Divalproex is the third bipolar med I've tried, and it's the first that doesn't feel like a complete waste of money. I do get some slight tremors after my morning dose, but that's the only side effect I've experienced (my liver function's actually improved since I switched from lithium). There's a definite difference in my mood, too -- I'm far less irritable and edgy on divalproex than I felt on l...

Prescribed to me for for Bipolar disorder and have to say this medication caused more harm than good. Have had more mood swings, bad hand tremors, bad hair loss, gained weight, my right eye twitches, I have irregular hear rhythms now. Needless to say more of a mess than I was before. And my doctor says the benefit to me is greater than the risk of side effects of the medication yup great. That is why I stopped taking it.

Replaced Depakote ER with Divalproex Sodium ER and both work the same- very well. Divalproex costs a lot less also. Take only at night as it can help you sleep.

This is the second medication my doctor prescribed to stop a migraine I had had for over 6 months that never stopped. This medicine did make it stop, HOWEVER, my hair has come out severely.I bet I have lost half the hair on my head!! I am just now figuring out the reason for my hair loss has got to be this drug since it is a side effect. I am fearful to stop the drug since it does stop the headache.Hoping my doctor can find another drug to work as well and that my hair will grow back.

When I started on this over 2 years ago, it helped more than the others I had tried, even though I was still getting 20+ headaches/month. The hair loss is finally getting to such a point that we are going to try to decrease & possibly discontinue it since the Botox treatments are going so well. Botox has cut my migraines in half. :)

I have been on this medication for 3 weeks now and my hands and feet and ankles swell and after taking I sweat for hours like crazy. Plus I am now having problems with my jaw it hurts and on the left right under the tongue is a large sore that looks like a bone but the whole jaw line hurts. The headaches are less but it has not helped the pain from the ladder hitting me on the head four months ago and has not helped my fibermyalga.

Took to treat bipolar disorder, kind of ended up keeping me at a "middle ground" all day. I couldn't get too sad (which was good), but I also couldn't get happy. I wouldn't say "zombie" feeling, but just "coasting" through life. The initial side effects were pretty severe irritability and increased appetite, these went away after about a week but every time my mg's got increased I had to go through these side effects again. Quit taking it after about 7 months.

Have taken Depakote for several months in addition to Topomax to aid in migraine prevention. Recently had significant vision loss in both eyes after taking it on a regular basis.

I'm 32 and was recently diagnosed with bi-polar. After years of "mood swings" I sought help. Was in therapy for a year and then found a psychiatrist that prescribed 500mg of depakote er. My mood is stabilized and I find my life being fuller and more productive. I do miss the creative bursts of the manic phase, but sure don't miss the random sex, excessive illicit druge use e.g. cocaine, and drinking myself to sleep. I hope this helps any of you going through what I've gone through. Been on it for almost a year and no side effects.Read More Read Less
