I have a history of diverticulosis. Twice now when food got trapped in the intestine pockets, I have been prescribed Lactulose. When I asked how this worked so quickly to eliminate my pain, the doctor explained this medication acts as a magnet to enter the pockets and then eliminates the rotting food particles trapped in there. It creates moisture and sends it on its way thru the intestines where...

MY DOCTOR HAS PRESCRIBED THIS FOR APPROXIMATELY 8 YEARS! I HAD TO INCREASE AND INCREASE THE DOSAGE FOR IT TO WORK, SO NOW I HAVE TO TAKE THE STRONGER LINZESS WITH IT. IT DOES GIVE ONE GAS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT CONTINUED USE OF A LAXATIVE WAS BAD FOR US? WHY DOES MY DR. KEEP ME ON IT FOR SO LONG? BECAUSE I'D NEVER GO WITHOUT IT (I HAVE A TWISTED COLON) AND NOW I THINK I HAVE A BLOCKAGE…….BELLY...

Finally realized after 1 and 1/2 months that Lactulose was causing my nausea and vomiting every 3-4 days.

My husband is in end stages of hepatic cirrhosis. Medicals bills and medications have become very expensive. Sometimes we have to wait severals days before being able to fill a perscription. But, of the current eight medication perscribed, Lactulose is the one we WILL NOT do without. It is the single most important med in his treatment. Without lactulose his ammonia levels become life threatening within 36 hours. Dosage 90 ml 3X day. Tastes bad, causes nausea, causes diarrhea, sustains life.

I had a colostomy 5 years ago and a take down or reverseal 3 months after. I have been seriously constipated and bloated ever since. It has been awful and I have tried many many different remedies but no good. The maylax always worked but I constantly went from constipation to diaharea (can't spell). This stuff works very well. My stomach has gone down tremendously and I am regular. Give it a chance it just takes a while. BTW I am mildly lactouse intolerant but it doesn't tear me up.

I don't know what all the bad reviews on the taste and effectiveness are about. I don't mind the taste at all (try Milk of Mag. sometime) and it seems to be pretty effective in keeping me regular. I take a TBS every morning. My only complaint is that I seem to have a lot of flatulence which I think is from the Lactulose.

Bowel issues are just one of many problems I deal with since my TBI from a auto accident. My psychiatrist put me on Lactulose,1 Tbl at bedtime. My gastro dr told me to take Align along with the Lactulose. He said the Align has good bacteria in it to counteract the bad bacteria in the Lactulose.I also take the Align at bedtime. I have not had any problems with either med since I've been following this routine.

Taking for about a month. Dr told me to take 2 tbls every hour until it kicks in, and it does kick in, but after about the 6th hour of that dosage, pain is unbelievable. Doing that 2 times a week now, but it is better than not going at all, but just barely. Now, I am having really bad leg cramps. Guessing it is lowering my potassium?

this medicine tastes terrible, but if you drink it fast or mix it with juice it is better. I've been on Lactulose for about 3 years now,30ml three times daily, i have found that if I forget to take it my memory get a little foggy, then I forget to take it again and my memory gets real bad, I forget everything. And it takes a few days of taking it again to get back to normal. Given the consequences I will take this medicine every day no matter what the taste. My Dr. has advised me to take Metamucil to counter the diarrhea, it's supposed to help. Read More Read Less

I have stage IV Colon Cancer with blockage in the colon which cause food blockage with severe pain. The Lactulose seemed to exaberate the problem causing severe constipation, bloating, and liquid brownish discharge. After reading this site I am discontinuing this medication I think I am suffering these symptoms from the medication rather than the disease I have but it is difficult to determine.

I've been taking Lactulose on and off (mostly off!) for 3 years for hepatic encephalopathy and high ammonia. Started at 90cc 3x a day. You will never leave the bathroom much less your house at this dosage. Because I have to WORK, this was not a long term option. Now I've just started taking 30 cc 3x day and I procrastinated taking it because I knew what was going to happen. So, it did happen but this time I also have INTENSE cramping, bloating and this wicked headache after only ONE dose! I read someone else's post where he advised this was a LACTOSE product. I'm lactose intolerant. Guess if I had proper brain functin I might have caught that! lol I don't think I was ever able to stay on this (or enulose) long enough to know if it worked or not. But I can tell you it's not convenient for anyone who has a life outside of their home! Read More Read Less

I Was directedm to take this medication (2 tablespoons)3 times a day. It worked good at first, then it worked okay, sometimes (2tablespoons) 3 times a day was to much, so I would cut back. The it wouldn't work the way I was told it would. I am still working with dosage to try and get it to where it is right for me.

Do not take Lactulose is you are lactose-intolerant. This is a synthetic and more powerful derivative. I was given it in a hospital after a heart attack, and the amount of pain and gas was absolutely astounding. It lasted for hours and after a week, my intestines are still not quite right. It also made my constipation worse. After calling the pharmacist into the ICU, we looked at the chemical makeup, and he confirmed my suspicions that it was based on Lactose, varying by only one molecule (which makes it more powerful - I am a chemist by trade btw). He was also lactose intolerant and so we discussed how it was like downing a giant milkshake in less tha a minute without any warning. Lactaid taken after the fact helped a little with the pain but not the bulk of the gas production. So, watch out if you're lactose intolerant and avoid this product like the plague.Read More Read Less

As many others I had tried about everything available with many miserable days. Now I take a tablespoon in my morning coffee and stay regular. Great solution for a long time IBS problem.
