After years of being treated unsuccessfully for depression, my family doctor diagnosed me with ADD. I have only been on this medication for 1 month, but I want to know - is this what life is like for other people? Can life truly be this effortless? Gone are the constant extraneous thoughts. I can listen to people all the way through a whole sentence, and feel much more connected to the world....

I am a 45 year old female, recently diagnosed with ADHD, which I knew I had my whole life. I have often felt paralyzed and overwhelmed with so many things to do and can't stay on one task. I am opening a photography studio soon and am fearing failure due to my lack of organization. Strattera is the third med I have tried. Although it has calmed we way down, I feel I am too tired and not ambito...

It has really helped with my focus and hyperactivity, but the side effect that I have experienced recentlyis bad. I have trouble getting and erection and when I finally get one it doesn't want to go away and it can become painful. This started about 7 months into taking it and I have now been on it for 9 months. I may get off of the medicine if this continues.

Our doctor prescribed Strattera as an alternative drug to stimulants b/c of our 10 yr olds lack of appetite, and felt that Concerta was not really working well. We just hit week 4 and dosage of 25mg - his personality changed overnight - moodiness, defiance but what shocked us most and totally out of character was that he wanted to hurt himself and even others - he attempted to choke a fellow camper who did nothing to him, dangerously hurt his brother. Took him off of it ASAP and with there was a way to flush it out of his system now. A true nightmare for any child or parent.Read More Read Less

I got ADHD Dx at age 44. Ramped up medication from 25mg to 50mg and now at 75mg. Worked for the first 8-12 months (on for 2 yrs. now). Not feeling that my focus/attention, irritability or activity is under control. I am worse off the medicine. While on Strattera I have had terrible headaches, nausea, trouble urinating, dark urine and dry mouth. Moderately happy with the results. Very expensive medication to take. Looking for an alternative drug treatment. Agree with many other reviewers that Strattera seems to have very different affect on people.Read More Read Less

I personally didn't feel any of the benefits of this drug. The only thing it did was make my (diagnosed) OCD worse, and made me dangerously drowsy. I was dozing off at work and even while driving I would feel extremely drowsy, and felt that I may need to pull over and take a nap. Nights and weekends I felt useless because I just wanted to sleep. I did not like this med.

When I took this drug my focus definitely improved but I felt as though my brains had been put into a straightjacket. I got off it after about 6 months. Probably more effective for me than others such as Addersll and Wellbutrin, but side effects were tough, and I don't have that many brains to beat them into a pulp every day.

I took Starttera and the lowest dosage to begin with. My strength was increased twice and it worked wonders for me. I was able to concentrate and work through my day like a pro. Two side effects I absolutely did not want to put up with. One, lack of appetite...I lost twenty pounds in no time. Second, upon completing urinating, I felt as if I needed to co the going. When I would do so, urine did not discharge but semen did. It was really strange. It was as if I had a full discharge without the feeling of an orgasm. This of course caused other sexual side effects. Impotency, worst of all. I wish the later would not be a problem for me as I could come to handle the weight loss and lack of appetites. Any other men here have this happen to them. I'd like to hear your testimony. My doctor shared it happens in a small percentage of males but I'd like to know how small. Read More Read Less

11 year old son, diagnosed with ADHD at 7 years old. He was switched to Strattera last year and, thankfully, is being switched to something else. He often complains of not being able to focus and it's as if he isn't taking anything at all. No appetite, unable to sleep and is constantly feeling dizzy. This wasn't the medication for him.

My son started this medication about 3 weeks ago. He did fine the first couple weeks. Was moody the first week, the second week he complained a couple times of severe stomach pain. And he just started on the last tier of the dosage and he was not feeling well at all. One day he did not want to eat was complaining of not feeling well. The next day he said his heart hurt. The third day of the upper dosage he complained again of his heart hurting (stinging) and that his heart skips a beat. Called Dr. and am taking him off this medication completely. Other than this scare he did say he noticed he was able to focus more in school and that his teacher noticed. Read More Read Less

Went to Dr on JAN 2. She gave me the 30 sample pack and stated she will have her office refer my to be evaluated by a psychologist to be tested (why I have to go to a psychologist to be tested for ADD is beyond me). Started this medication slowly 18mg, then 25mg, then 40mg and now 60mg. The side effects were immediate. Piercing headache, overly sensitive to light, fatigue and severe drowsiness. While it did help with focusing it was no where near enough for me to continue on the meds (I had to nap everyday at 3, it was awful). So now, I'm going on three weeks, no call back from my dr office and no call from the physiologist office. I don't get it. I go to the dr for help, get a sample pack of this stuff and three weeks later, no follow through with anything! Also, straterra made me overly irritable! Totally turned me off from meds (which is a shame cause it did help me to focus, but just couldn't get past the side effects)!Read More Read Less

My mother-in-law exclaimed in 2000 that I had issues with listening and following conversations. She was correct :). I never realized that these were issues until my early thirties when I was tested. My psychiatric specialist was stunned that I had obtained 3 college degrees without being medicated for A.D.D. Irrespective, after testing, the handwriting was on the wall (albeit illegible which is symptomatic of someone with ADD). I began taking Strattera, in combination with Wellbutrin, in 2004. The combination has worked well for me with minimal side effects for the past 10 years. The sole basis for prescribing both was for ADD treatment versus depression, which Wellbutrin is sometimes prescribed. However, if you have a loved one who has experienced behavioral concerns with another A.D.D. med, or has strong A.D.D. symptoms, I recommend that you speak with your health care professional about prescribing both Strattera and Wellbutrin in tandem.Read More Read Less

I have been on Straterra for 4 months now, I started struggling with anxiety once I started college in my late 30's, after two years of trying several anti-anxiety/anti-depressants I decided to totally quit meds and deal with it all on my own. After an unexpected move at the beginning of my senior year, my anxiety, stress and ADD symptoms started to intensify and decided I'd give meds one more chance with a new doctor, she recommended Straterra, previous to this time I had not been diagnosed with ADD. I am now 4 months into using this and just graduated with my B.S., Straterra is the best option for me, I saw significant improvement in my focus and work/study ability, I completed my most challenging semester, 18 credits(including a 4 credit graduate class) and an incomplete and obtained straight A's raising my overall GPA to a 3.5. My accomplishments since being on Straterra have given me the confidence to pursue my Masters degree, cause I know now it won't be such a hardship and struggle that my first three years of college were before I was on this med. I am very happy with taking this drug, despite the side effects of nausea, weight loss, dry mouth and constipation. Of course it may not be for everyone, but is likely worth a try. I switched from the stimulant Vyvanse to Strattera. The beginning nausea was horrible, like having morning sickness every night (when I was told to take due to severe nausea side effects). I stuck with it and the nausea disappeared. Strattera worked well for a few months. Unlike Vyvanse, I wasn't anxious, having mini-panic attacks, and could drink a cup of coffee without freaking out. Unfortunately, I gained a lot of weight due to weird sugar cravings.....I absolutely craved sugar!! Never have before. The worst, the drug just stopped working for me and the nausea returned. I quit taking altogether but was a mess so have switched to Concerta. These drugs are so different for everyone.....trial and error and will take a few years to get it right I suppose.Read More Read Less

My 15 yr old daughter was taking 80mg for about 6 wks. We determined it was not working. Went to the pharmacy to get higher dose prescription filled and learned it was going to cost over $200 per month. We will never know if higher dose would have worked cause cannot afford it!

This is a comment to warn of possible over-dosage. A slight background is necessary to understand that this is a risk from IMPROPER use, and not Proper use. Straterra seems to be beneficial for a number of people and I don't want to dissuade proper use. The short version is I was 'Diagnosed' with ADD in highschool in an utterly subjective manner (made worse by falsehood I told my parents which added to the diagnosis). So I was put on Straterra against my will. I took it for 6 months, then stopped (without anyone noticing), and a year later when I was caught, I basically had to take a pill (100mg) to save face. Going to bed an hour later, I felt sick, and sweated a lot. Then my upper calf on my left leg cramped. Hard. For 15 seconds it was the more excruciating pain I've been in. When I stretched it out, as you do in scuba diving, it felt like I might tear the muscle off the bone, and obviously the muscle was pulled and hurt for several days after. I write this now because that was 5 years ago, and last night the same muscle did the same thing, for maybe the dozenth time since then - though somewhat less painful. Giant, Hard cramps don't happen often, but about half the time I can make that muscle cramp with only slight pain on-demand. Additionally, all of my muscles seem to be more prone to cramping - but since I wasn't paying attention before, I have no way to say for sure. There has been some degree of permanent damage to my muscle, or the neurological signals that cause it to cramp. This is from taking a single 100mg pill without buildup. This is a warning, because I do not see it listed on the "overdose" section. Severe Muscle Cramps. Some permanent form of damage has been done from a single pill, and the point should be emphasized to NEVER take a regular dose of Straterra without going through the buildup process. This injury is 5 years old - so I have little reason to think it won't persist for the rest of my life. Read More Read Less

the doctor gave me this started to take it I took it for 8 months and in those 8 months I kept on getting light headed and dizzie I went to the doctor they said drink more water so for a month I drank more water like 6-11 24 oz bottles a day but I still had the light headed and dizzieness so my thereapist looked up more info on it and it said the medicine straterra can cause heart attacks and shortness of breath so she refered me to get a heart test monitor for 24hr and for that whole 24hrs I had no physical activity or anything heavy I sat down most of that time well I returned the monitor back they checked it and said straterra has gotten used to my heart and that I also had 5 irregular heart beats and that if I wouldn't have stopped taking straterra at the time I did it could have been a matter of no time it was possible for me to have a heart attackRead More Read Less

This medication has changed my life for the positive! Instead of procrastination, I get on and am able to focus consistently. In spite of the side effects ie racing heart, heavy periods, early morning waking, the overall effects are good enough to keep me taking it.
