I needed even though Keppra helped control my seizures, the side effects were worst then having the seizures.Read More Read Less

I'm giving this drug a five star rating because it has saved my life. I was not properly diagnosed for years with depression and was on Celexa and Ativan. I never could get off of the Ativan. The anxiety attacks were actual hell and caused me to be unable to function. I actually have Potsdam with bipolar. Now I can have conversation and desire to live. I see better days.

This medication has a really bad side-effect of affecting sodium levels. Twice in the five year history of taking it, I wound up in the hospital with simple partial seizures that would not stop. The second time was so severe they almost had to put me in the critical care ward. While I think this drug did a good job of stopping the seizures, it isn't worth the risk. Even with consistent monitoring of sodium levels, this still happened.

My son is 14 years old and has ADHD. He has had ADHD since he was 5. He started taking Buspar 2 years ago and after a year it stop working. He started taking 300mg Trileptal 2x a day for the past year and his mood swing was greatly improved.

The first week on this (300mg, 2X/day) was wonderful - I finally had some relief from years of bipolar I disorder. After that, the effects gradually went away until I went back to my previous mixed state. We upped the dosage to 600mg, 2X/day and I was in a good place for 3-4 days, then it started wearing off again. Eventually I became very depressed at this dosage. My psychiatrist worked with me and we cut it back to 300mg, 2X/day again and the depression lifted within 18 hours. On our third try, we are doing 300mg in the morning, 600 mg in the evening. This medicine does well at helping me sleep, but my emotions are very fragile. Where I was living in a mixed or manic state almost continually, with some very short depressive episodes (2-5 days max), for 6 years previous, I am now flipping from manic to mixed to depressed within a few hours 1 - 2X per week on this medicine. It has definitely helped with my irritability and mania overall, I have become very unpredictable and erratic. As further indication of the problems that this medicine has caused, my wife has suggested that I try going off it and resuming my prior mixed/manic state. Her reasoning was that I was at least predictable previously whereas I am not anymore. I plan to explore other treatment options with my psychiatrist starting this week, but will keep this medicine as a backup should I not be able to find another suitable replacement.Read More Read Less

On this for BiPolar. Not too sure on it. My moods are "brittle", not very reliable for it's use as a mood stabilizer so far. Unusual tension near top of head, like wearing a band way too tight. Sometimes goes from tension to actual headache. Sleep unreliable, sometimes can't stay awake, other times cannot sleep. Walking coordination sometimes slips, my own feet tangle with each other. Dreams no longer remembered or if I'm dreaming at all. This has never happened before. No stomach problems from it or other ease of taking issues. Not impressed but I'm running out of mood stabilizer options due to how long I've been diagnosed and how often what works becomes no longer acceptable.Read More Read Less

My 15 yr. old had been on this medication for years and it has managed his seizures to the point of not even having seizures for at least 7 or 8 years until now. His neurologist thinks that puberty my have brought on seizures and increased his dosage.

Had rash, bumps all over. Started out as dry, flakey skin that no lotion would work, turned to red then purple rash. Shortness of breath too. Most likely Stevens-Johnson Syndrome but no Doctor would look into that specifically. Didn't have rash before and haven't had it since.

I have been on so many meds at the same time, and the trileptal made me emotionless, frustrated, and worst of all, confused. Just because you get a manic episode from your ADHD meds doesn't mean you're bipolar. Luckily, I got off of it, and I felt like my old self. Being irritable once in a while is ok too.

I was prescribed this medication for Bipolar II. I have been through trials of over 12 different meds at this point, and I wish I could say Trileptal worked, but the side effects are terrible. I feel like it stole my personality. I am normally a high-energy (not necessarily mania) person. This med made me so very sleepy that I could not keep my eyes open during the day. I wanted to sleep all day, and I coulnd't concentrate long enough to read an article. Also, made my vision blurry, acne, weight gain. Terrible experience. Read More Read Less

I am a 14-year-old with Bipolar ll and ADHD, and I find Trileptal to work very well with Abilify. I still have my highs and lows while on this drug, so I tend to blame the Trileptal when I'm feeling depressed and sick. That's not the case. I have experienced no cognitive difficulties being on a tiny dosage of 300 mg a day, but once I accidentally took 1200 mg one morning, twice the amount I used to take. I felt really depressed from taking that much, so I had to go to the emergency room. If you take this drug, keep taking it unless you feel horrible. If you do feel horrible, tell your doctor and taper the dose down, or you might get a seizure. It also is difficult to concentrate the first few weeks you take it. Read More Read Less
